Many winners at first PSC Monthly Medal

Wednesday October 11 at Laem Chabang was the setting for the inaugural PSC Golf Monthly Medal. On a day that dawned cloudy and overcast, with storms anticipated, 95 of the 101 golfers that signed up presented themselves at Laem Chabang, a testimony to the resilience of the breed. The weather gods rewarded that fortitude and play proceeded uninterrupted, although some light showers may have inconvenienced a few of the less hardy.

(L to R) Bob Davis, James Savage, Brenda Varnado and Andy Wellington, all winners in the first PSC monthly medal competition.

The start was orderly and uneventful, with one exception. A husband and wife team, finding themselves alone on the tee box at their hit off time, used a mobile to enquire as to the whereabouts of their playing partners. When informed that they were group 7 at course ‘B’ they scurried back from hole 7 course ‘B’ to their proper tee. Perhaps this unsettled the lady a little and was her excuse for losing the ‘D’ flight trophy on count back.

For the most part play proceeded smoothly due probably to the shepherding talents of marshal Alan Stephens. He mustered the flock of golfers in a professional manner with no stragglers and not a bleat was herd (pun intended).

The medal event was contested in four divisions with first, second and third in each. With six technical prizes, eight lucky loser prizes, and over 20 lucky draw prizes the rewards were generous indeed, having a total value of 28,000 baht.

In A Division, Rick was not quite Sharp enough to snip first place from Andy Wellington, who was not as sleepy as he looked. O/B Evans stayed in bounds on the back nine and beat Jim Brackett on count back for 3rd place.

B Division was also quite close. Arab Russell’s game was not “in tents” enough to steal 1st place from Bob Davis but it was strong enough to relegate Ken Lill to 3rd place on count back.

C Division proved a no contest as Jim Savaged the field to win by 8 strokes. Bill (Tiny) Davis proved too strong for Andy Spence in yet another count back. But then Andy was out of his weight division and was happy to concede 2nd and accept 3rd.

D Division, not to be outdone in the count back department, had two members of the fairer sex staging their own race to the line, with Mam just Trayling Brenda Varnado on the back nine. Mr. Alphabet Rehm Hansrueidi (phew) finished in 3rd place.

After the event players assembled in the restaurant area where PSC Secretary Ron Herbert welcomed them. In a short welcoming speech, Ron thanked all participants and pledged the support of the Sports Club Executive for the continuance of this event.

Scorers Bill Thompson and Jim Montgomery had meanwhile collated all scores and prize giving took place. The trophy presentation was capably handled by committee man and MC for the day Bill (Tiny) Davis, ably assisted by his vertically challenged associate Bernie Tuppin.

Players appeared delighted with the prizes, especially the Lucky Seven (7th Place) recipients, who commented on the spirit in which theirs were given. Booby prizes for 2nd last were awarded in each division and appropriately these were golf lessons and floating balls. Brian Ellis was seen negotiating the purchase of some of these balls, as he had drowned three of his own on an early hole.

There proved to be no basis to the rumor that Lumpy Russell’s long drive was made in a golf cart and he won the recognition of his fellow competitors plus the money for his effort. Both Rick Sharp and Derek Brook agreed that their success in the long putts were the result of poor chipping. Jim Byrne, Russell Finch, Philippe Berra and Jim Brackett claimed that their success with near pin awards were the result of pure skill. Hardly surprising!

This event, an initiative of the new PSCG committee chaired by Dennis Willet, owes it’s debut to the great amount of work put in by Bill Thompson and Jim Montgomery, also the moral and financial support of the Executive Committee. Their confidence was not misplaced as over ninety golfers took part. Given that scheduling difficulties prevented a large number of members participating, it would seem that the future of this event as a monthly fixture is assured.

The success of such tournaments is not possible without the help of generous sponsorship and PSCG would like to acknowledge that support, and urge our members to support these businesses: Diana Group (Green Bottle Pub), Shenanigan’s, Rosy O’Grady’s, Cafe Kronborg, Good Golf (Duck Square), Richard Livingston (Diana Driving Range), Papa San Ray Rogers, and Mike McLaren (3rd Rd. Driving Range).

With the awards and lucky draws completed the consensus suggested that the event was an outstanding success. More about next month’s event when details of time and venue are confirmed. But it will take place and you are all invited. Sign up at PSC office.

Team Toyota blitzes opposition

Natavud champion with one round to go

The 5th Round of the All Thailand Touring Car Championship was run at the Bira Circuit last Sunday, with the all-conquering Toyota Team Thailand Corollas of Natavud and Pete storming across the line in formation finish for a crushing 1-2 victory, with the Honda of Grant Supaphongs a very distant third.

The view Natavud gave the rest of the field

Pole sitter Natavud began poorly and was fourth behind Ekprawat (Honda), Pete and Grant. By lap 5 Pete was through to take the lead, and five laps later Natavud moved on Grant to take 3rd and was immediately elevated to 2nd when Ekprawat was forced to pit with a misfiring engine.

The two Corollas circulated well within themselves, and Pete slowed to let Natavud take the lead three laps from home. The win also gave Natavud the championship, with one round still to go on the 10th of December. At that meeting, Pete and Ekprawat will decide who gets 2nd in the championship.

This was another 2+4 meeting, and the bikes put on a great display, with Sean Sinclair and Pisut having a great tussle in the first race, until both succumbed to mechanical gremlins, leaving Paul Coulsen and Jamie Fleming the surprised leading pair from Richard Brownring in 3rd.

In the second race for the Big Bikes it was a race long fight for supremacy between Paul Shoesmith, Pisut and Sean Waller, with Waller showing much heart and having lots of hairy moments until the last lap when he threw the whole lot away at the hairpin, the bike leaving the circuit in several pieces, while Waller was lucky to be uninjured. Shoesmith ran out the deserved winner from Pisut and Sean Sinclair. Series leader, Matt Paterson was a non-starter, being held up in China.

Round 1 of “Golden 3” charity bowling tournament a “golden” success

Second Event coming Oct. 28

The Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya is proud to announce that the first event of the ‘Golden 3’ Charity Bowling Tournament, held on September 30 at OD Bowling Hall, had a net result of 110,000 baht. This includes a donation of 50,000 baht collected during the 50th birthday party of Heinz Fritz of the Tropic Restaurant on Naklua Road. Congratulations!

Khun Rit (101) with her friend Khun Sawai (70) at the the Banglamung Home of the Aged.

In total, 84 teams participated and more than 50,000 baht worth of prize money, gold and several hotel & dinner vouchers were won by the participants.

The ‘Golden 3’ Bowling Tournament is organised to donate badly needed lockers to the 300 elderly residents of the Banglamung Home of the Aged on Sukhumvit Road. The order for these lockers has been placed, and requires 225,000 baht.

The sponsor for the first event was the Alois X. Fassbind Foundation, established in memory of Alois Fassbind, or ‘Mr. Pattaya’ as he was known throughout the world. It was Alois who, as president of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya, showed a keen interest in the Banglamung Home, and was instrumental for several donations, such as its medical center and laundry facilities.

The second event will be held on Saturday, October 28, and is also at OD Bowling Hall, Pratumnak Road, South Pattaya, and is sponsored by 7 local companies. Siemens Industrial Services has donated 20,000 baht, and 10,000 baht each was received from: Ambiance Hotel, Euro Design Furniture & Art Gallery, Tropic Restaurant, Gletscherkuss Entertainment, My Way Restaurant, and Decorum Furniture & Decoration.

A total of 100 teams are expected to participate in the October 28 event. The entrance fee per team is 1,500 baht. Tickets will be sold by local Rotarians and are also available at any of the sponsors. Registration is accepted until 6.30 p.m. of the tournament day. The rules are similar to those of the first event.

The names of the sponsors will appear on T-shirts for each bowler, and on banners outside OD Bowling Hall. Inside OD Bowling, each sponsor will have its name displayed on banners above the bowling lanes. Siemens Industrial Services will have 4 lanes; the other 6 sponsors will have 2 lanes each.

The third and final Golden 3 Charity Bowling Tournament event will take place on Saturday, November 25. More news on that later.

The Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya thanks all sponsors and bowling teams for their generous support to improve the living conditions of the residents of the Banglamung Home of the Aged.

A special “Thank you” to all our local media who have been, are, and certainly will be of enormous help in promoting this charity project. Without them we could not have such a project. “Kop Khun Maak Krap!” to all of them!

Shootout at the (OK) Pattaya Bowl

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

Lewiinski’s were just unstoppable on this Friday the 13th in October. With a full team for a change and with Captain Nok bowling a 223 and Morn a 202 in the first game, along with Morn’s 210 in the second, Caf้ Ole could do little but watch Lewiinski’s take four points. Even Tue’s fine 215 in the last game for Caf้ Ole was not enough to gain even a single game or point. Nok and Morn finished the day with identical 555 series. Morn had a 642 with handicap.

With the four game sweep, Lewiinski’s recaptured first place, as House of the Golden Coin dropped to second and VFW Post 9876 moved up to third place. Caf้ Kronborg, after winning four points from a slumping Snowman team, continued moving up and is now near the middle of the pack.

Remy’s back in town

Pattaya Golf Society from the Bunker

On Tuesday October 10, 24 golfers from The Bunker went to Bangpra International Golf Club for a Stableford competition. The field was split into two groups as usual.

In division two, Bert Guy, who everybody knows as Remy, celebrated his return to Pattaya from Belgium with a fine win. In a rain interrupted round he scored 35 Stableford points to claim first prize. In second place, one point behind on 34 points was Canadian Gordon McKnight and in third place with 32 points was John Preddy.

In division one Welshman Norman Brooks took the honours with 32 points. Second place went to Shenanigans winner Mike Larsen with 31 points and a tie for third place between pensioner Dickey Barbe and Bruce Ogilve, both with 30 points.

Big week for John Swanson

Golf from Cafe Kronborg

Monday, October 9 - Treasure Hills (Stableford)

Treasure Hills was the venue for a fine day of golf. The tough greens took their toll with low scores being returned. However, John Swanson took 1st place with 34 points on a count back over Tomi Tikkonen. Brian Holden took 3rd place with 29 points. A fine day was had by all.

Thursday October 12 - Siam (stroke)

Siam Country Club was the venue for our regulars and an influx of welcome holidaymakers. A stroke comp was won by Jarmos Herzog with a net 67, followed by, who else? - John Swanson with net 69. Pete Galle was 3rd on 70 and then Derek Brooks was 4th with net 72.

Next week’s venues: Monday October 23 at Pattaya Country Club (Holiday), Thursday October 26 at Eastern Star for the Cafe Kronborg Monthly Mug.

Paul Kraft wins bragging rights for the day

Three Sisters Fun Golf

On Monday October 8, golfers from the Three Sisters met at Siam Country Club. As last week, carts were not available. Octogenarian Don Antonio and Herb Ishinaga suffered again as they labored around the golf course.

Bragging rights for the day were won by Paul Kraft. On the third hole, Paul cranked his second shot from the right side of the fairway over the tree protecting the green from about 180 yards out. Doug Powell watched in awe as the ball cleared the tree top and landed on the green about 10 feet from the cup. The big thing about the shot was that Paul had used his seven iron uphill and over the tree to get to the green. Most of us would have had to use our four wood to get close to the green.

Doug Powell came in second with 33 points as the rest of the field struggled. Jerry Lien hit some good shots but he also hit some lousy ones like the rest of the golfers.

Kenny Mau’s slices were not working as the previous week when he won the bragging rights, but he was a staunch hacker tearing up the golf course. All in all, fun was had by all and as beers were consumed, the games got better.

Lewiinski's/Orchid defeated The Haven, again

TAGGS... golf from The Haven

Wednesday, October 11 - Phoenix Golf and Country Club (Match Play Better Ball)

1st: Lewiinski’s/Orchid Golf Club, 5
2nd: TAGGS (The Haven), 3

There were fresh bodies on both sides, but the results remained the same. Lewiinski’s/Orchid defeated The Haven in their monthly match play series. The format was Match Play Better Ball held at Phoenix and the gents from Soi Pattayaland are still unbeaten by The Alternative Gentlemen’s Golf Society. Lewiinski’s won at Phoenix by a score of 5 to 3, and they lead the series by a score of 3 1/2 to one half.

The handicap differential between the two teams was the closest yet in the series. Lewiinski’s average handicap was just under 14, while The Haven’s average was an even seventeen. This is the third time that The Haven has lost when a single match going the other way would have resulted in a tie. But the truth of the matter is, that only one of the matches was close, and Lewiinski’s took that one 2 and 1. These guys are good!

Monday, October 9 - Natural Park Resort (Stroke Play)

1st: Klaus Schackt, 67 net
2nd: Ove Andersson, 74 net
3rd: Bengt Vinterskog, 75 net

Finland’s Klaus Schackt was the only golfer to break par as once again the gentlemen from The Haven found Natural Park Resort a tough nut to crack. Playing in a TAGGS stoke play competition on Monday, October 9, Klaus shot a 40/42 off a fifteen handicap and won his first Knotted Putter trophy.

Scandies swept the board as Sweden’s Ove Andersson and Bengt Vinterskog took the second and third spots with net scores of 74 and 75 respectively.

Friday, October 13 - Century Chonburi Country Club (Stableford)

1st: Mike Dabanovich, 37 points
2nd: Jeff McLaury, 36 points
3rd: Mark Gorda, 33 points

If you can’t remember what the weather was like on Friday the Thirteenth, it was the day you woke up and knew the rainy season was here. While most golfers rolled over and went back to sleep, there were a few who hadn’t gone to bed yet. Among the latter, was Mike “Dabber” Dabanovich who somehow remembered he had won last year out of the Hare House while suffering fetal alcohol syndrome. “Dabber” might be on to something; he won again when more sensible people would be looking for a transfusion.

Playing off eighteen, Mike stumbled onto 37 points at Century Chonburi and won his first single’s competition out of The Haven. He edged out Jeff McLaury by a single point. Rounding out the podium was that always well-dressed Mark Gorda who had 33 points.

PH3 Run 866

Isn’t it absolutely outrageous? There you are enjoying the quiet sophistication of the apres-run atmosphere and suddenly the Grand Master screws up your whole evening. “You are doing the Hash Sheet.” Just like that. No warning. It’s an order from high that cannot be resisted even if it has been a little while since I last did one. Three or four years if memory serves me correctly. So let’s slam my memory into reverse.

Were was I? Oh yes, at the Scandi Bar with Fossil promising me a night of bliss if I will give her a lift to the A site. For those Hashers who don’t know what a night of bliss with Fossil entails, let me explain. She doesn’t talk to you all night. Sweet bliss! Nice short drive up the Siam Country Club Road, then an off-road section to the middle of nowhere, slightly behind the golf course. As A sites go, it went ok. Eighty two runners and no new shoes detected. Come back Hammer, the shoe industry needs you.

Hares F&F and Salvatore set us off in the direction of some ominous looking hills bordering the Bira motor racing circuit. Luckily the lazy gits didn’t take us that far but instead found a delightful meandering stream with chocolate coloured water. They zig-zagged us from one side to the other several times to ensure that everyone got wet, smelly feet. Most of the runners had started with wet, smelly feet so they didn’t care.

At one time I have definite recollections of the paper going right through the middle of a tapioca field. This left me with a warm glow in my heart as I felt certain the hares would earn Hash S@#t for this bit of class stupidity. By now I had gone through the pain barrier and wasn’t seeing too much. I think I must have missed seeing quite a lot more tapioca whilst I was in this condition. I have vague recollections of Sir Airhead anxiously looking for a short cut home, but still hadn’t found one when he was two thirds of the way through the run. In general terms it was a pretty good run, especially for young, fit, FRBs like me.

On to the circle. Quite a good night for silly hats. One looked like a Fossil prototype tit-implant reject. The other, a rather fancy sort of floppy berry, is reputed to have belonged to a Hash runner called Rembrandt and had been missing, believed stolen, for 253 years. We had three Christening’s. Hereinafter Kiartan Henriksen will be known as Fart Face which seems a definite improvement over such a silly Scandihooligan name. Noi is now TNT and Mrs Butt Weasel, aka Jum, is now officially Mrs Weasel’s Butt. Six sinners were duly punished for various heinous crimes.

Curiosity got the better of Cface and Fossil when they found an unmarked plastic bottle of clear fluid in the cooler and just had to have a taste. This was new medicine I had developed for curing dandruff, in-growing toenails and AIDS and it quickly became the newest, cruellest punishment of the night - banana down-downs. Grand Master Kidney Wiper was duly punished for being totally responsible for the world increase in oil prices. He is employed to work six days a week but gets away with only three - on full pay. Sir Airhead failed to notice that his 650 run plaque had disappeared from the wall of the TQ (what’s unusual about that? Most nights he doesn’t even notice there are walls at the TQ). Needle Dick was iced for no apparent reason, but probably because he is Sir Airhead’s room mate. Sweet Plum for flashing her pornographic back-pack-cum-dildo. Terminal F for attempting to lodge overnight in Boy’s Town.

Celebrities for the night were Salvatore for haring ten runs; Sir Airhead was presented with his 650 run plate (now suitably engraved having been stolen for that purpose); Butt Weasel and Sexy Slim for their 50th runs. Time for the hares song, they didn’t have one so Sir Airhead made them do a sexy dance whilst he sang... Then the Hash Hymn and back on the off road journey back to SCC road, then to the on-in at Patrick’s, a very well presented selection of food was available and went down very well, thanks Patrick.

Good run, good circle and goodnight. Dr BHC
