Workers prepare to travel during the New Year holiday as the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare encourages employers to allow additional leave, promoting rest, family time, and safer journeys during the festive period.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare has issued a notice urging employers and business establishments to allow employees additional leave during the New Year holiday period.

Officials said the measure would allow workers more time to rest, travel to their hometowns, and participate in family activities. Extended leave is expected to help ease work-related fatigue, support morale, and improve well-being, while also encouraging domestic travel and spending during the holiday period.

According to Director-General Saroj Komkai, employers were asked to consider designating Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, as an additional holiday, enabling a continuous break from Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025, through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026.

The department also called on employers in the land transport sector to closely manage drivers’ working hours. Authorities said driving schedules must remain within legal limits to reduce the risk of fatigue-related accidents on peak travel days.

Employers and employees were urged to prioritize road safety during holiday travel. The department is also advising travelers to avoid drinking and driving and to plan their trips accordingly to ensure safe journeys during the New Year period. (NNT)
