Prime Minister Paetongtarn leads crisis meeting at Thai Khu Fah Building to assess national response strategies as conflict escalates in the Middle East.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra chaired a high-level meeting to address the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel and its potential impact on Thailand. Held in the Thai Khu Fah Building, the meeting discussed measures to review the country’s energy readiness and prepare evacuation plans for Thai nationals in the Middle East. The Prime Minister called senior officials from relevant ministries to coordinate a national response should the situation worsen.

Attendees included Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Eksiri Pintaruchi, and Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Prommin Lertsuridej. The Prime Minister was briefed that Thailand’s oil reserves could sustain the country for about two months. Officials also reviewed alternative sources of energy supply, and the Ministry of Energy was instructed to prepare a comprehensive contingency plan in the event of a prolonged disruption.

Concerns have grown over the closure of airspace and transport systems in and around Iran and Israel, especially near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil exports. Officials warned that continued instability could have a direct impact on oil prices and shipping routes. Given the limited air travel in the region, land-based evacuation options were also examined during the meeting.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that approximately 300 Thai nationals are currently in Iran, primarily individuals with family ties in Tehran, along with a small number of workers. In Israel, over 40,000 Thai citizens reside. About 100 have expressed interest in returning home, while the remainder have been relocated to safer areas. The government confirmed readiness to assist any Thai nationals seeking evacuation.

Field teams from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have begun surveying land routes across border areas in both countries to connect with available flights, as airspace closures remain in effect. Authorities were instructed to closely monitor the situation and remain ready to take action if conditions deteriorate. (NNT)
