Winning women at GIS

Fielding a football team that for the first time incorporated three women, Garden International School enjoyed a stunning victory over two other international schools on Saturday 4th September.

GIS. were taking part in the triangular tournament against New International School from Bangkok and the home team, Pattaya’s own International School of the Regents.

(L-R) Kirsty Gascoin, Sue Burke and Leah Daniels helped GIS to two victories against other international school teams.

GIS were playing under the new leadership of Steve Turner, freshly arrived from English football. Steve was thrilled with the way the 6 new players in the team gelled, and was particularly pleased to have won whilst fielding the only mixed team in the tournament. Although Sue Burke has been playing for the team for the last year, Leah Daniels is newly arrived from the UK and it was the first time Kirsty Gascoin had made it off the substitute’s bench.

Ken Sullivan scored a magnificent goal within the first few minutes of the opening match against NIST. NIST replied with incredible speed and this provoked Ken into his second goal. Nico Sanchez appeared to be nearest the ball for the ambiguous third, whilst Simon Lees’ new boots came into their own during a spectacular fourth goal from the Bangkok visitors.

The second game saw GIS and their old rivals, ISR, playing the latest in a series of dramatic take-no-prisoner matches. ISR scored in the first half but it wasn’t until the second half that GIS were awarded a penalty as Nico Sanchez was hacked down in front of the goal, enabling Ken Sullivan to slide home his hat trick. Tensions were running high in the last few moments of play, when after a devastating cross by GIS striker Joe Steel, an unlucky ISR defender headed a definitive match sealer into his own goal.

Said Skipper “Skippy” Steve, “We went out there to enjoy the day and ended up winners.”

GIS and ISR were later to be found celebrating/drowning sorrows in Delaney’s.

Final Scores: GIS 4 NIST 3, GIS 2 ISR 1.

How many wheels on a Ferrari?

The wheels have almost fallen off Eddie Irvine’s World Championship struggle with the most bungled pit stop in the history of Scuderia Ferrari. The sight of several Italian mechanics staring at each other, each wondering where Irvine’s right rear wheel was hiding was totally ludicrous. The ensuing 28 second delay while they found it made sure Irvine remains the underdog as they move to the penultimate GP for 1999.

The European Grand Prix at Nurburgring last weekend was the most dramatic GP of the series so far. Rather than the traditional fight between drivers and machines, it was a fight between drivers, the weather, poor tyre choices by pit managers, shoddy pit crew work, mechanical maladies and anything else that the current crop of F1 jockeys could inflict on themselves. The end result was one that no one would ever have predicted.

Johnny Herbert wins at Nurburgring!

Even the start of the race was a shambles, with the starting lights staying on and several drivers moving while the rest of the grid stayed put. At the restart, Hakkinen in the McLaren made a good move on team mate Coulthard to move into second behind pole sitter Heinz-Harald Frentzen’s Jordan. The other Jordan with Damon Hill at the wheel failed in the middle of the corner with Alexander Wurz (Benetton) swerving to avoid him and clipping the Sauber of Diniz, which then barrel rolled down the track, ending upside down in the grass. Fortunately, his injuries were minor.

The race settled down for a few laps after the safety car pulled in, with Frentzen, Hakkinen, Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher (Williams) pulling away from the rest. Then came the first of many rain squalls. McLaren pulled in Hakkinen to change on to wet tyres, as did Ferrari for Salo and Irvine. As all three left the pits (after finding wheel number 4 for Irvine) the rain eased and the two World Championship contenders were now down in the lower half of the field on the wrong tyres.

Meanwhile, at the pointed end, Frentzen was putting space between himself and a brilliant battle between Coulthard and Schumacher Junior, with Schumacher in the underpowered Williams clearly superior.

And the rains eased again, with Frentzen and Coulthard pitting together and going out together in the same order, to have Frentzen’s Jordan expire one hundred metres from the pits. Coulthard must have thought all his Sundays had come at once and began to push as hard as he dare in the damp conditions, the choice having been to send him out on dry weather tyres. The rains worsened and the Scotsman’s chance ended up in the tyre wall as he slid off approaching the chicane, leaving Schumi junior in the lead. The very partisan crowd went wild and it looked as if Williams might just score their first victory for a while. This went “bang” with the right rear tyre and Schumacher limped to the pits to rejoin in 4th place.

Another flurry of pit stops and when the spray settled, it was not Deutscheland Uber Alles, but Britain’s Johnny Herbert in the tartan be-ribboned Stewart Ford at the front, followed by Jarno Trulli in the Prost and Barichello in the second Stewart Ford. Also in the points were the Minardi’s of Badoer and Gene, but poor Badoer’s car expired only a few laps from home, with the Italian dissolving into tears trackside while hugging his motor car!

Finally, Hakkinen was on the right tyres and stopped sulking in the mid field and began to press on, passing Irvine and then Gene to take 5th at the flag.

But the day belonged to Stewart Ford and Johnny Herbert, the perennial bridesmaid.

Paul Stewart (Jackie’s son) said, “Fortune may have been on our side somewhat but we did chose the right strategy - going with the hard tyres. The guys in the pit crew did an unbelievable job and we had two drivers who showed great commitment in tricky conditions. Who would have thought that two cars running tartan and a father and son wearing tartan trousers could win a Grand Prix?”

The Championship points now stand at Hakkinen 62, Irvine 60, Frentzen 50, Coulthard 48. There are two races to go and a theoretical 20 points available. The next race is in Malaysia at the new Sepang circuit on October 17th. Expect fireworks. The Hiring and Firing department at Ferrari has also been busy!

Lill a big winner at New Century

PSC Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker

Another large entry journeyed to New Century Golf Club for this week’s Pattaya Golf Society Stableford Competition.

The outstanding feature of the day was in division two where Betty Lill entered a prodigious 48 points. This was the highest score ever recorded by a female and there is nothing more certain than Betty’s handicap of 38 will come tumbling down. At New Century the Ladies Tees are quite advanced but Betty’s effort was most creditable.

A distant second was Keith Fornt on 35 points closely followed by Bill Chadwick with 34 points.

In Division One, recently returned Gur Hakze won well with 41 points, his first competition game for some time. Second was recent high scorer Bruce Lawrence of California with 39 points, another good performance. Third was consistent Joe Sparey scoring 36 points.

New Century can be considered a reasonably tough proposition and both Betty and Gur are to be commended for their performances.

Soggy week on the golf course

PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House

Wednesday, September 22 - Sriracha International Golf Club (Two Man Scramble)

1st: Malcolm Clare & George Jackson, 67 net
2nd: Stephen Beard & Mark Campbell, 68 net C/B
3rd: Wilf Latham & Harry Riley, 68 net

The Alternative Golf Gentlemen’s Society went to Sriracha for a two man scramble competition on Wednesday, 22nd of September. This was their first visit to Sriracha in almost two years and for some it was like seeing a long lost friend. For others, they were meeting the course for the first time. That was true of George “One Ball” Jackson who paired up with Malcolm Clare to win the tournament with a net score of sixty-seven.

The gentlemen from the Hare House are now pretty used to George dominating the pairs events (and doing a pretty decent job in the singles events as well). George has made it a dozen consecutive appearances on the podium in a pairs competition and in five of those matches he was paired with Malcolm Clare. This was their second win together. Maybe the Splinter Group could re-submit their invitation to “One Ball” to play with them again and give the guys in the Hare House a break. Take Malcolm too!

In second place with a net 68 were Stephen Beard and American Mark Campbell. Mark was the only player in the first three pairs who was not English. Perhaps that can be explained by the weather, which was dismal for the start of the competition. It rained hard and long, flooding the fairways and the greens. But to Sriracha’s credit, when it did stop raining the course was in surprisingly good shape. The English were heard remarking after the downpour “rain, what rain?”.

The third spot on the podium went to Wilf Latham and Harry “a wee one” Riley. They lost out on second place in a count back that went to the last six.

Friday, September 24 - Rayong Green Valley (Stableford)

1st: Claes Ernlund, 45 points
2nd: Murray Kerr, 41 points
3rd: Wilf Latham, 40 points

The rainy season has definitely caught up with the TAGGS team. At Green Valley on Friday, September 24, the gang from the Hare House held their weekly Stableford competition and for the second time in two days were caught out on the course in a thunder storm and were drenched to the bone.

Making his first appearance on the podium was Claes Ernlund. Claes plays off 36 and has never been in contention for a trophy or a prize. He skipped the second and third places and went right to the top with 45 Stableford points to take home his first Red Eyed Rabbit that goes to the weekly Stableford winner. Congratulations to Claes for winning and for breaking a hundred for the first time.

In second place and playing early with a contingent of the Canadian Mafia was Murray Kerr. “Muffy” shot an 81 off 14 and pulled in 41 points. It’s tough to play that well and lose, but it happens a lot. Wilf Latham was in the same boat, as he shot an 88 off 20 that was good for 40 points.

The last time the Hare House had three players with 40 points or more in a Stableford event was back in July. The course was also Green Valley. Maybe tough courses brings out the best in golfers.

Fitness Facts from the Royal Garden Spa & Fitness Club

Counting on Calories

Our ability to maintain the “status quo”, as far as body fat is concerned, largely depends on burning the same number of calories as we consume. Those calories that are not burned are stored as fat.

Many people resort to “crash diets” in a desperate attempt to lose those extra pounds. These are not only ineffective, they are harmful. Often these diets consist of a variety of costly food substitutes, which does nothing to educate the individual about sound nutritional principles.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), a proper weight loss program should include the following:

1. A caloric intake of not lower than 1,200 calories per day.
2. Weight loss of no more than two lbs. per week.
3. Behavior modifications in order to sustain long-term benefits.
4. Aerobic exercise for 20-30 minutes, three times a week.

Our ability to burn calories is largely a product of our metabolic rate. However, as you ingest less calories, the body will adapt by slowing down your metabolism.

Regular aerobic exercise will help to reverse this process and ensure that you burn calories not only during your workout, but also while at rest. The ultimate goal of course is to produce a negative energy balance, which means that you burn more than you consume.

It is also important to note that resistance training develops muscle mass, which in turn stimulates metabolic rate and helps in the calorie equation.

Most people wish to lose a little fat, but remember, the most effective weight loss programs are those which involve a sensible diet, regular exercise and long-term lifestyle changes.

Summary

1. Fat loss is based on reversing the calorie equation.
2. It is sensible to aim for a target weight loss at two lbs. per week.
3. Crash diets are costly, ineffective and potentially harmful.
4. Weight training can play an important part in increasing the metabolic rate.
5. Regular aerobic exercise of a moderate intensity is the most effective way of burning fat.
