Thailand’s Central Investigation Bureau seized land, vehicles, and other assets allegedly misappropriated from temple donations, following the arrests of the former abbot and a spiritual influencer, while authorities warn remaining stolen funds must be returned immediately.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) announced the seizure of over 10 billion baht in assets recovered from a scandal at Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu, following the arrests of the temple’s former abbot and a spiritual influencer in August.

The operation has so far recovered over 7,200 rai (2,840 acres) of land and nearly 60 vehicles, which were allegedly acquired through the misappropriation of temple donations.

Authorities noted an additional 200 million baht was dispersed through loans and other means.

The CIB issued a final warning for all remaining stolen assets to be returned immediately and vowed decisive legal action. The evidence will be given to the temple to pursue civil suits to recover the remaining funds.

Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu achieved fame and attracted large donations by serving as a hospice for HIV/AIDS patients abandoned by their families. (TNA)
