YASOTHON, Thailand – Minister of Culture Sabeeda Thaised yesterday (Oct 22) presided over the opening of the 2025 Toomka Lantern Festival, joining Yasothon Governor Chanchai Sornsriwichai, officials from the Ministry of Culture, and large crowds of residents, to celebrate one of Isan’s most distinctive cultural events.

The festival, now in its eighth year since being revived in 2017, preserves a traditional ritual unique to Ban Thung Tae village. Villagers carve Toomka (Nux Vomica) fruit shells, place candles inside, and offer them at temples on the night of the end of Buddhist Lent. The glowing lanterns honor Buddhist teachings while showcasing the intricate craftsmanship and creative spirit of the local community.

Minister Sabeeda said the Ministry of Culture is advancing Thai heritage as a driver of the creative economy, helping local communities generate income through cultural tourism. The Toomka Lantern Festival embodies this approach by blending long-standing traditions with artistic expression, drawing both Thai and international visitors to experience the beauty of Isan culture.

This year’s celebration, running from October 22 to 26, features more than 100 illuminated Toomka Fire Trees, dance performances, folk shows, and workshops where visitors can learn carving techniques from local artisans. The event also includes a cultural marketplace, Thai folk music competitions, and the “Miss Toomka” pageant, creating a lively and colorful atmosphere. (NNT)
