BANGKOK, Thailand – A woman believed to be suffering from mental illness was detained after allegedly attacking tourists and members of the public with a knife on the sidewalk in Sukhumvit Soi 5, near the Nana area, Sunday, Jan 18.
Two foreign nationals were injured in the incident. Witnesses said the woman attempted to assault several people, prompting good Samaritans and motorcycle taxi riders to intervene and restrain her before notifying police.
Police later confirmed that the woman had previously been involved in a knife-related disturbance on a public bus in the Thong Lor area. Witnesses also reported that she had been seen frequenting the area for some time before her behavior escalated.
Lumphini Police Station officers charged her with physical assault and sent her to Somdet Chaopraya Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Authorities said if a mental illness is confirmed, she will receive treatment before further legal proceedings. (TNA)
