Club of Jomtien Pattaya and PILC work together
to support 763 school children in Ban Chang
Assisted by sponsorships of the Pattaya Mail PC Classic Royal Cliff Beach Resort International Regatta 2006

PILC welfare Chairperson
A couple of months ago the PILC welfare team visited 12 local primary and
secondary schools in the Ban Chang area. Ban Chang is a smaller town, 40 min
from Pattaya.
The reason for these visits was an attempt to map all the schools conditions
and to find out if any of the children needed support with a uniform, pair
of shoes or a school bag. As you might know school uniforms/shoes are
required for all children when attending school.
It
was quite a logistics challenge to hand out all the uniforms and shoes.
We found out that the schools generally were in pretty good condition. Only
a few needed a renovation, but at all schools there were groups of children
who needed support for the school uniforms and shoes. Each school was then
asked to make a list with names and needs and off we went shopping big time.
It takes up a lot of space with cloths and shoes for so many children, I can
tell you, and it is not easy to get everything organised for the day of
delivery, making sure that each child receives the correct items.
It was a bit messed up on the first day, but everybody
took it in a good sprit and hopefully all worked out in the end. To make it
possible the school uniforms and shoes were handed out on 3 different days
to 3 different areas in Ban Chang.
It was a great joy to see all the smiling faces of the 763 children who
could leave the school on those days with new uniforms and shoes.
The project was supported by the Jomtien Pattaya Rotary Club, with funds
coming from sponsors of the Pattaya Mail PC Classic Royal Cliff Beach Resort
International Regatta 2006, and by the PILC with funds coming from the
yearly holiday bazaar and the gala ball. This year the PILC holiday bazaar
will take place on the 7th of October at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort with
the aim of raising more funds to support children in need.
The children were very happy,
and very thankful to receive such a great gift.

Asian U graduands celebrate in Pattaya
Some of the graduating young men.

On Saturday May 6, Asian U students turned out in their finery for their
annual Bye Nior evening. (Short for good-bye seniors). As usual, this
year’s third year students organized the event for the fourth years.
About 150 students and staff celebrated at the A-One Cruise Hotel. The
theme of the evening was a fairytale evening, and there was an election
for the Prince and Princess of the graduands. The winners were Princess
Pui (Nattapmon Sartsatit, soon to be BA) and Prince Teang (Adull
Kilenthong, soon to be BBA). The university choir entertained everyone
and then the third year students gave teddy-bear mementos to all the
fourth year students who are leaving for “the real world”.
The sports director, James Saville, presented Sporting Excellence awards
to four special students. The awards are for showing and sharing their
sporting excellence throughout their time at Asian U. The football team
captain, Land (Pongsakorn Rojkasemsatit) and the basketball team
captain, Teang (Adull Kilenthong) both received awards. These two young
men are about to graduate with Business Administration degrees after
four or five years of hard work and plenty of sporting enthusiasm. The
other awards were to two of last year’s graduates: Baz (Jirabhon
Sanguanpuak) and Yeen (Thanapati Sriwipat) both of whom were star
basketball players at Asian U.
Asian U, a small university, has been able to play against teams from
the big universities in Thailand, and, thanks to the enthusiasm of the
students, has come away with gold, silver and bronze medals on many
occasions. James also took the opportunity to announce that one of our
first year business students, Mink (Sinsupa Wannasuth), having already
won a bronze medal for sailing at the SEA games, is to go to the
Olympics in Beijing in 2008, as a judge. Asian U is very proud of her.
More information about Asian U and the courses available can be found on
