Public Health Department volunteers attended a training seminar at city hall last week to learn methods to prevent insect borne diseases, such as dengue fever and malaria, from spreading in the region.

Wuttisak Rermkijakarn, Pattaya deputy mayor opens the training seminar at city hall.

Wuttisak Rermkijakarn, Pattaya deputy mayor responsible for the health, hygiene and environment in Pattaya, presided over the seminar opening at city hall.

Senior officials from the provincial health department lectured community representatives and homeowners on issues of prevention as well as methods for treatment through community based programs in order to stem the spread of disease.

The deputy mayor said, “It is important for everyone to learn practical methods of disease prevention that can be used effectively on a day to day basis for the benefit of the community.”

‘Romeo And Juliet’ in Pattaya

Only dates in Thailand on the TNT World Tour

The professional touring theatre group TNT will give two eagerly awaited performances of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ at the Regent’s School on the 9th and 10th March at 7.30pm in the Globe Theatre.

The production features Martin Christopher as Romeo who achieved huge acclaim as Hamlet in last year’s TNT world tour. As well as many appearances in professional stage productions in Europe, he manages to find time to tour in his rock band in the UK.

TNT Theatre’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, on a world tour, plays two dates in Thailand at the Regent’s School.

Suzanne Marston, who plays Juliet, is a graduate of Oxford University and trained at the world famous Jaques Leqoq Institute in Paris. As well as touring with TNT as Hermia in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ she has appeared at the Chichester Festival Theatre and has written a play of her own.

Darrell Brockis, who plays Mercutio, trained at the prestigious Webber Douglas Academy in London and graduated from St Andrew’s University in Scotland. His other professional appearances include Cassio in Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ and Jim O’Connor in ‘The Glass Menagerie’ by Tennessee Williams.

Gareth Radcliffe, who is Tybalt in this production, trained at the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama and currently lives in Paris; his most recent role has been that of Bill Sikes in the TNT touring version of ‘Oliver Twist’.

Glyn Connup who, amongst countless professional theatre appearances, appeared in the film ‘Nil by Mouth’, directed by Gary Oldam, plays Friar Laurence.

Of special note is the live musical score played by the performers themselves on violin, trumpet, percussion and guitar in addition to five-part harmony singing. Composer Thomas Johnson is well known for his theatre work, including the current London West End success, ‘When the Whales Came’. In order to bring the story closer to our modern world, the play is set in the flamboyant ‘La Dolce Vita’ period of the 1950’s in Italy.

TNT American Drama Group has developed an international reputation for presenting dynamic, exciting and direct productions of Shakespeare’s major works. Live music, powerful choreography and a simple performance style allow a modern audience to experience a Shakespeare’s great love story as an Elizabethan audience might have done. The play is re-discovered as a story not of urban street kids but ‘two houses both alike in dignity’. This is a tragedy of clan war where the death of two lovers brings the warring factions to their senses.

This unique event also focuses on the link between Shakespeare’s original Globe Theatre in London, where the play was originally 400 years ago, and our very own Globe here in Pattaya. This will be the first performance by a professional company in the newly built Globe Theatre of the Regent’s School.

The enthusiasm of the reviews gained world wide for this production speak for themselves: ‘Highly effective and charismatic theatre’ says the New York Village Voice, whilst the Japan Times calls them ‘extraordinary’ and The Scotsman newspaper praises them for being ‘wonderfully unpredictable and astonishingly inventive’. The Frankfurter Neue Presse, Germany described this ‘Romeo and Juliet’ as a ‘beautiful and impressive production that reaches the heart of the play’. Judging by these plaudits, this is a production not to be missed!

The Pattaya Mail and Thai Garden Resort, Naklua sponsor this part of the TNT American Theatre Group, Europe world tour. Tickets cost 500 baht for adults and 400 baht for students and can be purchased from the Thai Garden Resort, office hours 9am-2pm and 4-8pm (Tel: 038 370614-8 ext 6666) or from the Secondary School, Library at the Regent’s School (Tel: 099 328464). Book now for this great opportunity to see a highly polished professional production right here in Pattaya.

EDITORIAL: Increased prices at the fuel pump

By Suchada Tupchai

The increases just keep coming. Diesel fuel just went up 60 satang per litre just as queues at the pump were getting long before benzene went up another 40 satang per litre.

The price rise, they claim, is due to the New York listing of crude at 50 US dollars per barrel as usage around the globe increases. The trickle down now affects us at home here in Thailand as we prepare for these never before seen diesel and benzene prices at the pumps.

Despite officials citing that the fuel increases may not affect the cost of goods and services, the damage has begun and businesses are already increasing their prices in small increments. In reality, the effects are minimal, with an increase of 2 satang per kilometre per passenger on buses, operators will almost definitely alter their prices accordingly. The changes not only affect the transport industry, the effects continue on down to the cost of electricity.

EGAT should announce that as a result of fuel increase they would not raise the cost of electricity supply. However, that remains to be seen, they seem to be instead reducing the production process to balance the cost. If this doesn’t happen the general public will be submitted to costs across the board.

Many residents are already finding it difficult to cope with the increase in fuel prices and they look to the government for help. It is the little people who will feel the greatest pinch. Fresh in the minds of many is the election promises made during the campaign. Can the government live up to their promises after people put their trust in them for the second term?

Whatever, the case may be, the good thing is that the problem affects the entire country, and with that in mind, officialdom will need to bow to pressure from the masses if they can’t resolve the issue. But also it provides an opportunity for the majority to become more energy conscious. Changes have already come into effect, as everyone tightens their belts to make the most out of what they have by making what energy they do use reap the most benefit.
