BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow addressed the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 27, underscoring Thailand’s readiness to play a constructive role in strengthening multilateralism at a time of heightened global tensions. He described the UN’s 80th year as a crossroads moment, stressing that the institution must adapt to current challenges while remaining a force for peace, development, and human rights.

In his speech, Sihasak pointed to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza as stark reminders of the devastating human toll when peace breaks down. He also emphasized the importance of women’s full participation in peacekeeping and humanitarian work. Thailand’s contributions, he said, include peacekeeping missions abroad, nearly complete clearance of landmines at home, and expanded opportunities for displaced individuals from Myanmar to work outside temporary shelters.

The Minister also addressed regional challenges, voicing concern about the crisis in Myanmar while turning to Thailand’s relationship with Cambodia. He acknowledged differences along the border but said Thailand remains firmly committed to resolving them through peaceful dialogue. Stressing that both countries are part of the same ASEAN family, he noted that stability and prosperity are shared interests that should guide the way forward. He added that Thailand will continue to protect its sovereignty while seeking constructive engagement with Cambodia to build trust and cooperation.

Sihasak highlighted Thailand’s broader role in human rights, sustainable development, and health. As a member of the Human Rights Council and Chair of the General Assembly’s Third Committee, he stated that Thailand will continue to advance rights protections, promote gender equality, and expand access to healthcare. He pointed to Thailand’s Universal Health Coverage system and contributions to global pandemic preparedness as examples of practical measures that safeguard lives and strengthen communities.

Sihasak called for reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council, to make the organization more transparent, representative, and responsive to global needs. He urged stronger regionalism, saying ASEAN serves as Thailand’s foundation for cooperation, and highlighted the importance of empowering young people in shaping the future. Concluding, Sihasak said Thailand will stand with nations seeking peace and progress, pressing for action that ensures the UN’s next eighty years surpass its first. (NNT)
