Authorities monitor rising water levels in Songkhla as heavy to very heavy rainfall prompts urgent warnings for floods, landslides, and hazardous conditions through December 25.

SONGKHLA, Thailand – Songkhla Governor Ratthasart Chidchoo has issued an extremely urgent notice to agencies across the province, urging the public to remain alert for hazards associated with heavy to very heavy rainfall from now until December 25.

The Songkhla Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Center has been tracking rainfall and water levels using data from the Songkhla Irrigation Project and alerts from Water Resources Office No. 8. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation also issued a public warning through the mobile phone cell broadcast system on Dec. 18.

Assessments indicate that widespread heavy rainfall has already affected many parts of the province, with rain-bearing systems expected to continue. Authorities warned of increased risks of flooding and landslides in low-lying areas, along canals and waterways, and in foothill and sloped terrain during the warning period.

District disaster prevention centers and related agencies have been instructed to issue timely public alerts about potential hazards, including flash floods, forest runoff, river overflow, landslides, and strong winds. Boat operators have been advised to navigate with caution, and small vessels are urged to avoid going offshore during this period.

Provincial officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any incidents promptly to the Songkhla Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Center, which remains on standby around the clock to respond to weather-related emergencies. (NNT)
