Umbrellas and waterproof gear are recommended this week as rainfall increases across Thailand.

PATTAYA, Thailand – With heavy rain expected across parts of Thailand this week, tourists are being advised to prepare for wet conditions — especially in Bangkok, Pattaya, and other popular destinations.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, thunderstorms will affect up to 60% of Bangkok and its surrounding areas, with some locations experiencing heavy downpours. The forecast warns of increased rainfall from May 23–27, caused by a strengthening southwest monsoon and a trough of low pressure moving across northern and southern Thailand.

This weather system may result in flash floods and runoff in certain areas, particularly low-lying regions and those near hillsides or waterways. As a precaution, locals and tourists alike are urged to avoid traveling through flood-prone zones during storms and to stay updated on local advisories.

For visitors staying in coastal cities like Pattaya, it’s not all bad news. While rainfall is expected, the sea conditions in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are forecast to be relatively calm, with wave heights of around 1 meter — though areas with thunderstorms may see waves over 2 meters high. Boat operators are urged to exercise caution.

For now, tourists are strongly encouraged to keep umbrellas and light rain gear on hand but don’t necessarily need to carry them everywhere — especially if their hotel is nearby. As one expat wryly put it, “There’s no shame in leaving your umbrella at the hotel — unless you’re planning to explore beyond the shopping malls.”

Those planning outdoor activities should check daily forecasts and consider rescheduling morning or afternoon trips when rainfall is most likely. Meanwhile, agricultural communities are also being urged to protect crops and livestock from possible damage.
