The International School of the Regents Celebrates in Grand Style!

Loy Krathong, that most colourful of celebrations, was celebrated in style at the International School of the Regents. The efforts of students, teachers and parents combined to ensure that the event was one that would be remembered for a long time to come.

Loy Krathong here I come! Amber, from the ISR’s Pre-nursery group, gets into the swing of things!

The day began with the Foundation Years, along with Pre-Nursery and Key Stage one pupils looking beautiful in their traditional costumes; resplendent in the morning sunshine, the youngsters made their way to the ISR Roundhouse auditorium where each made a short presentation in front of proud parents and teachers.

During the afternoon, the older primary pupils formed a colourful procession, led by their very own long drum band, to the Roundhouse where they enjoyed authentic Thai dancing, a Noppamas contest and the singing of the Loy Krathong song; then, like their younger counterparts earlier, it was down to the swimming pool to float krathongs.

Year 6 pupils Janine and Ivie performing a traditional Thai dance.

The Secondary School celebration took place in the evening and once again the costumes, both boys and girls’, were absolutely fabulous. During the course of events the four houses of the school - Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Thonburi and Krung Thep - showed a competitive spirit, with each house vying with the others to produce the best fruit carving, the most delicious somtan, the most impressively choreographed dance and the most skillfully crafted krathong.

Looking smashing, looking dashing! Year 11 students Apple and Jack take part in the Noppamas contest.

The nighttime setting made the floating of the krathongs a spectacular sight, while a fireworks display brought an end to what had been a most wonderful day.

After the final firework had fizzled the night belonged to the krathong, which was left, along with a cargo of wishes, to add its light to that of the brilliant full moon.

Primary Sports Day at the International School of the Regents

Ian looks on as Year 6 classmate Sao prepares to launch a softball.

After having been postponed once due to rain, the ISR Primary Sports Day took place recently under a blue sky and with the sports fields looking resplendent in the glorious sunshine. Years 1, 2 and 3 spent the morning negotiating an obstacle course, 3-legged racing and bean bag throwing, to name but a few of the events. It was a lot of fun to see parents and teachers getting involved in the sack race as a final event!

ISR pupils spur on their classmates with a ‘Mexican wave’!

During the course of the afternoon, years 4, 5 and 6 showed great skill in traditional athletic events such as long jump, high jump and 400 metres, with many excellent performances being turned in.

GIS visits an art seminar in Bangkok

This past October, a selection of students from Garden International attended an art workshop at Bangkok Patana School. GIS’ arts department shares a close relationship with Patana, from which our students benefit greatly as they are given the opportunity to attend seminars held in Bangkok on art, as well as Patana’s annual IB student art exhibition. The workshop focused primarily on the work of Thai artist, Nawin Biadklang, who is currently completing his Master’s degree in Fine Arts and who is also a guest lecturer on painting at Silpakorn University.

Senior art students from G.I.S. visited the Patana School in Bangkok.

After viewing some of his oil works, our students were then invited to attend a slide presentation and discussion on his work. This was conducted in Thai, with translation also into English. This was then followed by a question and answer session, during which our students were able to probe further into the artist’s choice of subject matter. His current work focuses on exploring the human psyche, and as can be imagined this is a very deep and obviously personal theme to deal with. His discussion gave a valuable insight into the motivation behind his works and our students were amazed at the level of commitment that these displayed. We were very fortunate to attend the workshop, and it proved an extremely valuable experience for our students.

Environment Club

What type of leaf is that? I wonder who did that ancient cave painting? What sort of bird has long legs, white plumage and a long beak? Don’t know? Well you only have to ask any member of the St Andrews Environment Club to get an answer to these questions and more!

What a cave painting

The Environment Club meets every Monday afternoon from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. The club is involved in activities such as bird watching, “cave” painting, photo “treasure” hunts, leaf rubbings and generally getting out and enjoying the beautiful, natural surroundings of the school.

As Thailand enters into a new climatic season the students at St Andrews International School look forward to another exciting term in the Environment Club.
