Del Schloemer - The Old Lion is not forgotten

It is one year since the sudden passing of Del Schloemer, the multi-talented engineer who at 67 years of age was still managing industrial projects on the Eastern Seaboard. Del was one of those dynamic people who had the rare ability to see into the heart of engineering problems, and at the same time steal into the hearts of those around him. He left his wife Cherie, and many friends here in Thailand, all of whom remember him in so many different ways. Even at the Bira racetrack this month, mention was again made of Del, the winner of the inaugural race there in 1986. At that time Del was 54 years old, and the Bangkok newspapers said, “Old Lion Schloemer shows them how to do it!” And he certainly did.

In his obituary last year, I suggested that the last word about this talented man could come from Hans Dieter Westphal of Rieckermann Thai Engineering, for whom Del had been working for the last three years, who said, “They say that nobody is irreplaceable, but how do I replace someone like Del?” The simple answer is you cannot.

The Royal Cliff Wine Club educates the enthusiasts

by Miss Terry Diner

The Royal Cliff Wine Club held another tasting last week with Ekachai Mahaguna from Cannon Pacific wines as the moderator of the evening. This turned out to be a very educational evening, with Khun Ekachai, whose family owns the Domaine St. George Winery in the Sanoma Valley, California expounding on the differences between the descriptions of wines as being Vintage, Appellation or Varietal Content. He also explained how wine makers keep champagne wines to deliver a consistent quality and taste.

Ekachai Mahaguna (right) from Cannon Pacific moderated the last meeting of the Royal Cliff Wine Club.

Four wines were tasted from the New World, two from Chile and two from California, and the Wine Club members could be seen assiduously applying the tasting methods learned at the previous meeting.

The next meeting of the Wine Club should be a wine makers dinner in July and details will be published in the Pattaya Mail beforehand.

As a networking group, SKAL is a light-hearted club and as Murray Hertz (Caf? New Orleans) and a 30 year member of the club said, “We are here to enjoy ourselves as well as to do business.”The members welcomed the amusing speaker Joe Ratsamany, the director of industrial estate operations for Hemaraj Land and Development, who presented some interesting background details on the past, present and future of the Eastern Seaboard. From Joe’s talk, the best is yet to come, even more than the Eastern Seaboard’s 161% positive increase in investment value, year on year, last year.

Those who might like to apply for membership of the local SKAL Club should contact club secretary Andrew Wood (GM Royal Cliff Beach Resort) or president Murray.
