BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army has clarified the 2nd Army Area’s recent request for public assistance in supplying concertina wire to reinforce security along the Thai–Cambodian border. Army Spokesperson Maj Gen Winthai Suwaree said the request was prompted by urgent operational needs despite the Government and Army having sufficient budget for such materials. The wire, with a diameter of 100 centimeters, helps strengthen defensive positions in key border areas.
Maj Gen Winthai explained that the normal legal procurement process takes at least a month, even when expedited. Skipping procedures could expose procurement officers to legal consequences for violating regulations. With immediate security requirements in Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, and Buriram provinces, he said there was no time to wait for the process to conclude. These provinces cover a long stretch of the frontier, making swift deployment of defensive barriers critical.
Maj Gen Winthai stressed that the request was based solely on timing and not on budget shortages. Both the Government and the Army, he said, are determined to safeguard Thailand’s sovereignty and ensure border areas are secured against potential threats.
