Quarter Mile Thailand Championships - Round 1

The first round of the 12 meeting championships was held at the Bira International Circuit January 25th.

For many drivers this was their first opportunity to trial new modifications for this year’s championship. Turbocharging is still the most popular performance equipment, although several drivers were trying to get their NOX systems (Nitrous Oxide) tuned.

With the Time Bracket classification it is possible to enter more than one class with the same car and several drivers took advantage of this. The most successful with podium finishes in more than one class were M.R. Prakthak Rangsit, Nanthi Usayok, Ithiroj Phaholwas and Krisda Rachadaparkay.

Amongst those who have been knocking at the door of a championship placing was U.S. Embassy aide G. Bristol who finally managed a 2nd slot in the 20 second Bracket.

Crowd pleasers during the intermission were the power sliding Toyota Avanti’s, whilst the turbo-charged Toyota engined Mercedes put in some impressive times over the quarter mile.

Angles battle Demons

Alan’s Angels and Doug’s Demons staged an ethereal battle at the weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball game on Sunday, February 11. The Angels were not particularly blessed and the Demons not quite devilish enough as the teams split a doubleheader.

The Demons jumped out to a quick two run lead in the first game on Cazadero Doug’s run scoring double to right center. The Angels answered right back when Craig Big Bear smacked a two run homer in the bottom of the first.

The score remained tied until the third when the heavens smiled down on the Angels and Big Bear poked another homer. Before it was over, six Angels had scored.

In the fourth, John (Fowl Ball) Macallen contributed a two run shot giving the Angels a commanding lead. The final tally: Angles 10 - Demons 3.

The Demons caught fire in the second game, scoring one in the second inning and three in the third behind the hard hitting of Aloha Tom, M.J. (Coffee) Jim, and Gordon (Suspension) Bridges.

In the fourth, with one in, one out and two runners on, Sterling (Silver) Bechtel smacked a three run homer to increase the Demons’ lead.

The Angels appeared to wake up in the sixth, but after Big George (of the Jungle) connected on a hard smash to right, two Angels runners were caught off base ending the inning with a bizarre double play.

Down nine to two in the seventh, the Angels finally spread their wings with Billy Blooper and Craig (Top Gun) Lewis getting hits in front of Jimmy (The Key) Lockhead’s three run homer.

With six runs scored and the tying run on second, the Demons were able to stem the tide and escape with a nine to eight victory.

If you get a little devil in you, come on out to the field every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station on Sukhumvit Highway. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available. All are welcome.

Double triumph for Big John

Pattaya Golf Society visits to Siam Country Club (20/1/98) and Green Valley Rayong (27/1/98) turned into a double success for everyone’s favorite "bandit", Big John Williams.

Good turnouts for both tournaments ensured a good standard of competition. At Siam Country Club, Big John managed to keep his nerve despite a rather "soggy" last few holes to win the Stableford competition with 34 points. Big John held off a strong challenge from George Meigh, who also finished with 34 points but lost on count back. In third place with 31 points was Billy Russell and fourth and fifth, both with 30 points, were Colin Morgan and Dicky Barbe. Nearest to the pin prizes went to Big John #4, Stephan Karlsson #8, Colin Morgan #12, and George Meigh #16.

In the stroke play competition at Green Valley, Big John was again in excellent form to win with a level par net 72. In second place was Billy with a 2 over par net 74. John Hopkins finished third on plus 3 net 75. Fourth and fifth places were filled by Roy Mitchell and Bill Jones, both with net scores of 76. Nearest to the pin honors went to Big John #4 & #11, and Roy Mitchell #7.

A history quiz to test your nerves

Here are some real life trivial pursuits questions which have baffled Pattaya’s finest intelligentsia over the past year. All you do is answer true or false to each statement and check below. If you get them all right, your prize will be inward fulfillment and spiritual satisfaction of a high order.

1. Boot Hill is an Old West town.

2. It was impossible to go round the world in eight days when Jules Verne was alive.

3. Paper was first made by the ancient Egyptians.

4. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday died in shootouts.

5. Bucephalus was an ancient Greek God.

6. King John signed Magna Carta in 1215.

7. Sigmund Freud is buried in Germany.

8. Magellan was the first person to sail round the world.

Answers. All the statements are false. 1. Boot Hill was never a town but a cemetery. Try Tombstone for size. 2. Nellie Bly made it around the world from New York in 72 days in 1889. 3. Hardly, busy wasps deserve that honor. 4. Wyatt Earp died of natural causes in 1929 and dentist Doc Holliday died of tuberculosis. 5. Bucephalus was Alexander the Great’s horse. 6. As an illiterate, John had to append his royal seal. 7. Freud was cremated and his ashes are in Golder’s Green graveyard in London. 8. Not possible, as Magellan was killed in the Philippines before completing his voyage. The honor belongs to his crew.
