Hundreds turn up at birthday bash for Bruce Hoppe

September 17 marked another birthday for Bruce Hoppe. The managing director of Emerson Electric-Thailand had a big surprise when his staff arranged a special birthday celebration. Birthday cakes, surrounded by candles, were spread on a well-decorated table on the company’s production floor.

Bruce’s fans surround him at his birthday party at Henry J Bean’s.

Several hundred employees gathered around, and Bruce invited everyone with a September birthday to join him at the table.

Tom Zofkie, operations manager of Emerson-Thailand, commenced the celebration with a birthday speech. Afterwards, everyone sang “Happy Birthday” and all the celebrants blew out the birthday candles.

Hundreds of his best employees and friends gathered round to witness Bruce blow out the candles on his birthday cake at the company plant.

While everyone partook of the birthday cake, a special video dedicated to Bruce was shown. The video featured birthday messages and performances from all Emerson-Thailand departments. Everyone in the plant, from the cleaning lady to the managers, had the chance to convey their special wishes. Bruce was all smiles after seeing the video, and it made him extremely proud of his Emerson family.

Bruce’s birthday celebration did not end at the plant – a dinner was held at Henry J. Bean’s at the Amari Resort Pattaya attended by the Emerson management staff. Some of Bruce’s other friends also dropped by, including Peter Malhotra, Sue K., and Peter Cummins of Pattaya Mail, Pat Burbidge and Zena Tarasena of Swinburne University, and Sandra Haeberli.

Bruce’s birthday video was shown on all the TV screens at Henry J. Bean’s. A great spread of American appetizers was served – chicken wings, tacos, onion rings - and everyone drank to their heart’s desire. Dinner was complemented with great music from the restaurant’s band. Everyone at the table had a great time. It was an inspiring and fun birthday celebration worth remembering.

The amount of 50,000 baht, drawn from the proceeds of the 2004 Pattaya Mail PC Classic Royal Cliff Beach Resort International Regatta, was used to purchase much-needed computer equipment for the Chonburi Family Court’s Observation and Protection Centre. In addition, the Centre was provided with nine Buddhist worship tables and a ceiling fan for the dormitory.

(L-R) PP Dennis Stark, Graham Hunt-Crowley, PP Kees Peperkamp, PP Peter Malhotra, Peter Cummins, Dr. Iain Corness, Panga Vathanakul, Alexander Hausler, Sakchai Khumchoo, Chonburi Observation and Protection Center director, Jon Tellefsen and Nick Bauer.

Panga Vathanakul, managing director of the Royal Cliff, who presided over the ceremony held at the Royal Cliff last week, had earlier noted that the Centre was in dire need of a computer and a colour printer and channelled this donation through the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya.

A number of Rotarians attended the formalities, supporting former Rotary president, Peter Malhotra who, on behalf of Rotary, made the presentation to Sakchai Khumchoo, director of the Chonburi Observation and Protection Centre.

Sakchai pointed out that there were presently 185 children at the Centre but, “Due to a lack of budget we have had problems acquiring equipment to manage the facility and providing needed items in the children’s housing quarters”.

Sakchai added, “The government is trying to solve this problem by distributing the number of children from the 76 provinces housed by the Child Welfare Services Department, thus relieving overcrowding at some of the other centres. Currently there is a total of 43 child welfare centres throughout the country.”

Decha Chalermyart

If you equate bovine with phlegmatic you haven’t yet seen Thailand’s famous buffalo races. This exciting and often hilarious event draws locals and tourists like a magnet.

Chonburi Province will hold its 133rd annual buffalo racing event in front of Chonburi town hall on October 27. However, the festival runs for entire week, beginning on October 22 and running through October 30.

This unique ‘day at the races’ is a long-held tradition in the province and is not to be missed. The races will divide the buffalos into 3 categories, small, medium and large. Additional fun activities will include a Miss Country contest and a buffalo decoration contest where the animals are judged on beauty and their costumes on creativity.

Other traditional games such as cow racing, lasso techniques, a tug-of-war, an oiled post climbing contest (not for the buffalos) and a boxing contest where the boxers are blind-folded will add to the gaiety.

All interested Thai and foreigners who would like to have a rare experience learning techniques of buffalo riding and wish to join the crowd to cheer the buffalo racers are welcome to attend the “Traditional Buffalo Race of Chonburi 2004”.

Suchada Tupchai

A cheeky Angelfish was the star of the show at a recent activity organized by Underwater World in Pattaya.

Underwater World Pattaya Company, SF Pattaya Cinema, and United International Picture Co. Ltd. cooperated to organize the showing of the animated cartoon, “A Shark’s Tale; A Mischievous Shark” on October 6.

Activities organized by the Underwater World staff in Pattaya in front of and inside the SF Cinema.

The presentation, the first outside Bangkok, was led by Underwater World’s MD Apiradee Bunsom, who also organized other special activities for the public including games and a question and answering session on ocean preservation. The well attended event aimed to promote awareness of the importance of marine conservation, particularly in Thailand.

“A Shark’s Tale; A Mischievous Shark” is a lovely story about “Oscar”, the heroic Angelfish who made up a story that he could kill a shark. Throughout the story he changes into a hero of the sea. The story was funny and lovely. Many well-known stars lent their voices to the characters, including Will Smith, Angelina Jolie, and Rene Zellwegger. The humor in this film provokes many ideas for sea and coral conservation.
