BANGKOK, Thailand – On August 18th, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa announced that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Thai Red Cross Society, hosted the 11th “Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Lecture on International Humanitarian Law” at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the event, having attended every lecture since the first one in 2003. This year, Ms. Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, or ICRC, delivered the keynote address on “Upholding Humanity in Contemporary Warfare”.
Minister Maris stated that during a bilateral discussion, he thanked the ICRC President for sharing her perspectives on current humanitarian challenges and for the ICRC’s global missions. He emphasized the importance of respecting international human rights and humanitarian law, particularly in times of conflict, and affirmed that Thailand will continue to work closely with the ICRC.
The Foreign Minister also noted that modern conflicts are not confined to the battlefield but also involve the weaponization of information through online disinformation and hostile narratives that devalue humanity and justify violence. He affirmed that Thailand is committed to upholding and protecting humanitarian principles and the rule of law, and is ready to contribute to global initiatives on international humanitarian law.
