Thailand-Cambodia border talks kick off in Malaysia for immediate ceasefire

Acting PM Phumtham and Cambodian PM Hun Manet meet in Putrajaya under Malaysian and ASEAN facilitation, with U.S. and Chinese diplomats supporting efforts to ease border tensions.

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia – Malaysian official media report that a special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia to negotiate an immediate ceasefire and end hostilities along the contested border has begun in Putrajaya, July 28.

Bernama news agency reported that the special meeting was organized by Malaysia and its Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently chairs ASEAN, aiming to ease rising tensions and restore stability in the border area.



The report states that Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai arrived at the official residence of the Malaysian Prime Minister in Putrajaya, the country’s administrative center, at 2:51 p.m. local time (one hour ahead of Thailand). Shortly after, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet arrived and was welcomed by Anwar Ibrahim.

Also attending as facilitators were the U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, and the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing. (TNA)
