Thailand’s iconic royal-style traditional dress, registered nationally in 2023, is set for UNESCO world heritage consideration next year, boosting cultural preservation and soft power initiatives.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai Royal Traditional Dress (Chut Thai Phra Ratchaniyom) is officially heading to UNESCO for world heritage consideration next year. The Ministry of Culture confirmed that “Thai Traditional Dress: Knowledge, Craftsmanship, and Practices of Thai National Costume” will be reviewed by UNESCO’s heritage committee in 2026.

The move supports Thailand’s Soft Power initiative and cultural preservation efforts. The royal-style Thai dress was first registered nationally in 2023 before receiving Cabinet approval for international submission in March 2024.

If successful, Thailand’s traditional dress would join UNESCO’s prestigious list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizing the generations of skilled artisans who have preserved this cultural treasure. (PRD)
