BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has confirmed that Thailand’s tax negotiations with the United States remain within the agreed 90-day timeframe, with detailed discussions still underway. Speaking to reporters on May 6 following the weekly Cabinet meeting at Government House, the Prime Minister addressed public concerns about transparency and reassured the public regarding the process.

The talks are being led by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, with Thai authorities engaged in extensive preparations. While some elements can be publicly discussed, others remain under review and are not yet ready for release. Paetongtarn said the approach is intended to safeguard national interests while the process continues to develop.

Concerns had been raised over the level of public access to information, with speculation that aspects of the agreement were being arranged behind closed doors. In response, the Prime Minister reiterated that nothing is being concealed, but that timing plays a critical role in ensuring productive discussions. Releasing information prematurely, she said, could risk undermining progress.

She also noted that she had recently spoken with the U.S. team to clarify remaining areas where Thai agencies need to take further steps. These are being handled as necessary. While the substance of the negotiations is already well established, the Thai government continues to monitor developments in the United States that may affect the outcome.

As discussions proceed, Thai officials are expected to adapt their strategy in line with both domestic priorities and international changes. The government’s objective remains to secure an outcome that supports long-term economic stability and fairness. (NNT)
