BANGKOK, Thailand – A shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 struck Phrao district in Chiang Mai province at 14:07 on June 2, with tremors felt across at least five provinces. The quake occurred just 1 kilometer below the surface and was linked to movement along the Mae Tha Fault System, which runs north to south through the region. The fault movement was identified as a normal fault, indicating vertical displacement due to crustal extension.
The earthquake was widely felt in several parts of Chiang Mai, including Phrao, Fang, Chiang Dao, Mae Taeng, San Sai, Doi Saket, Saraphi, Mae Wang, Mae Ai, and the capital district. Reports of shaking also came from Pai district in Mae Hong Son, Ko Kha in Lampang, and Dok Khamtai in Phayao.
Authorities have confirmed that there have been no reports of damage or injuries so far. Given the shallow depth of the quake, further monitoring is underway to track possible aftershocks, though no major structural impact is currently expected.
The Earthquake Observation Division, in coordination with the Department of Mineral Resources and other seismic monitoring agencies, is continuing to observe seismic activity in the affected region.
Earthquakes in northern Thailand are not uncommon due to the area’s complex fault system. Officials advise residents to remain alert and follow updates from official channels in case of additional seismic events. (NNT)
