The Bard pays a visit to ISR!

‘O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?’ - words that begin one of Shakespeare’s best known scenes resounded around a packed auditorium at the ISR recently when actor Daniel Foley dropped in for a day of performance and workshops.

Mr Foley is a well known Shakespearian specialist who has performed in fifty countries worldwide; his one-man shows ‘Shakespeare’s Kings and Clowns’ and ‘Greatest Hits of Shakespeare’ have received critical acclaim and he is the founding member of his current company ‘Performance Exchange’.

He particularly enjoys working with youngsters and involves them as much as possible during his workshops - and he certainly had no shortage of volunteers from would-be thespians at the ISR, with students from both the Secondary and Primary schools eager to take part in various cameo roles.

All areas of Shakespearian drama, from the tragic and macabre to the comic and historic, were brought alive and portrayed with considerable style as pupils entertained their colleagues with scenes from ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Hamlet’, ‘The Tempest’ and other plays.

ISR students currently studying Shakespeare particularly benefited from discussion and explanation regarding language, dramatic timing and other important aspects of Elizabethan theatre - as well as having a lot of fun!

The ISR realises the educational value of having accomplished performers and artists work within the school, and the setting up of a programme of similar events figures in its plans.

International togetherness at ISE

A great new addition to ISE this year is the ‘Booster Club’, headed by Jamie Stevens. Backed by the generous sponsorship of GM, the Booster Club will provide financial and moral support for the band, the varsity and junior varsity sports. A booster cart and sports and band equipment has already been purchased.

Celebrating international togetherness with the flags of the 23 nations represented at ISE.

The goal of the Booster Club this year is to enhance school spirit and to celebrate customs from all nations.

The first event of the Booster Club was the presentation of the flags of the 23 nations represented in the school in a formal flag ceremony. The oldest child of each nation proudly presented the flag to the school, led by the Thai flag.

The next event will be Guy-Forkes night, a British tradition with fireworks, bonfire and dinner on November 5th. Way to go ISE!

Bookworms come a crawlin’ to St. Andrews!

Pupils at St. Andrew International School spent last week with their heads in books, more so than usual, as our annual Book Week took place from Kindergarten right through to Years 7 & 8. Pupils participated in a wide variety of activities designed to promote their love of reading.

Everyone had a “booktastic” time all week!

Resident author Kate Evans read some of the books she has made, in turn inspiring the children to have a go at writing themselves. And have a go they did! Pupils let their imagination & creativity run riot to produce some very colourful and entertaining stories for the younger children.

On Thursday afternoon, the school was transformed into a tremendous book-related workshop. Children had fun making bookmarkers, enjoyed shared reading & writing, selected their favorite books and tried out some drama activities. All this, and they still found time to sample some magical delights from Hogwart’s Feast, as featured in Harry Potters adventures. Cosmic chocolate cake, cookies and sweeties definitely kept the children’s energy levels up for the remainder of the day.

Friday saw the big finale in the shape of a costume parade and assembly. Children chose a character from a book and came dressed accordingly. James and his giant peach could be spotted alongside several superheroes, not to mention someone with very big ears. Teachers’ drama skills came to the fore as they performed “The Shopping Basket” by John Burmingham. The audience seemed to take great pleasure in watching their teachers acting skills.

All in all, a booktastic week!
