BMA officials monitor water levels along the Chao Phraya River as residents in flood-prone riverside neighborhoods are urged to stay alert during this week’s high-tide surge.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has issued a warning for elevated sea levels affecting riverside areas through December 12. District offices have deployed personnel to monitor conditions and assist residents, particularly in 11 riverbank communities located outside the flood barrier system, which require heightened vigilance.

According to the Department of Drainage and Sewerage, 11 communities are situated outside the primary flood-protection embankments along the Chao Phraya River, Khlong Bangkok Noi, and Khlong Maha Sawat. These areas, covering six districts—Dusit, Phra Nakhon, Bang Kho Laem, Yannawa, Bangkok Noi, and Khlong San—comprise approximately 320 households with a population of around 1,070 people. Due to their lower elevation, they are at higher risk of direct impacts when river levels rise.

The BMA has advised residents to closely monitor the water level of the Chao Phraya River during high-tide periods caused by sea-level surges from now until 12 December, between approximately 8 A.M. and 2 P.M., based on data from the Hydrographic Department of the Royal Thai Navy. Households located outside the flood barriers—those situated beyond the riverbank embankment—may experience direct impacts from fluctuations in river levels. The public is urged to remain alert and follow updates throughout the period of elevated tides. (NNT)
