BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed that Prime Minister Thailand has not accepted any ceasefire proposal from Malaysia and issued a warning to Thai citizens in Cambodia to consider leaving if their travel or stay is not essential.
Spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura, Director-General of the Department of Information, outlined four key points regarding the Thai–Cambodian border situation. First, the MFA has sent two formal protest letters to Cambodia, demanding an end to actions threatening Thailand’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and calling for responsibility for the ongoing incidents while halting provocative behavior.
Second, the Foreign Minister has briefed diplomats and representatives of international organizations in Thailand and will continue to provide regular updates on the situation. Third, Thailand’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York sent letters to the UN Secretary-General and the UN Security Council, detailing Cambodia’s violations, highlighting the emergency evacuation of over 400,000 residents, and explaining Thailand’s necessary defensive measures to protect its sovereignty and citizens. Thailand also urged the international community to pressure Cambodia to halt provocations and restore the possibility of peaceful negotiations.
Fourth, Thai embassies and consulates are proactively clarifying Thailand’s position to host countries to ensure the world receives accurate, timely, and comprehensive information. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has also conducted interviews with major international media outlets, including CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, Reuters, and The New York Times, to reinforce Thailand’s perspective and counter misinformation from Cambodia.
Addressing recent reports that Thailand had accepted a Malaysian ceasefire proposal on December 9, the MFA stressed that these reports are false and have no basis in fact.
The MFA additionally warned the estimated 600–1,200 Thai citizens residing in Cambodia to consider leaving if their stay is not essential, due to ongoing uncertainty at the border. Thai embassies in Phnom Penh and consulates in Siem Reap are in regular contact with citizens, providing updates and assistance.
