Thais will enjoy a 5-day long weekend from Dec 31, 2025 to Jan 4, 2026, after the Cabinet added Jan 2, 2026 as a special holiday to boost travel and tourism during the festive season.

PATTAYA, Thailand – The Thai Cabinet has approved an additional public holiday for the New Year period, giving the country a continuous five-day break from December 31, 2025, to January 4, 2026. The move aims to allow people more time to rest, travel, and stimulate domestic tourism during the high season.

According to the resolution, Friday, January 2, 2026, has been designated as an extra special holiday, extending the usual New Year celebrations. The extra day off will apply to government agencies, while private organizations may follow at their discretion.

December 2025–January 2026 Holidays:
Friday, December 5, 2025: King Bhumibol Adulyadej Memorial Day / National Day / Father’s Day
Wednesday, December 10, 2025: Constitution Day
Wednesday, December 31, 2025: New Year’s Eve
Thursday, January 1, 2026: New Year’s Day
Friday, January 2, 2026: Additional Special Holiday (Cabinet-approved)

Ideal Time to Plan a Getaway
With this decision, Thailand will have two long holiday stretches in December.
Early December: December 5–10 (6 days if taking two vacation days on December 8–9).
New Year Period: December 31, 2025 – January 4, 2026 (5 days total).

The extended break is expected to boost the country’s tourism and hospitality industries as travelers plan family reunions, beach holidays, and festive celebrations across the nation.

Travelers are advised to plan ahead, as heavy traffic is expected during the New Year holidays—particularly at major tourist destinations such as Pattaya, Hua Hin, and Chiang Mai. With the five-day long weekend encouraging millions to hit the road for family trips and getaways, highways leading to beach resorts and northern cities are likely to experience congestion. Authorities are urging motorists to check road conditions, avoid peak travel times, and allow extra time for their journeys to ensure a safe and stress-free holiday.
