PATTAYA, Thailand – Narongwit Chodchoi, Director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, announced the joyful arrival of four baby capybaras—the world’s largest rodents—born on March 24. The proud parents, five-year-old “Kati” and “Xiang,” are part of the zoo’s growing capybara family.
Although the genders of the babies have yet to be confirmed, they are healthy and thriving under their mother’s care. The zoo affectionately named the newborns “Captain,” “Benz,” “Tod,” and “Nick” in honor of the zoo director and their caretakers.
The zoo now houses a total of 14 capybaras and invites the public to visit and enjoy their adorable antics daily at the capybara enclosure.
In celebration of the Songkran holiday from April 12–16, Khao Kheow Open Zoo will also host special cultural activities including traditional Thai New Year rituals, musical performances, a retro-style market called “Green Zoo Market,” a mascot parade, and games with exciting prizes. Visitors can also participate in the “Khao Kheow Night Zoo” to observe nocturnal animal behavior in a unique nighttime setting.
Capybaras, native to parts of South America, are known for their social nature and love of water. They can weigh up to 70 kilograms and stand around 45 centimeters tall. With their webbed feet and natural swimming abilities, they often spend hours soaking in water, even during feeding and mating.
