Lewis Underwood

Our chief means of raising funds for children-targeted charities is through corporate and individual sponsorship. Last year this accounted for over 3 million of the 5.4 million we ultimately raised. And though there is never a donation too small (it all helps), we are very grateful for our 100,000 baht Platinum Sponsors. As a token of our appreciation we would like to tell you a little about the 20 Platinum Sponsors on board so far.

Baltex Industries Corp Ltd: Ualie and Christoph Balzli from Switzerland have been producing our events shirts since 2000. Though they provide a wide range of diverse products, their specialty for us is a thin cotton/synthetic shirt ideal for the tropics. They have been Platinum Sponsors since 2003.

The Classroom: Peter Stonebridge has been a Platinum Sponsor for the last 2 years, donating the proceeds of the Classroom Charity Golf Classic. Peter has guaranteed a minimum donation of 100,000 baht each year, and last year donated 120,000 baht.

Club Nevada: This small club has come up big and now has gone Platinum for two consecutive years.

The Diamond Shop: Dave Pittman decided to go Platinum this year by donating valuable diamond and gold jewelry for the Jesters Pub Night auction. The Diamond shop is now located on the west side of Pattaya 3 Road, just north of the CS Loxinfo office.

EK Crane Logistics: This company, located in Rayong, joined us this year and immediately went Platinum. Big thanks to Ian Harrington for getting them on board.

Herrod Foundation: This is a private non-profit organization registered in Switzerland, that makes donations entirely from its own resources. Support is given to smaller charities and NGO’s that assist suffering children in Asia. Recently, Michael Jones from HF visited us and took an interest in some of our prospective projects, particularly Ban Jing Jai. Their donation this year is $US 5000.

Jameson’s Irish Pub: Owned by Rony Fineman of the Nova Group and Landlord Kim Fletcher, Jameson’s is the venue for the Jesters Pub Night on September 16th. The 2005 auction held there was our most successful to date. Jameson’s is located on in front of the Nova Park Hotel, on Soi 4 off Pattaya 2 Road in North Pattaya.

Laem Chabang International Terminal: LCIT provides container terminal services to container ship operators. Chris Langford joined us in 2002 as a Gold Sponsor and has now been a Platinum Sponsor for the last 3 years.

MBMG International: This company has provided financial expertise throughout Asia on a wide range of corporate and personal issues since 1995. Its chairman, Graham Macdonald, is also a member of our organizing committee, with special responsibility for corporate sponsorship and securing airline prizes for the Pub Night grand raffle. A valued Platinum sponsor since 2002.

Mike Koerner: An ex-Marine, specializing in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), has been a sponsor since 2004 and a Platinum sponsor for the last two years.

Nagas MC: Based in Sriracha, this motorcycle club is the first one to go Platinum. Last year they essentially did composite Platinum through their associated companies, including Promech Resources, Logans Thailand Co. and EBRO Armaturen as well as Nagas MC.

Nirvana Resorts: Our liaison is through Richard Rhodes and they have been Platinum for the last 4 years. They have an eco friendly hotel in Koh Chang, 30 residential apartments in Jomtien Beach on Soi 4, and a condo of 58 units soon to open at the top of Thappraya Road, where the Mata Hari opened recently, and soon to be joined by the Manhattan Steak House.

Northern Thai Group: A conglomerate of companies specializing in realty and insurance are located on Pattaya 2 Road in South Pattaya opposite the Royal Garden Plaza. Jack Levy and John Seymour joined us in 2005 as a Silver Sponsor, but decided to go Platinum this year.

Quayside Wharehousing (Pty) Ltd, South Africa: Capt. Steve Ponter joined our organizing committee this year and immediately went to work garnering corporate sponsors. As Steve said about this company, “These are close friends of mine who jumped at the opportunity to help and will definitely be long term sponsors going forward.”

Pattaya Mail Media Group: Peter Malhotra and company have been Platinum Sponsors since 2003, but even more significantly have supported us since our inception in 1998. Without the extensive exposure in the Pattaya Mail and televised interviews and coverage of our charity work and events on PMTV (now broadcast daily on 4 cable channel networks), we would not have been able to be as successful in raising so much money for the kids. Pattaya Mail Publishing also prints our event posters, flyers and fair souvenir programs.

Pattaya Sports Club: Presently under the tutelage of President Gerry Carpenter and Charity Chairman Bernie Tuppin, the PSC has been involved with us since 2001 and has been Platinum since 2003. In addition they have donated 25,000 baht for Jesters Children’s Fair raffle prizes for the last 3 years.

SJ Lake Consulting Services: Steve Lake, a fellow Harley Davidson rider, has been working around Asia and has been a Platinum Sponsor for the last 3 years, vowing to be a perennial one.

Unilever (x 2): This company is the largest fast moving consumer goods manufacturer in Thailand. At the helm is Caroline Stockmann who approved a donation of 200,000 baht which has gone to support an orphan from the tsunami for the next two years through the Sriphong Phukaoluan Foundation in Krabi.

Wood Group: Located in Maptaphut, the Wood Group provides service for industrial gas and steam turbine-generator maintenance to power utilities. Tony Beardsley became interested in ‘Care for Kids’ through our involvement in the renovation of school buildings at the Eastern Child Welfare Protection Institute in Huay Pong, Maptaphut (Rayong). As a result the Wood Group has been a Platinum Sponsor for the last 3 years.

POV Media Group. Our 20th Platinum sponsor in 2006 and Bangkok based, the Point of View Media Group offers Thailand’s largest network of indoor advertising billboards and wraps with over 2000 facings in prime locations. CEO John Stevens came on board in 2005 with free media display space for our event poster at the Platinum sponsor level. That support continues in 2006, enabling the Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive to reach an even wider audience beyond the Eastern Seaboard.

All Platinum Sponsors have their logos featured on the back of our event T-shirts, a free full page color advertisement in the fair souvenir program, names on all banners at our Children’s Fair and Pub Night, and frequent exposure in our public relations program via press, television and display activity.

If you are interested in becoming a Platinum Sponsor, or supporting Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ at the Gold, Silver, or Bronze sponsorship level, please visit our website at www.care4kids. info or email us at jesterscd @care4kids.info.

If not before, we hope to see you at the Jesters Children’s Fair on Sunday, September 10th at the Diana Garden Resort and Driving Range and/or the Jesters Pub Night on the following Saturday, September 16th at Jameson’s, the Irish Pub.

Web sites help students looking to study in USA

As students in today’s world, we know that competition in the job market is getting tougher each day. We attend university in order to achieve aspirations of parking expensive cars in our driveway, spending an early retirement at the beach, and affording a comfortable lifestyle for our families. While these goals are attainable, the chances of every college graduate having a lifestyle like the one mentioned above is slim. Although the international job market is growing, it cannot afford to grant a lucrative job to every college grad who has a degree in the field. Because of this reality, we students need to make ourselves more marketable to our future employees.
While earning good grades, being involved in worthwhile extracurricular activities, and having internships can usher us toward successful careers, studying in a foreign country can give students a sense of worldliness. Thai students in particular recognize the advantages of studying abroad: Thailand is the tenth-leading country in the world sending foreign students to the United States to study.
Aside from the fact that the United States is one of the world’s economic engines, a U.S. education is top-quality and offers many valuable experiences for non-U.S. students. Since the US is such a large and technologically advancing nation, you have many options to enroll in a university that is first-class in practically any field of study.
Because of its size, the U.S. can seem overwhelming when a student is trying to find the perfect place to study. The U.S. Journal of Academics can help. The multi-lingual suite of sites matches non-U.S. students to quality American universities that feature the desired activities and academic level of the student. By browsing the websites, www.usjournal.com (English) or www.USAcademics-th.com (Thai), international students can choose the perfect match for their academic needs easily and efficiently.
Because of the relatively large numbers of Thai students that have studied in the USA, prospective students can often connect with current Thai students at the U.S. university to feel more at home when they arrive on campus. Many U.S. campuses now offer the option to connect Thai students early in the admissions process.
As the world’s premier education destination, the United States and the American way of life can offer a lot to an international student’s perspective. Time spent in the U.S. can offer Thai students a unique experience that can help their future careers. A Japanese student from Pittsburg State University in Kansas said, “The professors at PSU are very nice and open. They teach well in class. I like the low student-faculty ratio. In addition to that, PSU is a nice place to be because there are so many international students from so many countries. I have the opportunity to understand and appreciate other cultures. The international friendly environment encourages me to share my own culture as well.”

Musical youngsters pay tribute to HM the King

Students offer gifts to the Brothers of Assumption College Sriracha during the ‘Wai Kru’ ceremony’.

Students at Assumption College Sriracha have paid a musical tribute to His Majesty to the King, in the form of an array of songs presented at a health park in Sriracha.

An Assumption student joins in the musical tribute to HM the King.
All the students practised hard before their performance, which was held to mark the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s succession to the throne. Their dedication paid off as many members of the public stayed to listen to the songs.
Teachers at Assumption will wear specially-designed yellow T-shirts every Monday throughout the year to celebrate the reign of the world’s longest-serving monarch.
Students also gave thanks to their teachers during a special service at Assumption. The Wai Kru service is held every year to honour teachers at Assumption. This year the ACS band played a variety of songs and students listened to a speech from Brother Director Surasit Sukchai.
Assumption College Sriracha educates more than 4,000 students, many of whom come from Pattaya. For more details visit www.acs.ac.th

Sikh community donate blood and present learning enhancement toys to health centre

The Thai-Sikh Community of Pattaya, headed by Amrik Singh Kalra, donated learning enhancement toys to the Public Health and Environment Department on Soi Buakhao on June 6, with Deputy Mayor Verawat Khakhay receiving the presentation on behalf of Pattaya City.
Mr. Amrik Singh said that the donations were made to pay homage to HM the King on the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne. Many Sikhs also took the opportunity to donate blood to the Somdet Memorial Hospital in Sriracha, who had set up a mobile receiving unit at the centre.
Mrs Kanda Nawong, head of the Health Support Bureau said that the learning enhancement toys are for the use of children who come in for treatment. She said that most of the children are in a state of agitation over their sicknesses and are frightened at the prospect of being examined by doctors and nurses. Having a constructive way of diverting their minds from anxiety would be beneficial to the children and to the healthcare officials.
The Health Support Bureau cooperated with Somdet Memorial Hospital in Sriracha to suggest suitable items for the donation.

The Thai-Sikh Community of Pattaya present learning enhancement toys to the Public Health and Environment Department in Pattaya City.
