Officials warn motorists to urgently check and replace Takata airbags at authorized service centres nationwide, as hundreds of thousands of vehicles in Thailand remain at risk from defective airbag inflators linked to serious injuries and fatalities.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Land Transport urgently advises owners of over 500,000 vehicles with Takata airbags to visit authorized service centres nationwide for free inspection and airbag replacement.

Director-General of the Department of Land Transport Sorapong Paitoonphong expressed concern for motorists’ safety after reports of fatalities caused by metal fragments from malfunctioning Takata airbags. Investigations have found abnormal airbag deployment in several vehicle models in Thailand and abroad.

The Department of Land Transport, in cooperation with the Thai Automotive Industry Association and over 14 automobile manufacturers, has launched a nationwide recall to inspect and replace defective airbags and prevent serious injuries or fatalities. Authorities estimate that about 600,000 vehicles need airbag replacement, but only 100,000 have been serviced, leaving over 500,000 vehicles uninspected.

The Department strongly urges vehicle owners to check if their cars are affected and arrange for replacement to ensure safety. Owners can verify their status at www.checkairbag.com. Owners may also review notices on registration receipts from the Department of Land Transport or check inspection results at authorized vehicle inspection centres.

The Department of Land Transport and automobile manufacturers will also send official notification letters directly to registered owners to ensure timely inspection and repair. (NNT)
