BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin has confirmed the government is actively working to resolve the case of two Thai elephants, Plai Pratu Pha and Plai Srinarong, currently in Sri Lanka. In a message posted to his official Facebook page, he said preparations are underway for his visit to Sri Lanka, pending coordination with that country’s government.
Growing concern in Thailand over the condition of the elephants has led to increased calls for their return. Suchart said the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation is coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to handle the matter through appropriate legal and diplomatic channels.
The Deputy Premier urged the public to avoid criticism or blame and instead adopt a respectful tone, recognizing cultural differences in animal care. He stressed that the goal is not to accuse, but to seek the elephants’ safe return through mutual understanding and dialogue.
Suchart acknowledged support from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who has endorsed the ongoing cooperation between relevant ministries. A recent joint meeting on November 6 reportedly saw progress, and discussions with Sri Lankan authorities are continuing.
He assured the public that the government is moving forward with the matter and that his upcoming visit will include direct talks with Sri Lankan officials, calling for understanding and patience as the process unfolds. (NNT)
