CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Heavy overnight rainfall has triggered flash floods across Chiang Mai, inundating homes in several communities within the municipal area and forcing the closure of three waterfalls due to dangerous currents.
The downpour caused runoff from Doi Suthep to overwhelm drainage systems and the Khlong Khu Wai canal, leading to widespread flooding in areas like Sri Ping Mueang, Fa Mai, and Kat Kom. Water levels reached 30-50 centimeters, making roads impassable for small vehicles and disrupting daily life for residents and businesses, including students traveling to school. Chiang Mai municipal authorities are now working to urgently pump out the floodwaters.
In response to the hazardous conditions, the head of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park ordered the immediate closure of Mae Sa, Tat Mok, and Mok Fa waterfalls, citing the strong currents as a danger to visitors. (TNA)
