BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s domestic tourism surged over the Mother’s Day long weekend from August 9 to 12, with more than 3.16 million trips generating 13.75 billion baht nationwide. Deputy Government Spokesperson Sasikarn Watthanachan reported that the average hotel occupancy rate was 66%, with Thai nationals accounting for 41% of travelers. The Central Region recorded the highest travel volume with 898,000 trips, followed by the Northeast with 609,600 and the East with 600,500.
Bangkok led in revenue at 3.41 billion baht, followed by the Southern Region with 2.79 billion and the Eastern Region with 2.62 billion. The most visited major destinations were Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Chonburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Rayong. Popular secondary cities included Lopburi, Udon Thani, Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi, and Loei.
Hotel occupancy peaked in Prachuap Khiri Khan at 88%, with Thai tourists making up 80% of guests. Samut Songkhram followed at 82%, while Surat Thani and Songkhla each recorded 77%, and Phetchaburi reached 76%. These provinces combined coastal attractions, cultural sites, and local celebrations that drew strong visitor numbers.
According to Sasikarn, most travelers chose short-distance trips within their regions or to nearby provinces. Many opted for day trips without overnight stays, engaging in family-oriented activities such as temple visits, merit-making, dining, and celebrations on August 12. The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects domestic travel to remain strong despite household budget pressures, while international tourism is also projected to grow.
Sasikarn thanked tourism operators, government agencies, and the public for contributing to the holiday’s lively atmosphere. She reaffirmed the government’s plans to continue promoting tourism to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and ensure that economic benefits are shared across all regions. (NNT)
