Students go to Naklua to watch the (sea) grass grow
Kasem Chimjiew, principal of
Pattaya School #2, and Wannaporn Chancharat, director of the Pattaya Public
Health and Environment Department help the students plant sea grass at
Naklua.
Sawittree Namwiwatsuk
In an effort to shore up Pattaya’s marine environment, more than 100
city students took to Naklua Bay to plant sea grass.
Sponsored by the Pattaya Public Health and Environment Department, the
project brought children from Pattaya School #2 to the beach July 23 to lay
down 4,000 Enhalus acoroides (L.f.) Royle seedlings.
Wannaporn Chancharat, director of the Pattaya Public Health and Environment
Department, said Naklua Beach was chosen because it is not overrun with
water sports and is a prime target for preservation.
The sea grass, she said, offers food for crabs and shrimp, but also helps
protect against erosion. However, she noted, the area needs protection from
fishing until the plants take root.
These youngsters are certainly
having a good time
whilst planting sea grass to restore the coastal ecology.
Asian University awarded
Quality Standard Certification
Susan Joyce
As a result of a two day visit by an assessment team led by
Prof. Dr. Wichit Srisa-an in June, Asian University has officially met
the conditions of certification by ONESQA (the Office for National
Education Standards and Quality Assessment) according to the Manual for
External Quality Assessment of Higher Education and received ONESQA
Quality Standard Certification at both the institutional level and at
the disciplinary group (each Faculty) levels.
Prof
Dr Wichit Srisa-an addresses Asian University.
In summary, Asian University has been certified as “Good” overall,
including the Quality of the Graduates, and “excellent” in Academic
Services which was the category in which we positioned ourselves.
During the visit the QA team interviewed council members, university
staff, students and graduates as well as studying numerous academic
documents and facilities.
The final report commends the University as an international university
using English language as the medium of instruction; for having in place
several agreements with overseas universities; and the appropriateness
of the buildings and facilities for the present and near future.
Everyone at Asian University is delighted that they have been seen to
have met the stringent requirements by an external team of experts. Of
course this is not a one-off, and taking account of the recommendations
made by the team, staff and students alike will continue the process of
quality improvement.

Walk rally aims to prevent teen traffic accidents
Vimolrat Singnikorn
Thailand’s roads are dangerous places but city officials believe
if children learn early to protect themselves the streets could one day
become safer.
Lt.
Cmdr. Pitak Thongsuk of Queen Sirikit Hospital’s Navy Medical Unit talks
about the dangers of reckless driving.
The city took another step toward educating its youth July 28 when
Deputy Mayor Verawat Khakhay presided over a twice-annual walk rally for
junior high school students at the Pattaya Redemptorist Foundation. More
than 100 teens took part in the event aimed at highlighting the perils
of reckless road behavior.
Lt. Cmdr. Pitak Thongsuk of Queen Sirikit Hospital told the youngsters
that traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death for young
Thais even though many could be prevented by such measures as always
wearing helmets while riding motorbikes.
Deputy
Mayor Verawat Khakhay opens the Walk Rally Traffic Accident Prevention
event.
More than 12,000 Thais die and nearly 16,000 are injured each year in
traffic-related incidents, Pitak said, noting most victims are younger
than 35. Not only is that a personal tragedy, he said, but it places a
large burden on society, with care for a person disabled in an accident
costing the state more than 4.6 million baht.
Verawat said walk rallies like these are especially important in
reducing accidents as junior high students are still immature. However,
if they can be taught proper discipline, lives can be saved. In addition
to rallies, he noted, the city also produces brochures, institutes
checkpoints and takes other measures to reduce accidents.
Students from Pattaya City
School #5 attend the rally.

and association members at Pattaya City Hall July 31.
