Marisa Malhotra receives the first ECIS Award for International Understanding
The European Council of International Schools announced
the winner of the very first Award for International Understanding at St.
Andrews International School in Rayong recently. This award was presented to
Marisa Malhotra, a 13 year old, outstanding Year 9 student of the school.
Marisa
Malhotra, a 13 year old, outstanding Year 9 student at St. Andrews
International School in Rayong was recently awarded the first European
Council of International Schools Award for International Understanding.
This prestigious mark of distinction is awarded to a
student who is a good representative of her own country, with a positive
attitude toward the life and culture of others, able to converse in at least
two languages, a contributing force in the life of the school, with the
ability to bring differing people together into a sense of community, thus
furthering the cause of international understanding.
Representing the ECIS at the presentation, David Lawder,
head of St. Andrews said, “ECIS established the prize to give public
recognition to those who best exemplify the principles of good international
citizenship. Thus this award carries with it not only our acknowledgement of
your achievements to date, but our sincere hope that your future will
continue to be marked by a commitment to goodwill and understanding amongst
all peoples. The international education you have experienced has clearly
given you an uncommon perspective on both the potential and the means for
co-operation amongst those of very different backgrounds. Your generation
faces great global challenges. We trust you will continue to use the special
talents and perspective recognised in the ECIS award for the furtherance of
international understanding.”
David continued, saying, “We are proud of you as a
product of one of our own international schools, and are happy to have had
the opportunity to offer this recognition. We are counting on you for the
future.”
Marisa expressed her uncontrollable excitement as she
received the ward, saying, “I thank my teachers for guiding me and
motivating me to participate in all the school activities, which I have in
turn been able to pass on to my fellow students of Keystage 3, giving them
motivation and determination to succeed in everything they do.”
Marisa went on to say, “I am very proud to be the first recipient of
this award at St. Andrews. This is a great honour for my family and me. My
parents will be very proud. I will work even harder in my studies and in
sports. I will continue to bond together children of every nationality and
religion into a family of love and international understanding. I wish every
one all the success in whatever they do and most of all I wish for ‘world
peace.”
A child’s destiny - urgent help needed!
Story and Photos by Peter Cummins
Members of the YWCA and the Lions Club recently took a
trip to Sattahip, where they were met by residents of a village who informed
the group of the plight of a family that needs urgent assistance.
YWCA President Nittaya Patimasongkroh was led to a hut in
one of the poorest areas of town, where she was introduced to Suthiwat, a
man laying in bed, unable to move. He told her that he had been involved in
an accident at work that had left him paralyzed from the waist down. The
employer has just abandoned him and is not paying him or giving him any sort
of allowance so he can support his family.
Suthiwat also explained that his wife could not work to
support the family because she is in jail for a drug offence. This left him
to try to fend for his young son, Anupong, who is only 9 years old. But as
fate would have it, the little boy is the one now left to take care of his
paralyzed father. The little boy cannot go to school or do any of those fun
things that a boy of 9 loves to do because he must stay home to nurse his
father.
The luckless family lives in a run-down hut, missing a
wall, without any electricity or water, and no bathroom. Food is scarce even
though neighbors bring them some food once in a while, but only what they
can spare as they are also poor people. They have to get by with an
allowance of 1,000 baht per month, which obviously doesn’t go very far.
Suthiwat needs urgent medical attention and pleads for
any help he can get. The YWCA has agreed to send the boy to school and pay
for his education, but the club is looking for any assistance they can to
seek medical help for the father.
The YWCA and the Rotary Club of Taksin Pattaya have put out an SOS asking
for help for this hapless family. If you feel you can be of help, either in
cash or kind please call Khun Nittaya at telephone number: 01-8170397 or fax
038-716316.

Who doesn’t know Laurent and Cristina Betourne! Laurent
was the general manager of the Mercure Hotel here in Pattaya and Cristina
was a member of the YWCA and quite involved in many charitable projects in
the community. Her most valuable contribution was her voice. She sang at
many charity concerts helping to raise quite a considerable sum of money for
underprivileged children’s education.
The
Betourne family, complete with their new addition - a beautiful baby girl.
Laurent was posted to Warsaw, Poland two years ago to
manage the Mercure property there, taking Christina and their two sons with
him.
They flew back to Pattaya for a visit last year when
Cristina was asked to perform at a charity concert, which also coincided
with the launching of our daughter publication, the Pattaya Blatt, the
German language newspaper for Thailand.
We have received good news that there is a new addition to the Betourne
family in the form of a sweet baby girl, Charlotte-Marie. Laurent and
Cristina - your friends in Pattaya send you their very best wishes and
congratulations on your lovely new daughter!
