PATTAPA SPORTS ROUND-UP

Zvonareva successfully defends Pattaya Open title

Staff reporters and AP
Russia’s Vera Zvonareva successfully defended her Pattaya Open title last Sunday after beating hometown favorite Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
The top-seeded Russian collected her 10th career title and avenged her loss to the Thai in the second round at Wimbledon two years ago. She also became the first player to win the singles title two years in a row in the 19-year history of the event.

Later, in the doubles final, there was something for the local fans to feel more upbeat about as Tamarine teamed up with Marina Erakovic of New Zealand to down the Russian pairing of Anna Chakvetadze and Ksenia Pervak.
Zvonareva, who is on the comeback trail following ankle surgery in 2009, was in great form all week and only dropped one set throughout the tournament, in her semi final victory over third seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. Her quarter final match-up against Austria’s powerful left hander Sybille Bammer (a previous winner here in Pattaya) was seen as a potential ‘banana skin’ on her route to the final, but the 25 year old from Moscow was simply imperious as she dispatched the current world no 50 in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6.

Her semi final match against Shvedova was a closer affair and went to a deciding set with Zvonareva finally prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to book her place in Sunday’s final.
In the other half of the draw, Tamarine Tanasugarn found herself the sole Thai player left in the tournament after wild cards Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, Suchanun Viratprasert and Varatchaya Wongteanchai were all eliminated in the first round.
Despite having the hopes of the home fans resting squarely on her shoulders, Tamarine’s progress to the final was simply serene and included a great victory over the number 2 seed, Germany’s Sabine Lisicki in the second round, and a straight sets demolition of former world ranked number 5 player, Anna Chakvetadze in the quarter finals. Tamarine cemented her place in Sunday’s showdown with another emphatic display in the semi finals against Sesil Karatantcheva, dismissing the Kazakh player in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

In the final itself, played out in searing conditions in front of a packed crowd at the Dusit Thani tennis center, Zvonareva began by unleashing a mix of shots to keep her Thai opponent off balance and jumped to a 3-0 lead. With a 5-2 lead, the Russian had two set points at 15-40 on Tamarine’s serve but missed an easy backhand to lose the first before the Thai fought off the second with a good serve.
Tamarine held to follow at 3-5 and broke the next game for 4-5 as the Russian served three double faults. However, instead of seizing the opportunity, Tamarine sent two successive backhands to the net to drop the first set in 59 minutes.
Errors again plagued Tamarine in the second set as she was down a break at 2-4. But Zvonareva handed the break right back, serving a double fault and hit a backhand wide for the Thai to follow at 3-4.
Despite some disagreement on line calls, the Russian held the crucial ninth game to take a lead at 5-4 and forced the Thai into errors in the next game. She closed out the match on the second match point as Tamarine served a double fault. It was the Thai’s third loss in the singles final at the Pattaya Open.
Tanasugarn was magnanimous in defeat however and praised her Russian opponent.
“She played very well and hardly made any unforced errors,” she said. “I played better in the second set and knew I had to attack to win. I would have loved to have won for the fans but Vera was too strong.”
For her part Zvonareva commented that she was delighted to have successfully defended her title. “It was a very close match. Tammy’s been playing great throughout the tournament and Thailand should be proud of having such a great player. It has been an incredible week, I had great support from Russian fans and it was a wonderful atmosphere with the Thai fans cheering Tamarine. Very tough for me to defend my title. I hope to come back next year and try again,” said the Russian star.
Zvonareva picked up US$37,000 (1,258,000 baht) plus 280 points for her victory while Tamarine received US$19,000 (646,000 baht) plus 200 points.
In the women’s double final, Tamarine and her partner Marina Erakovic teamed up well and showed some fine net play to beat Russians Anna Chakvetadze and Ksenia Pervak. The Russians had the better of the opening exchanges, but once Tanasugarn and Erakovic got into their stride the match quickly turned in their favour. They overhauled their opponents to take the first set 7–5 and then walked away with the second set 6-1 to win the match in a little over one hour. In doing so Tamarine became the first player to successfully defend the doubles title after winning it last year with Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.

Pattaya United finalizing new youth squad

Ariyawat Nuamsawat
The Pattaya United football team will finish selecting young players to join its official youth team Feb. 20.

Pansak Ketwattha, manager of the Pattaya United, fields questions from the press about the new youth team set-up as Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon looks on.

At a Feb. 12 press conference, Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon and Pansak Ketwattha, manager of Pattaya United, said the new youth team called for by Asian Football Confederation rules will be finalized at the Nongprue Municipality field this coming Saturday.
The Thai Premier Youth League will serve as a kind of farm system for the professional clubs, as well as build the team’s popularity and fan base, Pansak said. There will be 10 teams with players aged 22 or younger. Five players from each team can be used as alternates by their parent clubs.
Pansak said he is focusing on selecting players 20 years old or younger for the next season, but noted not all will come from within the Pattaya city limits. He has placed Assistant Coach Wisut Wichaya in charge of the new squad.

City keep up the pressure on their rivals

MBMG International League 2009/10

Paul Frain
Pattaya City played Sunbelt last weekend with the Pattaya outfit needing a win to make sure they kept well ahead of the second and third place teams.
In a slow start to the match it was a full ten minutes before there was a shot at goal, and it came from a Sunbelt player who forced a good save from City’s keeper. Pattaya midfielder Patrice Love sent probing balls through the Sunbelt defense, but the City forwards were seemingly on a different wavelength and couldn’t get on the end of them. However, the deadlock was finally broken when City received a free kick and Love sent the ball to Peter Ndjanna who made no mistake to make it 1-0. City soon doubled their lead when Emmanual Tshuma took the ball down the wing, exchanged passes with Patrice Love, and centered for Sunbelt’s centre half to score an own goal to make it 2-0 to City.
Despite the lead, the Pattaya team were still not showing much urgency and played out the rest of the half to go in at the break 2-0 up.
After the restart Pattaya City began piling on the pressure and it wasn’t long before they extended their lead when David Brown’s 35 yard free kick beat the Sunbelt keeper to make it 3-0. Sunbelt replied soon after with a goal of their own, following some sloppy play by the City defense, but Pattaya restored the three goal cushion when winger Emmanual Tshuma scored from an acute angle to make it 4-1. The icing was put on the cake before the final whistle when Peter Ndjanna put a great ball through to Craig Banks who made no mistake to make it 5-1 to City.
Pattaya City are now eight points ahead in the league but second and third places have games in hand.

FC Nova concede late goals
After last week’s cup game defeat, FC Nova wanted to get back on winning track in their league match against Bangkok United last weekend, who were one place above FC with a game in hand, so a win was a must.
Both teams played attacking football and it was United who took the lead midway through the first half, and shortly after a superb diving header made it 2-0 to the Bangkok team. FC played some neat football, but their forwards did not take the chances they were offered and went into the break 2-0 down.
Following the restart FC played a lot better and the Bangkok keeper was kept busy until a free kick by FC’s Lee Homer reduced the arrears to 2-1. Paul Darbyshire then went close a couple of times as FC took control and were applying great pressure to the United defense.
Another good run by Darbyshire brought a great save from the United keeper but chances went begging for FC and tempers began to flare on both sides with FC having a player sent off.
The extra man enabled Bangkok United to take back the momentum in the game until they too had a player dismissed to even up the numbers. However the Bangkok team had by now wrestled the initiative from Nova and scored three times late in the game to make the final score 5-1. It was a disappointing result for FC Nova as points are vital at this stage of the season.
Note: If there is anybody who would like t try out for a game with FC Nova, training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights under lights on Siam Country Club Road.

Siriporn qualifies for Youth Olympic Games

Pasakorn Chan-Ngam
Thai junior windsurfer “Nong Dao” aka Siriporn Kaewduang-Ngam secured automatic qualification to the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore later this year with a resounding victory in the Techno 293 woman’s event at the Asian Windsurfing Festival, held at the end of last month at the Water Sports Center in Jomtien.

Pattaya Mayor Itthipol Kunplome, right, presents the winning plaque to “Nong Dao” Siriporn Kaewduang-Ngam, the winner in the Techno 293 woman’s fleet at the Asian Windsurfing Festival, Jan. 23.

Going into the final day of the 10-race competition, Nong Dao, a Gold medalist from the 1st Asian Youth Games in Singapore last year, was still chasing one of the final two qualifying places left open. She wasn’t about to disappoint her fans however and was a comprehensive winner in the last two races to secure her place on the flight to Singapore. Nong took overall victory in the class on 21 penalty points, ahead of China’s Lin Hai Xia (30pts) and Hong Kong’s Man Ka Ket (33pts).
In the men’s competition there was disappointment for Thailand as both Kitpat Pantawee “Nuk” and Nakaret Wantana failed to finish in the top two positions and thus will miss out on competing at the Singapore Games.
In other classes at the Jomtien Windsurfing Festival, Thailand cleaned up in the Mistral One Design with the top three places going to local sailors: Nawin Singsart was the overall winner ahead of Seksan Khunthong and Nattapong Phonopparat. The same home dominance also occurred in the Race Board Overall class with Ek Bunsawat placing first ahead of compatriots Panutat Ruamsap and Apichat Tiptammak.

Sattahip boxers take top honors at 5th Golden Gloves

Saksiri Uraiworn
Amateur boxers from Sattahip all but swept individual and team honors at the 5th Pattaya Youth Golden Gloves boxing competition, which wrapped up at Thepprasit Boxing Stadium Feb. 8.

Young fighters go toe to toe at the 5th Pattaya Youth Golden Gloves boxing competition held at the Thepprasit Boxing Stadium.
The “Sattahip A” team took home a trophy and 8,000 baht in prize money as five of its members took all but three of the individual titles.
The Golden Gloves contest is held each year to choose Chonburi’s representaives for national boxing programs, as well as give its participants a diversion from drugs and helps promote the province.

Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh, left, presents the trophy to a representative of the winning Sattahip A team.
The results by class for the winners were as follows: Cottonweight (under 38 kg.): Nnopasit Towa (Chonburi Sukabot A); Miniweight (under 40 kg.): Kritsana Srisang (Sattahip A); Paperweight (under 42 kg.): Nattapol Namwan (Srisaket Physical School); Pinweight (under 45 kg.): Chaiya Ruamthan (Sattahip A); Light Flyweight (under 48 kg.): Chairat Pirom (Sattahip A); Flyweight (under 51 kg.): A-Non Chanpat (Sattahip A); Bantamweight (under 54 kg.): Ekachai Prenaram (Srisaket Physical School); Featherweight (under 57 kg.): Prapat Chanabun (Sattahip A); Lightweight (under 60 kg.) Weerapol Bunpa (Srisaket Physical School).

Chonburi volleyball team off to a winning start

Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon, seated center, along with Supab Intaraksa (Secretary of the Chonburi Sports Association), seated left, and Kritsada Puttipipatkachorn (Secretary of the Chonburi Volleyball League Club), seated right, co-chair a press conference February 9 at Pattaya City Hall to announce the participation of the new Chonburi team in the national volleyball league 2010.

Vimorlat Singnikorn
The Chonburi volleyball team “Chalam Chon V.C.” has made a winning start to the 5th Volleyball Thailand League which is scheduled to run from January 30 – May 22, 2010.
The newly created team is participating in the male category against 8 teams on a home and away competition system, with Chonburi playing all their home matches at the Muang Pattaya School 7 Sports field.
Earlier this month the side got off to a successful opening to their inaugural campaign with moral boosting victories against both Nakhon Ratchasima and Suphanburi. The Eastern Seaboard outfit features several present and former national team players on its roster including Kritsada Somkanae, Nopporn Chantim, Surachai Churat and Sarayut Yutyong, and is strongly favoured to do well this season.
The next fixture for the Chalam Chon V.C. high flyers is on February 27 against Nontaburi with a tough fixture against Saraburi the following weekend on March 6. Chonburi will play their final pool game against Kamphangphet later next month and will hopefully have already qualified for the knock-out stages by then.

A fair looking leaderboard

PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

It seemed like Ladies Day… and it was! Poottida Murphy came slamming in with a total of 39 points to take the top spot, followed closely by Piranan Phanchai with a 38.

Flight winner Poottida Murphy (left) with runner-up Piranan Phanchai.

A great turn out this 10th of February as 7 groups teed off at Pattaya Country Club. The course was in fine condition but some of the greens were a bit hard (or were the putters too strong?) For once the Marshall asked players to speed it up, unfortunately he was asking the wrong groups, Oh well!
Coming in close behind the ladies were Herbie Ishinaga and Mark Campbell, both with 37 points. Sus Ige came in fifth with a 36 followed by Bob Benda and Joe St. Laurent, each with 35 points. From there the cards meandered down to a low of 24.
As usual Herbie provided chips and stuff plus the ever present hot dogs as well as a sausage configuration that looked like a meat loaf and was delicious. Lots of beverages came out of the cooler to be enjoyed by all.

Forty what? Straub & Cogan blitz the field

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, Feb. 8, Burapha - Stableford
A full field of 56 Outbackers started from a two tees on the Cypress & Dune nines. Capt’ Bob was once again kind, letting everybody go from the white tees. Burapha was generally very busy reflecting the current glut of golfers in the area, however most groups were round in less than four and a half hours. The greens were slick and the course elsewhere was in its customary good condition.

Johnny Cogan (45pts) and Walt Straub (48pts) having removed their masks.

Large fields enable close grouping of handicaps in the divisions arguably making for more competitive golf; and today was no exception. It was quite remarkable the similarity of each division with two players in each of the four, beating their handicap and the third and fourth places in A, B & C were all decided with 34 points.
Top scorer was Owen Lloyd, who had the round of his life (44pts) following his 14 points at Khao Kheow of Friday but nevertheless, as a visitor, will find his handicap reduced to 11 next time he plays in Pattaya. Lloyd won Div B by seven from regular Outbacker, Tony Garnett with 37.
Elsewhere, Capt’ Bob headed Div A with 39 points from Raji on 37 points and two Irish adversaries back on 34, Vin & Peter. Mark Riggall, on a quick R & R trip, demonstrated that he hadn’t forgotten how to play the game, with an excellent 41 points to win Div C from Peter Stonebridge back on 37.
Bruce McAdam (Div D winner) continued his find form with 39 points, earning himself another two ladder points and stretching his lead in that competition, having won last month; Martin O’Neill continues to improve and took second with 38 from two players back on 36 points, Ed Delaney & Nev Steward, who returns to Aus imminently.
There were four ‘2’s from Steve Milne, Nick Sidhu, Peter Ennis & Mitch Black (another player who was having his last game with the Outback, as he returns to Seattle, coaching golf)
Div A (0-11)
1st Bob Philp (8) 39pts
2nd Amarjit Banwaitt (7) 37pts
3rd Vin Connellan (11) 34pts
4th Peter Ennis (10) 34pts

1st Owen Lloyd (13) 44pts
2nd Tony Garnett (12) 37pts
3rd Chris Davisson (13) 34pts
4th Kim Stoke (13) 34pts

1st Mark Riggall (16) 41pts
2nd Peter Stonebridge (16) 37pts

4th Neville Steward (20) 36pts
Tuesday, Feb. 9, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Another fine Tuesday morning for the 23 Outbackers who made their way to this local ‘value for money’ course. There were holiday makers Arthur Brick and Noel Taylor with us today as well as ‘local lad’ Ray Spence and our very own General Jack.
The course was busy but as is the norm we were away at our allotted time and again as is usual there were no ‘intruders’ at the 10th – well done PCC.
In England we have a saying ‘every dog has its day’ out here we say ‘every golfer has their day’ and so it was with two of our group, exceeding their expectations with rounds of 45 and 48 points!
There were no 2’s so it was two divisions with four places in each.
In the top spot in the A Flight was regular Outbacker the long hitting ‘Irish Rogue’ John Cogan (20) with a massive 45 points – including a birdie on the index 1 hole (14th) worth 5 points and a ‘blob’ on the par 3 16th! Well done John and continue to smile with you new handicap. The remaining places were taken by three regular Outbackers with ‘local lass’ Suzi Lawton (18), second on 37 points, ‘The Colonel’ Bob Pearce (13), third (35pts), and in fourth, despite being the organiser for the day and taking a few cans on board was ‘Chad’ Barry Chadbourn (18) with 34 points.
In B Flight we had Walt Straub (29) making one of his rare appearances with us today and no doubt he was pleased he did as he had the ‘round of his life’ with a gigantic 48 points! and another handicap adjustment. Some 16 points behind were three players that were the best of us mere mortals, all with 32 points - John Stafford (21) 2nd, Noel Taylor (22) 3rd, and Nigel Cannon (22) 4th.
Another enjoyable and friendly day; and remember the Outback are here every Tuesday with a 09.30 tee time.
Div A (0-20)
1st John Cogan (20) 45pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (18) 37pts
3rd Bob Pearce (13) 35pts
4th Barry Chadbourn (18) 34pts
Div B (21+)
1st Walt Straub (29) 48pts
2nd John Stafford (21) 32pts
3rd Noel Taylor (21) 32pts
4th Nigel Cannon (22) 32pts
Wednesday, Feb. 10, The Emerald - Stableford
Top score of the day went to Rosco with 39 points to win Div B by three from Barry Ennis (36pts), Bob Lindborg (34pts) and Joe Mooneyham (32pts) making his return at last after a long absence from the podium. In contrast, Colin Rees’ claim to fame (9pts) was the longest run of blobs on a scorecard.
Bruce McAdam continued his purple patch, clearly too comfortable off his handicap of 21, with 37 points to collect another two ladder points and second place in Div C. His good buddy, B1 (Bruce Milner) did well today, being one of three players, all with 36 points in Div A. Bruce’s earned him second place on count back from Owen Lloyd, off his new handicap of 11, and Capt’ Bob, also having a good week.
Other notable scores from the 40 Outbackers that played came from Kev Waycock (38pts), winner of Div A, David Davies (38pts) winner of Div C, Sugar Ray (35pts) and Geoff Doody (32pts), returning to the game after a month or so, skiing in Europe. Welcome back Geoff!
There were five ‘2’s, four of which were the conventional kind, from Kev Waycott, Raji, Barry Ennis and Eddie Middlewood. The fifth one came on the par 4 second hole as Mark McDonald fired his tee shot over the trees to about 8 inches, for his tap in eagle. Great shot Mark!
Div A (0-12)
1st Kev Waycock (9) 38pts
2nd Bruce Milner (13) 36pts
3rd Owen Lloyd (11) 36pts
4th Bob Philp (8) 36pts
Div B (14-17)
1st Rosco Langoulant (15) 39pts
2nd Barry Ennis (16) 36pts

Div C (18+)
1st David Davies (25) 38pts
2nd Bruce McAdam (21) 37pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (19) 35pts
4th Geoff Doody (18) 32pts
Friday, Feb. 12, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Friday we played Khao Kheow A & B loops; the course, as per usual, was in great condition and we were off to an early start, all 49 Outbackers. I think this golf course gets harder every time we play it and that was again reflected in the scores.
There was some doubt about the Sugar Man (Div D winner), as he was seen washing two balls in the lake on the last hole (B9) but I guess if you have 40 points from seventeen holes that should do the trick. Just kidding Sugar that was a great round of golf mate.
We nearly had two ‘holes in one’, both on the island green (B8), one of our Aussie contingent hit the flag and stopped six inches from the hole and another of the Irish boys did the same. Good shots fella’s.
The girls did the business again; come on boys, we have taken two shots off their handicap and they still come home with the bacon. Little Kung (Second Div D) will have a handicap review after a superb 39 points, and the Sugar will not be missed either along with Bruce Milner (Div B winner), they were the only players to break there handicap.
Raji’s looking comfortable on his 7 h’cap, scoring 36 points to win Div A from Vin Connellan 34 points, whilst George Bishop and Lawrie McBride filled the minor places in Div B. Jum (36pts) off h’cap 18) took Div C from another lady in second, Suzi Lawton with 32.
There were six ‘2’ from Raji, Neil Herd, Steve Plant, Neil Lavery, Pat Regan & Chris Dopp
Div A (0-12)
1st Amarjit Banwaitt (7) 36pts
2nd Vin Connellan (11) 34pts
3rd Peter Ennis (10) 32pts
Div B (13-15)
1st Bruce Milner (13) 37pts
2nd George Bishop (14) 33pts
3rd Lawrie McBride (14) 32pts
Div C (16-18)
1st Jum Karagit (18) 36pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (16) 32pts
3rd Kevin Hamilton (18) 32pts
Div D (19+)
1st Sugar Ray Handford (19) 40
2nd Kung Pimjun (22) 39pts
3rd Mike Quill (20) 33pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or for more information visit www.outbackgolfbar.com.

John ‘big easy’ Hartigan lifts the medal

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, Feb. 7, Green Valley - Medal
A Flight
1st Seamus Cotter (11) net 68
2nd Jack Grindvold (6) net 69
3rd Ian Halfpenny (11) net 70
B Flight
1st John Hartigan (17) net 66
2nd Gabriel Enright (18) net 68
3rd Chaten Patel (14) net 69
Red Flight
1st Mike Craighead (18) net 67
Near Pins: No2 Marc Napier, No9 Jack Grindvold, No12 Bob Linborg, No16 Bob Paterson.
The monthly medal was brought forward this Sunday to accommodate the prestigious Captain’s day scheduled for the following week, but no one told El Terry Purr who returned a modest 30 stableford points, before a pick up on the seventeenth all but dashed Tel’s hope of reviving his card.

Monthly medal winner John Hartigan (left) with the golf manager.

The next part of this report is an automatic transmission – “Captain Seamus Cotter wins A Flight again” - end of automatic transmission. OK the scribe is back at the computer; Seamus returned a solid net 68 for the senior flight glory. Well I must say at least he left the Medal intact. Jack Grindvold pushed Seamus all the way, coming up just a shot short. Ian ‘Lose Change’ Halfpenny, no stranger himself to the limelight, rounded out the flight a further stroke back.
It took a Kerry man to keep Seamus at bay in the junior flight as ‘The big easy’ John Hartigan posted a flawless net 66 to win the medal and advanced to the gold medal to be played later in the year. Aussie ‘Good on yer sport’ Gabriel Enright carded a net 68 for second, leaving ‘Fast’ Chaten Patel to fill the flight. Chaten was left to rue a ‘10’ on the seventeenth that ended his medal hopes and caused a log-jam to rival that during an M25 rush hour.
Well done Mark Bonner on posting his first ever Eagle, or should that be an Eaglet as it was posted on the prolific par 5, 14th.
The red flight medal saw Michelle ‘the Mechanic’ win again with a terrific net 67.
Back at the ranch big John was presented with the medal as Michele was presented with a flimsy pair of ladies briefs; steady Mike.
Lewiinski’s welcomed new comers Brian and Lyn Comer.
Monday, Feb. 8, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Regan (11) 34pts
2nd Jeff Horsfield (8) 33pts
B Flight
1st Mark Morris (17) 33pts
2nd Morten Esseth (19) 33pts
On a day that resulted in the PSC handicap committee having the day off as far as the Lewiinski’s returns were concerned. Co. Dublin’s Pat Regan put together a best of the day 34 points, for the day’s honours and A Flight glory. Jeff Horsfield was a shot back for second place
B Flight was even less dramatic as Mark Morris and Morten Esseth posted a mere 33 points each for a count back decision, which gave Marks inward nine the edge over Morten.
Jimmy Guidera and Peter Hedenbergh split the ‘2’s pot.

1st Seamus Cotter (11) 37pts
2nd Jeff Horsfield (8) 37pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (7) 36pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (16) 35pts
2nd Mark Morris (17) 34pts
3rd Roland Bangator (21) 33pts
You can’t fault Jeff Horsfield’s 37-point effort, but it wasn’t as favorably distributed as Seamus ‘the clean up captain’ Cotter’s, so the latter took pole position for the second time this week. Peter LeNoury filed an even par round for the third spot.
The Donkey, back at his old pasture, took prime position in the junior flight with a solid 35 points. Well he haw he haw to do it at his home club. Mark Morris was a point back for second and third place is as yet to be settled as Sean Murphy and Roland Bangator tied on 33 points apiece.
A complaint was lodged that Roland was using a thingamajig that supplied too much information. The offending range finder is to be brought to the golf manager to examine before a verdict can be given. Hopefully we can sort it out by Friday.
James Bell and Steve Weller split the ‘2’s pot - Steve’s ‘2’ by the way was an eagle on the par 4 seventh hole.
Jimmy ‘Houdini’ Bell failed to get a slot on the Australia’s got talent show as an escape artist. Jimmy got stuck in the shower at Crystal Bay when the door jammed, and so he missed his audition.
Friday, Feb. 12, Greenwood – Stableford
A Flight
1st Jack Grindvold (6) 36pts
2nd Ed Wyckoff (12) 35pts
3rd Ted Lodge (11) 34pts
B Flight
1st Mark Morris (17) 38pts
2nd Colm Mullen (16) 36pts
3rd Jim Elphick (22) 33pts
Jack Grindvold, who missed the Lou-inskis free draw twice this week, made up for it today by posting an even par round to take top notch in the senior flight. Ed Wyckoff came in a shot adrift for second and Ireland’s Ted lodge was a further shot back for third spot.
B Flight provided the top score of the day as Mark Morris carded a solid 38 points. Irishman Colm ‘I’m in the money’ Mullen was two shots back (a no score on the sixteenth proving very costly), and by the way I received your solicitor’s letter this morning thank you very much. ‘Jersey Jim’ Elphick filled the flight with 33 points.
Jack Grindvold and Michael Goggin split a handy ‘2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in, and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Brian Gabe back in form

PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg

The Admiral (left) with Thursday’s winners,
Carole Kubicki, Jesper Rasmussen & Brian Gabe.

Peter Blackburn
Monday, Feb. 8, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Just one short of a full field of forty golfers, welcomes were handed out today to Barry & Wilma Lemming from England and after paying our green fees etc. we arrived at the first tee to be told there was no booking for us. This does not happen when The Admiral pre-organizes our bookings via the PSC office so it was obviously an error by the golf course people. However, not to worry as we were invited to tee off the first tee straight away and as our first group was a three-ball, due to the absence of yours truly, the Admiral and his two playing partners breezed around the course in three hours and fifty minutes.
If anyone is thinking it was due to my absence then forget it – I can play three holes in the same time it takes Marcel Wittwer to play a tee shot! I must also mention that one of our mini buses got lost both going and returning to and from Treasure Hill – some counseling from Boon our transport coordinator required there I fear!
That man Monte Sykes did it again by taking out A Flight by one point from Richard Kubicki, who beat Mike “Hunter” Gosden on a count back. Doug Maiko finished one point further back in fourth place.
B Flight was won by Leif Kirkgaard, with Andre van Dyk one point behind in second place. Stu Rifkin got on the podium once more by finishing third with Mike Winfield fourth.
The going appeared tough in C Flight with Cilia Bosman’s 32 points enough to win. A count back saw Martyn Topham finish second ahead of Mike Herridge with Ulla Ravn in fourth spot.
Unfortunately the Admiral’s poor form continued and he was awarded the “Compass” award for a new world record sixth consecutive time. Don’t worry Dave – I’m back next Monday!

Thursday, Feb. 11, Rayong C.C. - Stableford
Once more a very good turnout and 44 golfers departed Café Kronborg for the trip to Rayong Country Club where our scheduled tee off time was 1030. Upon arrival there was no delay, in fact our first group teed off early at 1010 in fine but hot conditions. The improving course was in good condition although most found the greens a little slow and the first group managed to complete their round in four hours & 10 minutes.
Brian Gabe returned to the winner’s circle by winning A Flight from Don Richardson, who beat Monte Sykes on a count back for second place. Paul Avery finished fourth with Doug Maiko fifth.
Jesper Rasmussen had a great round and easily won the B Flight from Elias Magnusson in second. Mike Winfield finished third, Per Anders Karlsen was fourth and Brendan Byrne fifth.
The ladies dominated C Flight and took the first three places with Carole Kubicki victorious over Cilia Bosman and Susan Gaarde. Walter Schober beat Eddie Glinsek on a count back for fourth place.

A good day for Lay

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

Rayong Country Club was on the agenda again for the Pattaya Golf Society on Sunday, February 7, and another large friendly field turned out to test their skills against Sir Nick’s excellent design. The cut was at fourteen and under and the group got away on time as always.
The second flight saw the inclusion, some may say relegation, of some usually top flight golfers and two of these, Wilf Latham and Tore Eliassen, showed their class by sharing the honours with 36 points each, two ahead of Ronnie Ramsay.
In the top flight “Mr Consistency” Ray Banks came third with 35 points, one behind Paul Butler’s second place finish. The winner with the best score of the day was new member Jon Lay and the Englishman’s 37 points represented the day’s best gross as well, 77.
The ‘2’s were shared by Jon Lay, Mike Earley and Steve Evans in the top flight and Tore Eliassen, Wilf Latham and Ronnie Ramsay elsewhere. The Booby Bevy went to Ed Findlay, still struggling to get to grips with his game after some weeks of inactivity in Scotland.
It had been another good Sunday at Rayong with a good “Lay” into the bargain!
PJ’s rare bird
Arguably Khao Kheow is the finest golf challenge in the area and on Tuesday, February 9 the Pattaya Golf Society visited to play a stableford competition over the A and B nines with the large field divided into two flights at fifteen and under. The course was extremely well presented and there were some pin positions which were challenging to say the least, especially on A5, the short par three.
The group got away on time following a large group of “holiday” golfers from another Pattaya venue and a five hour round was in prospect as the tourists did their best to lengthen the time they would be away from the heat and bustle of the city.
Scores were at the customary low level for the majority of the field but in the first flight David Thomas came up with a fine 34 point card to take a share of second place with Brian Beaupre on the eve of his departure for Canada. The flight winner was Pete Sumner, his 35 points representing a good round from the nine-handicapper. Pete, David and Mike Earley all shared the flight ‘2’s pot for their efforts on A5, B8 and B3 respectively.
In the second flight Vic Barton’s 34 points brought him third place, one behind the 35 of Larry Slattery. Amazingly the winner, Phil “PJ” Mitchell amassed the highest PGS winning score there for more than three years, forty points being a rare bird indeed at Khao Kheow, in anyone’s book. His round was all about consistency and steady course management and staked an early claim for the round of the year with ten months still to go. In the second flight the ‘2’s pot was shared by Jim Ferris and Simon Spinks, both on A5.
The Booby Bevy went to returning member two-handicapper Doug Williams who found on the first tee that his golf shoes were starting to disintegrate after a long period without his loving care and by the eighth he was left to play in the uppers only, with the merest hint of leather between him and the hallowed ground at Khao Kheow and his round disintegrated similarly thereafter.
The day had been one to remember for “PJ” but all who were there thoroughly enjoyed golf at its best at Khao Kheow.
Wins for Talbot & Bone
Green Valley played the perfect host to the Pattaya Golf Society on Thursday, February 11 when the group played a stableford merit event over the finely prepared course. The Asian golfers are slowly returning to their frozen wastes for the rest of the winter and the course is once again a great venue for high season golf.
The PGS group formed two flights divided at sixteen and under and scores were very good with the full field average being 32 points plus.
In the competitive second flight Jim Ferris and Jack Robertson shared second place with 36 points each, three behind new member Alan Bone debuting on the course on his first visit to the Kingdom.
In the tightly contested top flight Tony Thorne found some semblance of his true form with an excellent 38 points for third place whilst Ray Banks, so consistent always, fired 39 points for runner-up place. The flight winner was Brian Talbot and his 40 point card was a fitting way to close his short golfing trip this time, but a score like that always brings you back.
The best gross of 75 was achieved by young Czech Republic golfer David Prohazka, playing off plus two, and the round will add to his experience of quality golf courses as he seeks to pursue a career in the higher echelons of the sport.
The top flight ‘2’s pot was shared by Wichai Tananusorn (2) and Paul McNally (9) whilst sole ownership of the second flight pot went to Yvonne Earley who also picked up a rare Booby Bevy after some locker-room pranks - allegedly - with some Korean teenagers hiding certain articles of clothing. Sartorially correct these PGS members!
After the general mayhem caused by the Korean visitors to the clubs routine it was good to get back on track at Green Valley.

Testing times at Navy

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, February 8, Plutaluang – Stableford
After a chat with the starter at Plutaluang we were allocated the North and West courses today, in our opinion the two toughest at this venue.

‘Eternal bridesmaid’ Peter Grant is still awaiting his first win after finishing second yet again at Eastern Star and Green Valley.

In her first round ever here on this course, and playing off a nine handicap, Jan Burrows took second place in the ladies competition with 22 points, whilst Else Knudsvik was the winner with 26 points. This was tough a challenge for the ladies today.
Embarrassed by his winning score of 33 points to win Division 2, Andy Oz still turned up at the presentation to collect his prize. Alan Bissell beat his arch rival Andy Crabb on a 19/17 back nine count back for second place after they both came in with 30 points and ‘count back’ Burnie lost out yet again on 16 points.
In his last game but one before his departure back to the UK for 3 months, Pete Sumner won Division 1 with 37 points while Bryan Rought came in second on 32 points after beating Dennis Scougall on an 18/16 count back.
In the ‘2’s competition, with a rollover from Rayong C.C., a birdie on the 8th on the West course kept Tony Duthie smiling. There were no 2’s in the second division.
Near pins went to (Div 1) Paul Burrows, Tony Duthie, Tony Duthie and Dennis Scougall, and (Div 2) Andy Crabb, John Harvey and Barry Rawlinson.
Wednesday, Feb. 10, Green Valley – Stableford
It was an overcast day upon arrival and a cool nine holes before the clouds dispersed and a very hot back nine was experienced by all.
It is very rare on this course for anyone in our four divisions out today not to break 36 points. The highest scores of the day however were in the ladies comp and Division 3 where 35 points was the winning score for Patsad Ryves, alias Miss Sang, while second place went to Noi Emersson on 31 points. David Phillips took his first ever podium position with us by winning the third division, also with 35 points. Peter Grant was second two points behind and in third place and beating ‘the old man’ on a back-six count back of 10/9 after they both finished with 31 points was Gordon Everingham.
After his return from Estonia, and now playing off 7, Raivo Velsberg took out Division 1 with his 34 points while Don Head beat Mr. Kermit for second on a back 9 count back of 16/15 after they both finished with 33 points.
Wilf Latham, Ron Miller, Bob Poole and Raivo Velsberg split the ‘2’s pot four ways in Division 1 and there were still no winners in Division 2 or the Ladies.
Near pins were claimed by (Ladies) Miss Noi, (Div 1) Wilf Latham, Ron Miller and Raivo Velsberg (x2), and (Div 2) Alan Bissell, Andy Crabb and David Phillips.
Friday, Feb. 12, Eastern Star – Stableford.
Another strong field turned out at our regular Friday course and compared with the last couple of weeks there was hardly anybody here. In fact the first four-ball out went round in three hours forty minutes, unheard of for this time of the season.
Tony Barritt’s 37 points was unbeatable in Division 1 and Alan Griffiths beat Pete Sumner for the runner up spot on a back-nine count back of 19/18 after they both finished with 34.
Wilf Latham was the winner in Division 2 with an impressive 39 points while Jakob Knudsvik beat Tony Duthie, also on a 19/18 count back, after they finished with 33 points each.
Glyn Evans took top honours in Division 3 with a meagre 31 points while 1 point behind was Peter Grant, who beat David Phillips on a 4/3 back two count back.
Miss Faa took the Ladies title with 32 points followed by Else Knudsvik on 28 and in third position was Miss Noi with 27.
Mikael Andersson shared the ‘2’s in Division 1 with Alan Griffiths and two rollovers ensued in Division 2.
Near Pins went to (Ladies) Miss Faa (x2) and Miss Noi, (Div 1) Mikael Andersson (x2), Paul Burrows and Ron Miller, and (Div 2) Randy Flello (x2) and Geoff Picken.

Player numbers get higher and higher

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Saturday winners: Laurinn Brinn, Billy Ostle, Mod Chaviraksa,
Ted Senior, Tewin Lamthong and Jon Lay.

Barry Hooper
The numbers of participating golfers joining us at the TRGG keeps getting higher and higher every week. I am fully aware that it is ‘high’ season, but these are the best numbers that we have ever had on a regular basis. I asked many of the new names in our groups just how it was that they came to join us, it is always nice to know how people find you. Many said it was by word of mouth and others the website that seems to have come of age and is working very well in informing possible players.
A note to all players at the TRGG, the courses are getting extremely busy and our entry numbers are going up and up so it is very important to sign up early if you want to play a course that you like which is on our February schedule. (This can be found at www.trgg.biz).
Monday, Feb. 8, Greenwood A&B - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Ted Senior (12) 37pts
2nd R. Freeman (12) 35pts
3rd Steve Carleton (7) 35pts
Div. 2
1st Danny Whelan (14) 41pts
2nd Geoff Beling (17) 34pts
3rd Gerhard Burger (16) 33pts
Div. 3
1st Jack McNamara (21) 37pts
2nd Laurie Bevan (28) 30pts
3rd Kevin Hill (36) 29pts
Monday’s trip was to Greenwood, the course was great and we had a terrific turnout so three very full divisions.
Jock McNamara took division 3 with a quality thirty-seven points, a full seven ahead of his nearest rival which was Laurie Bevan at thirty. In third was Kevin Hill with his twenty- nine.
The second tier saw a win for Danny Whelan with a splendid forty-one points. Second, and again seven back, was Geoff Beling with thirty-four and in third was last week’s man of the week Gerhard Burger at thirty-three.
Ted Senior was the lead man in the premier flight with thirty-seven points. In second was R. Freeman at thirty-five after beating Steve Carlton on the count back.
There was only the one ‘2’ and that came from Danny Whelan at the second hole. He picked up a large pot but being the gentleman that we all know he is he rang the bell for all in attendance at the prize presentation.
Tuesday, Feb. 9, The Emerald – Stableford
Overall Winner
Richard Freeman (12) 41pts
Div. 1
1st Ted Lodge (11) 37pts
2nd Howard Tyler (6) 35pts
3rd Mike Rushant (12) 34pts
Div. 2
1st Mark Reuben (16) 35pts
2nd Neil Allison (17) 33pts
3rd Geoff Beling (17) 32pts
Div. 3
1st Colin Oliver (18) 36pts
2nd Laurie Bevan (29) 32pts
3rd Joe Peters (20) 31pts
Tuesday was a visit to Emerald with over fifty players and once more three divisions. However, it was not a good start to the day when it was found that there were just not enough caddies. But it got worse when we reached the clubhouse to sign in and it also turned out that there were also no buggies available - and if that was not bad enough there was also a shortage of lockers.
After haggling with the staff and management some things were resolved and play eventually got under way. But the irony of the day was when the management asked the organiser why we were not visiting Emerald as often as we used to?
On to the golf and Division 3 saw Colin Oliver heading the list with thirty-six points, followed home by Laurie Bevan at thirty-two and third spot went to Joe Peters with thirty-one after winning the count back over Mike Quill.
Mark Reuben took out the second flight with thirty-five points, while behind him were Neil Allison at thirty-three in second and Geoff Beling taking third with thirty-two.
Ted Lodge was in the top spot in Division 1 with his thirty-seven point haul. Second was Howard Tyler at thirty-five and one back in third was Mike Rushant.
With the numbers being so big it was decided to award an overall winner on the day and that went to Richard Freeman who, playing off twelve, returned a great forty-one points. Good game, good game.
Five ‘2’s on the day came from Phil Battah, Gerhard Burger, David Nash, Ted Senior and Kim Stokes.
Thursday, Feb. 11, Phoenix – Stableford
Overall Winner
Trevor Thorley (14) 39pts
Div. 1
1st Ted Lodge (11) 38pts
2nd Larry Simpson (10) 38pts
3rd Adi Mayer (6) 37pts
Div. 2
1st Gerhard Burger (16) 36pts
2nd Noel Reynolds (15) 35pts
3rd Phil Battah (16) 31pts
Div. 3
1st Kevin Hill (36) 38pts
2nd Laurie Bevan (29) 38pts
3rd Paula Byrne (26) 36pts
Ocean and Mountain at Phoenix was the challenge on and the course was in its usual excellent condition. We had another massive entry list so three divisions plus an overall winner.
The third flight saw a win for Kevin Hill with thirty-eight points ahead of Laurie Bevan on the count back. Paula Byrne was two shots back in third.
Gerhard Burger won Division 2 with an even par thirty-six points (his handicap change does not seem to be slowing him down). Second was Noel Reynolds at thirty-five and Phil Battah came third with thirty-one.
In the top division Ted Lodge was there again to record his second successive win with thirty-eight points ahead of Larry Simpson on count back. Adi Mayer came in third just one point behind.
The overall winner this time was Trevor Thorley with his thirty-nine pointer.
Four ‘2’s were recorded by Gerhard Burger, Phil Battah, Trevor Thorley and Larry Simpson.
Saturday, Feb. 13, Khao Kheow A&B - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Tewin Lamthong (9) 37pts
2nd Mod Chaviraksa (11) 35pts
3rd Jon Lay (8) 30pts
Div. 2
1st Billy Ostle (15) 36pts
2nd Ted Senior (12) 35pts
3rd Kim Stokes (13) 32pts
Div. 3
1st Joe Kowalczyk (17) 35pts
2nd Charlie Cox (17) 34pts
3rd Colin Oliver (18) 32pts
Div. 4
1st Laurinn Brinn (28) 41pts
2nd Paula Byrne (26) 34pts
3rd Kev Hill (35) 29pts
At Khao Kheow on Saturday we were again restricted to an entry of forty players by the course, but the handicaps posted forced the event to four full divisions. No rain this week to mess things about and some very good scores posted.
Visiting lady Laurinn Brinn finished top of Division 4 with the great score of forty-one points. In second was yet another lady, this time Paula Byrne with at thirty-four points and in third was Kev Hill with twenty-nine.
Division 3 saw Colin Oliver in third spot with thirty-two, second went to Charlie Cox with thirty-four, and the winner was Joe Kowalczyk (that name gives me spelling problems every time) with thirty-five points.
The second division had Billy Ostle on top with an even par thirty-six points, followed in by Ted Senior at thirty-five and Kim Stokes in third at thirty-two.
The winner of the premier division was, for the second week in a row, Tewin Lamthong with her thirty-seven points. Playing off nine seems to be no problem for her. In second was Mod Chaviraksa with thirty-five points and third spot went to Jon Lay with thirty.
Only three ‘2’s were recorded, by Ed Brubaker, Tewin Lamthong and Trevor Thorley.

Akester’s admiral ability altogether awesome

PSC golf with the Phoenix Tuesday Group

Mike Gerrard
A reasonably quiet day today with many of our regulars going away on trips etc. so only 3 groups in attendance. But you know what they say. All good things come in small packages! It was another glorious day with high temperatures and a fresh breeze.

Tuesday winner Ken Akester with one of Noy’s helpers.

Ken Akester was the victor today by way of count back on the last 6 holes. With only 33 points it shows that when this course is up to top notch it is no pushover. Edged into second place was the lovable rogue Hugh Byrne, with 3 other players scoring 32 points.
With very little of the spoils left after we had all had our usual first drink free and awarded the technical prizes, it was only the first two who were rewarded.
Near pins went to Hugh Byrne, Roger Ison (2) and John Bartley. The lucky draw went to ‘yours truly’ with the extra free drink from our hosts going to Colin Cronin.
Note: We are now filling up the tee times for the intended charity bash on March 30. We still require more players and sponsors for prizes. This is a plan to help the 75 kids in the local Baan Jing Jai orphanage. They are in desperate need of new drinking water facilities.
The charity game will be at Phoenix on Tuesday, March 30 starting at 10.34am. A two-ball scramble is the format and both men and ladies can sign up in any pairing they wish. Men will be allowed a 28 handicap and ladies 36. A 20% of the combined total will be allowed for the Stableford competition.
Any official handicaps will be accepted: USGA, IPGC CONGU, official overseas, and any other private society handicap that is based on official systems and verifiable online.
The entrance fee will be 600 baht on registration and the respective green fee, caddy fee and cart fee will be payable by the player to Phoenix Golf Club on the day.
There will be a free buffet at Noy’s Bar (Soi Chaiyapreuk) after the game where we will hold the presentation. Hopefully there will be a couple of songs from some of the kids from the orphanage before the presentation of prizes. Your support is needed (for the kids, not anyone else).
For information regarding this event and our weekly golf contact either Mike Gerrard on 087 091 7565 or Bob Neylon on 081 916 1853, or Stuart Gordon on 085 630 7402

Warburton wins by a street at Phoenix

PSC golf from The Bunker Bar

Monday, Feb. 8, Green Valley - Stableford
After more problems with the booking times we eventually teed off around 40 minutes late (high season tourists appear to be given preference over Pattaya Sports Club members who play all year round!) Obviously the round was slow with too many golfers on the course but we soldiered on anyway.

Gary Warburton - winner at Phoenix.

Harry Lankoff, who’s just returned from snow covered Canada, enjoyed being back in the sun by winning the B Flight with 39 points, a point ahead of in-form Laurence Harding, while Mike Corner brought up the rear with a steady 35 points.
Paul Smith won the A Flight with the same number of points, John Graham and Gary Warburton finishing second and third respectively.
A Flight
1st Paul Smith (3) 39pts
2nd John Graham (12) 35pts
3rd Gary Warburton (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Harry Lankoff (25) 39pts
2nd Lawrence Harding (20) 38pts
3rd Mike Corner (21) 35pts
Near Pins: Harry Lankoff, Alan Harris and Paul Smith (2).
Wednesday, Feb. 10, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A large field turned up for this tough but popular course and there were some great scores in the A Flight.
With the cut set unusually high at handicap 18, Geoff Hart was disappointed to find himself in the A Flight, his 36 points would have been enough to win the B Flight but it was only enough to take second place where he beat Paul Smith on a count back. John Graham had another good round winning with 38 points.
The B Flight was decided on a count back, Mike Corner just shading it from Laurence, while PJ did enough to take third spot with 30 points.
A Flight
1st John Graham (12) 38pts
2nd Geoff Hart (18) 36pts
3rd Paul Smith (3) 36pts
B Flight
1st Mike Corner (21) 32pts
2nd Laurence Harding (20) 32pts
3rd PJ Redmond (19) 30pts
Near Pins: Jack Robertson, PJ, and Paul Smith (2).
Friday, Feb. 12, Phoenix - Medal
Phoenix played unusually tough today as the scores reflected, the only exception being Gary Warburton’s five under par round which won the A Flight by a five shot margin. (He must have stayed off the beer!) Tony Scambler had a level par round to take the runner up spot and John Graham playing his last game for a while finished third.
The same three players who won the money at Treasure Hills shared the spoils again in the B Flight, PJ winning this time, beating Mike Corner on a count back and Laurence Harding had to settle for third place.
A Flight
1st Gary Warburton (15) net 67
2nd Tony Scambler (9) net 72
3rd John Graham (12) net 74
B Flight
1st PJ Redmond (19) net 76
2nd Mike Corner (21) net 76
3rd Laurence Harding (20) net 77
Near Pins: Frank Pilkington, ‘Dev’, Laurence and Dave Warburton.

Bridge in Paradise : by Neil Robinson

Last week was a difficult defensive play.  Today it is the turn of declarer.  No one was vulnerable and South dealt.  This was the bidding:

South   West       North     East

P           P              2C           3C

3H        P              4H          All pass

Imagine you are sitting South, with the dummy and hand below.  The opening lead was the queen of clubs.  You have a great dummy and 30 HCP between the two hands.  How do you make the contract?

                     S: AK5

                     H: AQ6

                     D: AQ754

                     C: A8

??                                          ??

                     S: Q10

                     H: 98732

                     D: KJ9

                     C: J107

At the table the ace of clubs won the first trick.  A low spade was led from dummy to the queen in hand.  Declarer finessed in hearts, with the queen losing to East’s king.  East then led the king of clubs and another club.
West ruffed with the jack, forcing the ace of hearts from dummy.  The six of hearts was led and the trick was won by East’s ten, with West discarding.  East now led a low spade, which dummy was forced to win with the king.
You have already lost three tricks (the king and ten of hearts and the king of clubs) and cannot afford to lose any more.  The situation now is shown below.  What do you lead from dummy?

At the table, declarer tried to get to hand by leading a low diamond to his king.  East ruffed and the contract was down.  The correct lead is the ace of spades, which you trump in hand.  It is critically important to get to hand to pull the last trump.  You have plenty of winners in diamonds and do not need the ace of spades, so the correct play is to trump your winning ace!  (If East trumps the spade first, you simply over ruff.)  Now you can pull the last trump with your nine and claim the rest.
Congratulations if you found the right play.  The full deal is shown below:

Gardner doubles up

PSC golf from The Caddyshack

Damian Trant
Monday, Feb 8, The Emerald – Stableford
Not everybody’s favourite Emerald was the venue on Monday, but still over thirty golfers turned out to play. This has to be the only course in this region in which you can hit fourteen fairways in the round and still end up with fourteen dodgy lies. It was its usual dry patchy, untidy self but it’s one of them courses that you either love or hate.
The field was split into two with the better scores easily coming from the higher handicappers. In A Flight there were quite a few who scored 33 points but it was Dave Hester who scored the second best back nine, giving him third place. John O’Flynn scored the best back nine out of everybody on 33 points and this put him in second. Two shots better on 35 points was Ted ‘two handicaps’ Gardner, giving him his first victory for quite awhile.
In B Flight a level par round of 36 points by Dave Strang put him in third place. One shot better and proving golf lessons do work was Doug Carysforth with a very impressive 37 points. But just edging it with a very nice 38 points was Keith Johnson. Well done to Keith, always seems to enjoy his day out at Emerald.
A Flight
1st Ted Gardner 35pts
2nd John O.Flynn 33pts
3rd Dave Hester 33pts
B Flight
1st Keith Johnson 38pts
2nd Doug Carysforth 37pts
3rd Dave Strang 36pts
Wednesday, Feb. 10, Greenwood – Medal
Let it be known that Greenwood is back to its best. After months of mediocrity it is now playing superbly, perfect fairways and super slick, beautiful greens. It was also another medal round and this being the second time we have played this format in the past month, it could be said that medals are becoming quite a habit at the Caddy Shack.
With the course at its best and conditions perfect for golf it’s not surprising that with no excuses, the scores were absolutely dreadful. Only one person in a field of over twenty golfers played to his handicap and that’s because he’s a ‘crook’ who should be off at least two or three less.
In B Flight a net 79 from Derek Wilkin, that must have seen clubs thrown everywhere, was surprisingly good enough to take third place. In second place was the ever improving Derek Mower with a score of net 77, which was nearly good enough to win. I say nearly because Dave Strang the biggest ‘crook’ in the Caddy Shack when it comes to handicaps, had an off day but still managed to take first place because of a better back nine.
In A Flight the scores were slightly better, but that wouldn’t have been difficult would it. Clive Bruce and Mark Williams fought over the scraps of second and third after both posting net 74’s, with Mark coming out on top after a back nine count back. Then to the winner, the only person to play to his handicap and scoring a level par 72 net was the very popular Paul Walia.
A Flight
1st Paul Walia net 72
2nd Mark Williams net 744
3rd Clive Bruce net 74
B Flight
1st Dave Strang net 77
2nd Derek Mower net 77
3rd Derek Wilkin net 79
Friday, Feb. 12, Green Valley - Stableford
With the first ever Caddy Shack ‘golfer of the month’ award reaching its half stage, the serial podium placers were out in force at Green Valley.
Before going into this round Dave Strang and Derek Wilkin had quite a lead on the rest of the field and after their performances today they only strengthened their places in the race for the award. High scores and good performances had to be the order of the day but it didn’t really turn out like that, with the scores mainly disappointing.
In B Flight Dave Strang scored a distinctly average 34 points, which was good enough for third place. One point better off in second was Dave’s Speedy playing partner Ramsey ‘the rice man’ Smith, with top spot in B Flight going to Fridays favourite winner Derek Wilkin. Derek has put some really impressive displays together this month and it’s just a matter of time before he gets himself a handicap that his swing deserves.
In A Flight it was a very tight affair with only one point separating the top three. After Wednesday’s battle for the scraps of second and third involving Mark Williams and Clive Bruce, it was almost same again. This time though it was Clive that had the better back nine, reversing the places of Wednesday. Ted ‘two handicaps’ Gardner was the only golfer on the day to better his handicap and with his 37 points and this was just about good enough to give him first place.
A Flight
1st Ted Gardner 37pts
2nd Clive Bruce 36ptss
3rd Mark Williams 36pts
B Flight
1st Derek Wilkin 36pts
2nd Ramsay Smith 35ptss
3rd Dave Strang 34pts

What a week for the scribes

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s top four: Mashi Kenata, Bill Knight,
Thomas Cotton and Steve Hamstad.

Thomas Cotton & Derek Brook
Tuesday, Feb. 9, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Your correspondent was panting with excitement at the prospect of playing at Khao Kheow, a course which seems to give so many golfers problems. The scores are almost always low there and rare it is for somebody to play to his handicap off the yellow tees. But don’t ask me why, golf is still a mystery.
We had a good turnout and even Steve Hamstad, who almost always gives KK a miss, participated. Several of the Welsh bandits didn’t show, which really was opening the door to the usual bandits. Mashi in particular, was quite intoxicated with his chances this day and felt he had chosen his playing partner, our Captain, very well. Alas, Mashi’s luck with the Captain had finally run out, even though he played well and he finished second in his flight, because Mashi was up against the only golfer to reach his handicap this day. He, who shall remain nameless, was treated by Mashi to a cup of Japanese green tea back at Tropical Bert’s.
Kevin Dunn meanwhile missed a hole-in-one by only 2 inches.
A Flight (0-16)
1st Steve Hamstad 33pts
2nd Mashi Kenata 33pts
3rd Richard Kubicki 31pts
B Flight (17 & up)
1st Thomas Cotton 39pts
2nd Bill Knight 33pts
3rd Don Carmody 30pts
Near Pins: Kevin Dunn, Richard Kubicki, TC
Long Putts: Nigel Perry, Doug Maiko
Friday, Feb. 12, Treasure Hill - Stableford
There we were on the eve of the eve of “The Year of the Tiger” and wouldn’t you know it, there was a tiger prowling the local hills, Treasure Hill that is. With a good number of regulars and new-comers signed up, it looked to be a good turnout. However, with sick calls and reported injuries, 14 departed Tropical Bert’s for this venue that is becoming a regular on our booking list.
Check-in was quick and efficient as there were few players at the course and our groups were off without delay.
The course proved to be in great shape with greens running true, even with a few tricky pin placements, and not much over watering of the fairways. Bit too much sand in the bunkers, but then I guess that is why they call them hazards.
All groups completed their round in about 4 hours which was great and with scorecards confirmed and submitted, all were soon headed back to Pattaya.
Back at Bert’s the scores were tabulated and the prizes sorted out. It turned out that the ‘Tiger’, previously noted, was none other than your writer, Derek Brook, who mastered the course on this day, beating out the nearest competition by 7 points. Just maybe his handicap will come down a bit next week?
1st Derek Brook (15) 40pts
2nd Nigel Perry (22) 33pts
3rd Walter Baechli (17) 33pts
Near Pins: Per Andersen, Derek Brook, Don Carmody, Kevin Dunne.

Brian celebrates his 60th in style

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, Feb. 8, Pattana A & B - Stableford
1st Brian Beaupre 42pts
2nd Russell Exley 42pts
3rd Roar Berger 41pts
4th Yasuo Suzuki 41pts
5th Ole Stamnes 36pts
6th Stuart Thompson 36pts
Organising golf in the Pattaya area can sometimes be a little frustrating as the best efforts are quite often stymied by the various course’s greens staff. Well this was one of those days, as playing A and B at Pattana, it was considered that the day’s play should be from the yellow tees with a par of 73 and a SS of 72, which was where it stayed after the calculation of the CSS.
In the event, apart from the opening hole, all the yellow tees had been moved forward to their very shortest positions, allowing the par 5’s to be easily reached by the lower handicaps with a drive and an 8 iron and the par 6 reduced to a medium length par 5 capable of being reached in two shots. This all made for some spectacular scoring by a few of the contestants, especially Brian Beaupre, who was celebrating his sixtieth Birthday, and he made it a double reason for being memorable with a gross 72 off his five handicap, which was just about good enough to beat Russell Exley on count back, 22 to 19. Russell was not too disappointed as he recorded his lifetime best two over gross, to equal a similar feat of his at St Andrews last year.
Roar Berger also took full advantage of the short length to record his best score for some time and secure third place with a better count back of 20 to 18, which denied Yasuo Suzuki what he thought would be a bonanza return to Thailand as he also slipped in a ‘2’ in the round.
Ole Stamnes and Stuart Thompson needed a count back to decide that Ole took fifth place with an 18 to 17 result in his favour.
Surprisingly, with the course playing so short, there were only two 2’s on the day, one in the first division dropped in by Yasuo Suzuki, which made up somewhat for the huge disappointment of scoring 41 points for just fourth place, and one in the second division by Roland Ellis.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new member Roland Ellis and also welcomed back Frijof and Marianne Kayser, Yasuo Suzuki and Kevin Townsend.
Wednesday, Feb 10, Bangpra - Stableford
1st Bob Lamond 36pts
2nd Peter Sumner 36pts
3rd Frank Hughes 35pts
4th Barrie Howarth 35pts
5th Chris Knapp 35pts
6th Shuichi Kodaka 34pts
After the easy day out previously, it was back to reality with a jolt at Bangpra. Although not up to its usual difficulty rating, with the greens almost slow by their normal standards following the recent wet weather and the inability of the greens staff to cut them to their normal height, it still proved to be a serious test although the CSS stayed at 72 for the day.
Bob Lamond had one of his super steady days to take the top honours ahead of Peter Sumner, as he recorded a better count back of 18 when Peter slumped to a 15 back nine after a splendid 21 going out.
Frank Hughes led in a group one shot behind them, winning the count back over the last six with an excellent 14 points to claim third spot as Barrie Howarth with 13, and Chris Knapp with 12 took fourth and fifth respectively after they had all played the back nine scoring 17 points each.
Not surprisingly there were no 2’s today as all the par threes tees had been set at their longest distances.
Back at The Haven Danny Greer was welcomed back from the snow bound northern hemisphere.
Friday, Feb. 12, Khao Kheow - Stableford
1st Frank Hughes 33pts
2nd Kazuo Takimoto 32pts
3rd Alan Hanlon 31pts
4th Tomoyasu Ishisaki 31pts
A days golf at Khao Kheow off the yellow tees is always a stern test and this time, following the two earlier outings, a few of the hopefuls were not quite prepared sufficiently to match the day’s requirements as the CSS slipped out to 75 and the event became non-counting for upward review. Just getting around seemed to be an achievement for some!
Indeed Frank Hughes was a very surprised winner as he ambled back to The Haven to find that he had not only won but had already bought everyone a drink to celebrate with a score that he thought would have little chance of securing a prize.
Kazuo Takimoto was also of the same opinion with his four over handicap return and did not even attend for his drink, much to Frank’s delight. With Alan Hanlon winning a very unlikely count back by a margin of 10 to 8 over Tomoyasu Ishisaki, who’s first visit the Soi 13 left him with the impression that things are a tad easier in Pattaya than back home, as he tied up fourth place. There were a slew of six more players on 30 points but they will no doubt be pleased for anonymity even though they were well inside the top 25% of the day’s results.
In spite of having exactly half of the field in the first division for the 2’s competition, there were none put away so that unusually there will be a triple roll over to start next weeks events. But there were two 2’s in the second division, one by Roar Berger and one by Shuichi Kodaka.
Before the presentations Nobutaka Yamaguchi, Tomoyasu Ishisaki and Michael Oates were welcomed as new members and Allan Duffy was welcomed back. There was also a farewell to Barrie Howarth returning to Blighty to help with snow clearing in his local area.
Although, apart from his ‘2’, Shuichi Kodaka did not make the sparks fly on the course, he certainly made up for it in the changing rooms after showering, when an excessively lively hairdryer exploded whilst he was finishing his hair styling, burning two fingers. The management quickly made amends by escorting him to the hospital of his choice in Pattaya, The Memorial, and settling the bill for the day and signing for all future follow up treatment. It would appear that with this instance and last weeks management response to Derek Holt’s ill health, that at least some of the courses are taking customer service a little more seriously than in the past.

Yves blazes a trail at Rayong Country Club

PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, Feb. 9, Rayong C.C. - Stableford
Tuesday saw our group head off to Rayong C.C. to do battle against the course, the elements, and any other obstacles encountered throughout the day. Well the elements looked after us, with clear, sunny skies and a light, maybe 1 club breeze, to keep the effects of the sun down a bit. The course remains in good condition, despite the recent dry spell, although some of the fairways are helping with the driving distance stats.

Tuesday winners Monte Sykes (left) & Yves Philibert (right) with ML landlord Ray.

To the golf, Yves Philibert (27) made a mockery of the course and his fellow competitors, recording a fine 44 points to secure first in the B flight (21+ today), to lead the next best score in by 8 points. In second place was Mike Pledger (22) with a creditable 36 points, while Paul Jefferies (23) with 35 secured the bronze medal position.
The A Flight was a little closer, with Monte Sykes (5) playing some steady golf to register 36 points, followed home by Terry Phur (17) with 35, while Jeff Wylie (5) played inconsistently to record 33 points for third spot.
The near pins were shared amongst Jeff, Monte & Paul Jefferies.
Thursday, Feb. 11, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Thursday, and we were up the Highway 7 to pit our skills against one of the best tests in the area, Khao Kheow, with the A & B combination (Yellow tees) our challenge today. Again, clear skies were the order of the day, so no excuses accepted, with just a light breeze blowing across the fairways.
Two flights again today, with the divisions being 0 -17 & 18+, with the usual 4 NTPs, to reward those good shots on each of the Par 3s.
No outlandish scores at this venue, with 36 points leading the way in both flights, although in the B, a count back of the last 3 holes was required before settling on a victor. That was Mike Pledger (22) who just edged Stefan Hoge (18) after both went 18 the back 9 & 12 the last 6, with Mike getting the last 3 holes 9 to 7. The low step on the podium went to Tony Chetland (18) with a solidly compiled 34 points.
The A Flight required no count backs, with Jeff Wylie (5) scoring 36 points to lead the way home, closely followed by Romao Cerejo (10) with 35 and Graham Johnson (6) with 34.
The technical prizes were spread around between Andy, Jeff, Graham and Romao.
All those golfers who enjoy a good day of golf, followed by a great evening of food & festivities, keep March 17 clear in your calendar, as Mulligans Lakeside will be hosting a St Patrick’s Day tournament. A day & night not to miss, with great prizes followed by great entertainment.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc, please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Was this what we had been waiting for?

Sea Fishing with the PSC

Mike Gerrard
Avast ye old see dogs! With the old and new year festivities out of the way it was almost a full crew (one got lost on the way) on a beautiful cloudless day at Bangsaray. The boat was ready with live, (and dead) bait. Mind you at this time of the morning most of the passengers seemed like the dead bait (especially me).

Rod bent nearly double, Colin battles to land the rock fish.
So we cast off a little late, but were soon able to pick up the lost time with this boat. What a sweet sounding engine (and fast).
Once in the fishing grounds where the big ones are (?) we all soon dosed off, waiting for the screaming of the reels. And so we slept, and we slept until it seemed it was not going to be our day. I think the fish were sleeping as well.
Just as the skipper said let’s move, Colin Wood’s rod bent over in two. For the next 30 minutes Colin fought like a galley slave to raise the catch. The odds were on a huge stingray, such was the lack of fight. If you’ve never caught a large stingray, I will explain. It is like trying to raise a huge bag of wet cement.

The skipper holds up part of Colin’s catch.
Well would you believe it, that’s exactly what it was: a record rock fish. The photo shows only half of it. As the skipper unattached the hook he threw as much away as is depicted in the photo. Poor Colin, he was wringing wet with sweat and totally knackered. But we got the photo.
Sadly the rest of the day ended up fruitless as far as large fish were concerned, but as always we never come back empty handed. Many fish such as pladang, snapper and the like were bagged and after being cleaned and gutted they were transported to their respective freezers. My share had been promised to the girls who work in the PSC office, and well pleased they were when they received them on Monday morning.
The best catch of the day went to Mr. J.P. from Finland, about a 2 kilo snapper.
Such was the pleasantness of the day that all of the passengers were quite happy to stay till it became dusk before we called it a day. Back on terra firma we all went our way with plenty of small, good eating fish and many extra red faces. Not from embarrassment, but the strength of the sun and the sea air.
The next scheduled trip is on Feb 20 and thereafter every third Saturday of the month. Contact me (Mike) as soon as you can, the scheduled trips are almost full with regulars who like to go out every month. Failing that you can charter the boat any day of the week. Go to our website at pattayasports.org and click on the “Fishing”. Everything you need to know is there.
All fees are payable on registration at the PSC clubhouse, in advance. Failing that for further information, call me on 087 091 7565.
Keep you hooks sharp!
