BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, acting as caretaker Prime Minister, addressed recent tensions at Ta Muen Thom temple in Surin Province, stating the Thai government is deeply dissatisfied with Cambodia’s actions. He urged both the public and the military to remain calm and avoid escalation in response to provocations.
Phumtham acknowledged that the incident involved deliberate provocation and emphasized the need for Thai personnel to exercise maximum restraint. He said Cambodia was likely using these tactics to incite clashes and gain international leverage. Thai forces have been instructed to avoid any confrontation and not allow the situation to escalate into violence. Partial closures and preventive measures have been implemented at the ancient temple site, which remains under the control of Thailand’s 2nd Army Region.
When asked about the possibility of repeated incidents—especially following reports of a former Thai ranger punching a Cambodian soldier—Phumtham stressed the importance of avoiding hatred and confrontation, especially for the safety of local residents and soldiers stationed along the border.
“The government is already very displeased with Cambodia. In terms of diplomatic measures, the Foreign Ministry has taken steps including considering the recall of the ambassador—these are the strongest possible responses within diplomatic norms,” Phumtham said. “We must not fall into their game, nor should we take Hun Sen’s words seriously. He is merely the father of the current Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Manet, and lacks the authority to make decisions.”
He further noted that Hun Sen, now President of the Senate, holds no formal role in international negotiations, adding that other nations and international forums have paid little attention to Cambodia’s actions. “We speak officially with Hun Manet. Hun Sen may have influence and wish to resolve the issue, but ultimately he holds no decision-making power unless he exerts personal influence over the prime minister.”
“I ask all Thai people to stay calm. We are managing this situation to the best of our ability to protect Thailand’s interests and sovereignty. This government will not allow any compromise on sovereignty under the guise of diplomacy or personal relations,” Phumtham concluded. (TNA)
