PATTAYA, Thailand – Dicey Reilly’s Bar & Restaurant hosted another memorable Wine Tasting on Friday, 29 August, this time pitting the bold and diverse wines of South Africa against the vibrant offerings of Chile in an event aptly named Wine Wars. With a lively atmosphere, live music, and an expertly curated buffet, guests were treated to an evening of exploration across hemispheres.

The tasting began with the Lions Cape Sparkling Brut from South Africa, a lively and crisp sparkling wine with subtle citrus notes and a fine mousse that set a refreshing tone for the evening. It was delicate yet precise, a perfect aperitif to awaken the palate.

Next, the Great Five Collection Chardonnay, also from South Africa, showcased a balance of buttery texture and vibrant acidity. Its soft tropical fruit character, combined with subtle oak nuances, made it versatile for food pairing, particularly with lighter dishes from the buffet.

From Chile, the Gran Valiente Superior Sauvignon Blanc brought a contrasting style, bright and aromatic with pronounced citrus and green apple notes. Its lively acidity cut through richer dishes effortlessly, revealing the hallmark vibrancy of Chilean whites. The comparison between the South African Chardonnay and the Chilean Sauvignon Blanc highlighted the diversity in white wine expression: one smooth and textured, the other zesty and direct.

The red wines offered equally compelling narratives. South Africa’s Cabernet Sauvignon delivered depth and structure, with dark berry aromas, soft tannins, and a subtle earthy undertone—classic elements reflecting the country’s renowned terroirs. The Chilean Gran Valiente Cabernet Sauvignon followed with a full-bodied profile, showcasing ripe plum, cassis, and hints of spice, illustrating the warmth and richness of Chilean reds. The contrast between the two Cabernets was fascinating: South Africa offered elegance and restraint, while Chile emphasized ripe intensity and approachable fruit-forward charm.

Complementing the wines was a remarkable buffet, crafted by Executive Chef Pongpisit Un, featuring Roast Beef, Lamb, Sea bass, Pasta, Pizza, a Cheese Board, and decadent chocolate desserts. The food was thoughtfully matched to the wines, enhancing both flavour profiles and the overall tasting experience.

Special thanks goes to General Manager Matthew Fryar and his wife for their generous invitation, as well as to Andrea Molinari, Director of Food & Beverage, and Tony, who ensured flawless service.
