AYUTTHAYA, Thailand – The Ministry of Culture has launched the night-time cultural tourism program, “Ayutthaya Nawa: International Port City under the Royal Benevolence of Siriyalai,” inviting visitors to experience the World Heritage city as it comes alive after sunset.
Minister of Culture Sabeeda Thaised presided over the opening ceremony at Wat Chaiwatthanaram in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. Provincial officials, senior representatives from cultural agencies, and other relevant organizations attended the event.
Sabeeda stated that Ayutthaya Historical Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 and is one of Thailand’s most visited cultural destinations, attracting over three million visitors annually and generating significant tourism revenue. To enhance the visitor experience, the Ministry of Culture, through the Fine Arts Department, introduced this nighttime program to highlight illuminated historic sites and honour the royal benevolence of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother.
The main venue is Wat Chaiwatthanaram, just across from the Siriyalai Royal Residence. Visitors can also explore vibrant activities at Wat Phra Ram, Chantharakasem National Museum, and Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. The program runs from December 26, 2025, to January 4, 2026, and continues every Friday to Sunday from January 9 to February 1, 2026, between 4:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Guests can immerse themselves in a spectacle of decorative lights, be captivated by traditional performances like khon and classical Thai drama, enjoy lively folk dances, and listen to both Thai and international music. The festivities also feature an international-style ancient market and special New Year’s Eve celebrations on December 31, 2025, with a cross-year prayer ceremony and cultural exhibitions.
The Minister stated that night-time heritage tourism encourages longer visitor stays, supports local businesses, and aligns with the policy of transforming cultural capital into economic value. (NNT)
