BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai para swimmer Ekkaphan Songwichean has become a symbol of perseverance and determination, rising from humble beginnings in Ayutthaya province to represent Thailand at the 13th ASEAN Para Games 2025 in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Born without arms, Ekkaphan learned early to rely on his feet for daily tasks, education, and independence. He studied with his peers and completed lower secondary education at Srisangwan School, which facilitates students with disabilities. Throughout his school years, he pursued opportunity over sympathy, building confidence and resilience through discipline and self-reliance.
In competition, Ekkaphan overcomes physical limitations through rigorous training, mental strength, and focus. At the 13th ASEAN Para Games, he won five gold medals and one silver, including gold in the 50-meter backstroke, S5 class, and set a new national record for Thailand.
Despite competing in venues with modest crowds, Ekkaphan’s achievements resonated nationwide and reflected the spirit of Thai athletes who demonstrate dignity and commitment. His success proves the value of perseverance over physical advantage and the potential of athletes with disabilities when given equal opportunity and support.
Ekkaphan’s journey stands as a living testament to the power of determination and resilience, inspiring people nationwide. (NNT)
