Chiang Mai seniors brave the cold to withdraw 10,000 baht from the digital wallet scheme, with some missing out due to incomplete registration.

CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Seniors braved the cold to withdraw 10,000 baht from the government’s digital wallet scheme on Monday morning (Jan 27). However, some missed out on the benefit due to not registering, with hopes pinned on Phase 2 for a chance to receive the funds.

At the ATM outside the Government Savings Bank in Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai, elderly residents arrived with bank books and ATM cards to check their accounts, many smiling as they confirmed the deposit. Among them was Grandma Sommai, 72, who prepared early at 5 AM to check her balance. Seeing the 10,000 baht deposit, she beamed with joy, ready to spend the funds on essential household items.

Similarly, Grandma Pimporn, 63, a red songthaew driver, withdrew her funds to refuel her vehicle and use it as working capital for her livelihood, transporting students and tourists.

However, some seniors missed out on the benefits because they did not register via the government application. These individuals will need to wait for Phase 3 of the scheme to apply and receive their funds.

Nationwide Enthusiasm for the Digital Wallet Program

In Songkhla Province, seniors who had already confirmed their eligibility also lined up to withdraw their 10,000 baht. One recipient, a plumber, shared that the funds would be used to invest in his business and support daily expenses.

In Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat), the scene was especially busy, with long queues at ATMs as seniors eagerly waited to withdraw their funds. Some faced delays because they had not linked their bank accounts to the PromptPay system, prompting bank staff to assist them in completing the registration for future payouts.
