Steve Frazer wins Nakorn Sawan 1/4 Marathon

Steve Frazer, a 52-year-old Scot from London who works for the London branch of Hong Kong Bank, arrived in Thailand on Saturday night, September 7th on one of his many forays to Thailand that would eventually put him in the place he loves, Pattaya.

Pattaya regular Steve Frazer stands atop the podium after winning his age group in the Nakorn Sawan 10.5k 1/4 marathon - just over 12 hours after he landed in Thailand after a long flight from London!

However, this trip was just a little different. After the long flight from London, which touched down in Bangkok at 6:00 p.m., Steve and his good friend Alan Ross from Pattaya Sports Supply headed directly to Nakorn Sawan. By 6:00 a.m. the next morning, Steve was pounding the pavement in the Nakorn Sawan 10.5k 1/4 marathon.

About 45 minutes later, just a little over 12 hours after landing in Thailand, Steve found himself crossing the finish line in first place for his age group - a remarkable test of stamina! And a remarkable fete considering over 1,500 people participated in the event.

Steve was unavailable for comment (he has already returned to London), but Alan Ross said, “Steve has been visiting Pattaya several times a year for the past 10 years. He should be back at Christmas.”

Alan also said that, “Running in Thailand is a very social experience. Thais will often chat with you out on the course, and I’ve often met up with them after the race for a friendly get together.”

Alan also said that running in Thailand is gaining popularity with foreign tourists and expats, largely because of the social aspect of the events. “Once, I would be the only foreigner running (in the races). Now, many more foreigners are out there.” Alan should know, he’s run in countless road races and has a wall full of medals for completing them.

Alan would like to get more local expats and tourists interested in participating in these fun events, which take place all over the Kingdom. Alan has plenty of information on upcoming events, including the next running event, the Amari & Qantas/British Airways Charity Midnight Run, 6 or 12 km (up to you which course to run) in Bangkok on Saturday, October 14. Just ten days later is the Nike 18th Annual UN Day 10 km International Run, also in Bangkok on October 24, followed by the Bangkok Marathon on November 26. Alan invites anyone interested to visit his shop on Soi Regent Marina for more information.

Congratulations Steve Frazer, you’ve done yourself and Pattaya proud.

Second Quiksilver Surfing: A Huge Success

by Peter Cummins

Japanese surfers Akai Yutaka and Mazaki Onozalu, down to Thailand from the cold, forbidding waters around Japan, revelled in the warm, hospitable ambience of the Andaman Sea, by finishing first and third, respectively, in the Open Division of the just-completed Second Phuket Quiksilver Surfing Contest. Second was Australia’s Paul King, with Tom Fekete of the USA fourth.

Fifth, with a remarkable performance against the “big people” was Australia’s 12-year-old Simon de Maria, elevated to the “Team Quiksilver” ranks after his great showing for 10th place in the First Contest last year.

Thereafter “Team Quiksilver” Thai surfers dominated the next three places, with inaugural event winner Thailand’s Chalong Tongnook in sixth, Khun Kai, seventh and Werapong, eighth.

The Open Division allowed competitors to use either longboards - Malibu style (over 8 ft.) or shortboards (up to 8 ft.).

A highlight of the three-day ‘surf-fest’ was the Axe Paddle Race - “a test of skill rather than strength” according to contest director Kym Thompson - won by Australian Paul King from France’s Teiki Ballan, with Thai competitors Weraqpong Tonghome and Chalong Tongsook third and fourth. The Axe race was extremely close and, as it started and finished right among the crowd, was the most exciting event of the four comprising the contest.

Sydney or Phuket? Kata Beach turns it on! Photo Peter Cummins

The longboard event saw the bigger-built Antipodeans, Europeans and Americans ascendant, with Aussies Bill Schroeller and Mick Robinson dominating in first and second, followed by Rogger Akker of the Netherlands, Mark Abatagelo (USA), Peter Ranisaw (UK), Paolo Pablo (Argentina), Simon Gibson (UK) and Bill Houk (USA), third to eighth, respectively.

Last - and definitely not least - came the “Micro Grommets”, user-friendly, lightweight boards especially designed and built for beginners up to 22 years of age. The competition was intense - especially from doting parents on the beach. The Thai ‘deks’ were unstoppable and filled the first four places in this junior division, with Mana Nongluck, Supat Tiengoi, Sawang Phukoumnoi and Niphon Jedee ‘sweeping the seas’.

With surfing also in its ‘infancy’ in Thailand, the organizers of the Quiksilver Contest, organized by head of Aloha Surf Sports Company Andre M. Plump and directed by Surf Legend Kym Thompson, soon realized that encouraging children was the best guarantee of promoting this super- healthy, affordable by all and easily-accessible sport in the Kingdom.

One of the dedicated judges, Paul Bunyataravej would agree entirely. Paul gave up an Olympic assignment in Sydney to help the surfing cause in Thailand.

Held off Kata Yai Beach from 15 - 17 September, the contest attracted some 60 entries from Argentina, Australia, France the Netherlands, the UK, the USA and host country Thailand, and drew huge crowds to the beachfront and promenade, which became a carnival.

Sponsors included Aloha Surf Sports Co. Ltd., AXE/Unilever, Amstel Beer, the Jet Team Co. Ltd., Lipton/Unilever, Oakley, Reef Brazil, Tower records, videos, books (Thailand) and, of course, principal sponsor Quiksilver.

At the awards ceremony, Andre acknowledged the strong support of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Kata/Karon Municipal Offices “without which,” he noted, “there would be no event.”

Golden 3 first round a sell-out

The Jomtien-Pattaya Rotary Club’s Golden 3 Charity Bowling Tournament was a great success, with almost 100 teams competing. The novel Golden Shot where competitors had only one ball to attempt to score a strike against the golden pins turned into a Golden Shoot-out, the scores were so close.

The Banglamung Home for the Aged will be the main recipients of the charity money raised by the Rotary Club.

The second round of the Golden 3 Charity Bowling Contest will be held at OD Bowling Alley on October 28th. Tickets can be obtained from any Jomtien-Pattaya Rotarian, or from OD Bowl.

Pattaya Bush HHH Run No.1

 14th October 2000

For Hashers and Soon-To-Be-Hashers who would like some hashing/running challenge: there will be a new style monthly run starting Saturday 14th October 2000 - The Pattaya Bush Hash House Harriers. Hash House Harriers are internationally known for their fun run or paper chase with the emphasis on socialising after a run.

The actual run starts at approx. 3:30 p.m. and will consist of a long and short trail. The duration of the long run will be 11/2 to 2 hrs but the choice of trail will be entirely up to the individual. We will retain the normal ‘fun’ element of the traditional HHH so it will not be a race.

After the run you can cool down with a dip in the swimming pool, take a shower, or simply drink your first beer of the day while enjoying the delicious food sponsored by Shenanigans The Irish Pub (formerly Delaney’s). A traditional ‘Inaugural Run’ Pattaya Bush Hash House Harriers T-shirt will be available.

For more information and to ensure you will receive a T-shirt on the running day please contact the organizers Johnny (Charlie Manson) tel. (038) 427024, 01-4558619 Email: [email protected] or Tony tel. (038) 425891 (Room 77). On On.

House of the Golden Coin sweeps Lewiinski’s

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

Mio captains the House of the Golden Coin to a sweep of first place Lewiinski’s.

The House of the Golden Coin, led by Captain Mio, with Udom and Suphan, won all four points from a weakened Lewiinski’s team, who were missing two of their best bowlers. The sweep enabled the Golden Coin to jump into a tie for third place with VFW Post 9876.

TQ 1 Bob is now only one point behind Lewiinski’s after winning three points.

Best game of the day was once again bowled by Mio (Golden Coin) with a good 209 game and best series with 546. Ken Crow (Cafe Kronborg), trying to regain his lost form, rolled a 200 game. Wan (TQ 1 Bob) knocked down a total of 506 pins and ended with a 632, with handicap.

RVYC Special Event weekend

On October 10, The Royal Varuna Yacht Club’s Laser fleet captain Charlie Zbinden turns 60, and 5 days earlier RVYC’s sailing secretary will be 75 years on this earth. The Club would like to celebrate these milestones with members this weekend, October 7 and 8.

On both days RVYC will organize special fun races and would like to see as many members participating as possible. RVYC should have at least 60 boats on the water (and hope the boat boys can handle it).

On Saturday there will be free wine tasting at the Beach Bar, followed by a BBQ dinner. For those of you who will participate in the races, the dinner will be free. Non-sailors will have to buy a ticket (children half price).

For the catering, RVYC needs to know how many plan to come, and asks that you PLEASE send Richard van den Heuvel an email ([email protected]) indicating how many persons are going to join.

Richard and Charlie say, “Let us make it to be another full house party... Help blow some more life into our club! We are looking forward to see many of you.”

Country House finally falls

Country House suffered its first loss of the season, losing to the Kennel Dogs in week 11 of the Pattaya Sports Club Darts League. It was the only “Dogs” 4th win of the season, and they can be proud of the upset.

The loss enabled Pleasure Dome, with their week 11 win over The Bunker, to move up into a first place tie with Country House. Meanwhile, Cafe Kronborg and Ding Dong are not far behind.

Id from Country House retains the league’s highest out to date, 118. Nui from Ding Dong was added to the list of PSC dart players who have achieved a perfect 180 this season.

Wilf Latham wins two

Pattaya Golf Society from The Bunker

On Friday 22nd September, 18 golfers from The Bunker went to Phoenix Country Club to play a Stableford competition. The field was split into two groups: high and low handicap.

On a very stormy day with a one-hour delay halfway around the course, Wilf Latham won by playing good solid golf in division one. Scoring 42 Stableford points, 6 under par, he easily defeated Mr. Loy Mitchell and Hannu, who tied for second spot, both with 37 points.

In division two, Bob Hynes won with 34. Ian Phillips and Tony Callan tied for second place.

Wilf Latham does it again

On Tuesday 26th September, 19 golfers from The Bunker went to play the difficult Navy Course at Sattahip for a medal competition, playing the north and east courses, which have recently been altered so that nobody had prior knowledge of the holes.

Wilf Latham, playing at the top of his form at the moment, posted his second win inside of four days. His winning score of net 70 was 2 under par for the course. Joint second in division one were Bruce Lawrence and Mike Larsen, both with a par 72.

In division two Len Jones once again took first prize with 74. Runner up was John Preddy with 77. Nearest the pins were Peter Allcorn, Norman Brooks (2) and George Meigh.

George Meigh wins September Bunker Bonus

Scoring just 4 over par for the month of September, George Meigh was the worthy winner of this month’s Bunker Bonus, thus preventing Loy Mitchell of completing the hat trick. Well done George.

Kenny Mau wins Three Sisters

On Monday, September 25, golfers from the Three Sisters met at Siam Country Club. Competition was fierce but Kenny Mau prevailed shooting an admirable 40 Stableford points. Kenny hacked and sliced his ball with determination and vigor as he went from tee box to green. His putting kept him in the lead as no three putts appeared on his card. Kenny is now back in town from Johnston Island and again roaring around the golf courses.

In second place was the well known Don Antonio. At eighty plus years old, Don Antonio showed the rest of the field that he is still in the running. Hitting the ball up to 200 yards and straight most of the time, the Don showed youngsters Paul Kraft, Dougie Powell, Jerry Lien and Herbie that he is still a winner.

Dougie Powell and Paul Kraft were still hitting long tee shots but at times they were not too straight. As trees and bunkers got in their way, their scores deteriorated.

Jerry Lien again attacked his ball with his vicious swing but the trees and bunkers also got in his way. Although Herbie did a bit better going from tee to green, his putting was atrocious. Three putting three greens, it looked like he needed new glasses or some putting lessons.

Fun Golf from the Three Sisters will meet again next week to see who will get the bragging rights for the day. Congratulations goes out to Kenny Mau and Don Antonio for a well played round.

Barlow, Fortt and Jackson get hot on the course

TAGGS... golf from The Haven

Wednesday, September 27 - Natural Park Resort (Two Man Scramble)

1st: Mick Barlow & Keith Fortt, 78 gross, 69.8 net
2nd: Neville Steward & John Taylor, 79 gross, 72.4 net
3rd: Stephen Beard & Harry Riley, 80 gross, 72.4 net

TAGGS newcomer Mick Barlow paired up with TAGGS old comer Keith Fortt to win a Two Man Scramble competition on Wednesday, September 27, at Natural Park Resort. Their score of 69.8 was the only net score to break par, as once again Natural Park Resort got the better of the gentlemen from The Haven.

The course looked like it was going to get the better of Mick and Keith when they both went O.B. on the second hole and finished that par four with a triple bogey seven. They recovered nicely to shoot a three over par 39 on both the front nine and back nine to give Mick his first TAGGS win and to give Keith his third pairs win since The Haven opened.

Second place went to New Zealander John Taylor and Aussie Neville Steward who had a miserable start with a 44 and then proceeded to shoot nine strokes better on the back. Neville’s long, hot drives started to find the fairway and John twice put it in the hole from off the green. It’s a wonder that Neville can play golf with all the distractions of new girlfriends, ex-girlfriends, and girlfriend wannabees. And he has only been here for three weeks!

Friday, September 29 - Century Rayong (Stableford)

1st: George Jackson, 39 points
2nd: Sefan Hoge, 36 points
3rd: Mike Dabanovich, 35 points

George “One Ball” Jackson bought a new set of Ping clubs to haul his rear end out of the golf doldrums. Like any new irons and woods, at first George couldn’t hit them. That lasted two weeks and then on Friday, George playing off fifteen, shot 84 down at the Faldo course in Ban Chang for his first TAGGS win since the ninth of June. Look for old “One Ball” to get hot just when the weather is starting to cool.

Stefan Hoge took second place with 36 points, followed by Mike Dabanovich with 35 points.

Fitness Tips: Warning time (Part 2)

by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

G’day Pattaya,

This week I have part 2 of portions of a disturbing report to pass on to you about a sugar substitute.

There is quite a lot of technical terminology in this report exert, so if you find it dry reading, I can well understand. Let’s just say that it is seriously bad for you.

If you are using it as an artificial sweetener to cut down on the calories you ingest then it is time to get back into using sugar and get out from behind the desk and go for a walk. That will burn the calories from sugar and greatly reduce your exposure to the health risks you can read below.

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names, NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. Aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965, when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

Aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods. Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The risks to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with certain chronic health problems from excitotoxins are great. Even the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), which usually understates problems and mimics the FDA party-line, recently stated in a review that, “it is prudent to avoid the use of dietary supplements of L-glutamic acid by pregnant women, infants, and children. The existence of evidence of potential endocrine responses, i.e., elevated cortisol and prolactin, and differential responses between males and females, would also suggest a neuroendocrine link and that supplemental L-glutamic acid should be avoided by women of childbearing age and individuals with affective disorders.” Aspartic acid from aspartame has the same deleterious effects on the body as glutamic acid.

The exact mechanism of acute reactions to excess free glutamate and aspartate is currently being debated. As reported to the FDA, those reactions include: Headaches/migraines, nausea, abdominal pains, fatigue (blocks sufficient glucose entry into brain), sleep problems, vision problems, anxiety attacks, depression, and asthma/chest tightness.

One common complaint of persons suffering from the effect of aspartame is memory loss. Ironically, in 1987, G.D. Searle, the manufacturer of aspartame, undertook a search for a drug to combat memory loss caused by excititory amino acid damage. Blaylock is one of many scientists and physicians who are concerned about excititory amino acid damage caused by ingestion of aspartame and MSG.

One of the many experts who have spoken out against the damage being caused by aspartate and glutamate include Adrienne Samuels, Ph.D., an experimental psychologist specializing in research design. Another is Olney, a professor in the department of psychiatry, School of Medicine, Washington University, a neuroscientist and researcher, and one of the world’s foremost authorities on excitotoxins. (He informed Searle in 1971 that aspartic acid caused holes in the brain of mice.) Also included is Francis J. Waickman, M.D., a recipient of the Rinkel and Forman Awards, and Board certified in Pediatrics, Allergy, and Immunology.

Other concerned scientists include: John R. Hain, M.D., Board Certified Forensic Pathologist, and H.J. Roberts, M.D., FACP, FCCP, Diabetic Specialist, and selected by a national medical publication as “The Best Doctor in the US”.

John Samuels is concerned, also. He compiled a list of scientific research sufficient to show the dangers of ingesting excess free glutamic and aspartic acid.

There are many more who can be added to this long list.

It is just not worth the risk, get out and do some exercise and enjoy the taste of real sugar - you will be much better off for it.

Readers, this entire article, both last week and this, has been brought to you from the International Health & Racquet Club’s industry journal, CBI (Club Business International). The extracted article was originally produced for the New England Medical Journal.

Please note: I just present the facts, opinion is up to the individual. To produce the worst effects mentioned above you will have to consume considerable quantities of aspartame over a period of years, but why place yourself at risk when the natural alternative is no danger to you?

Carpe’ Diem

PH3 Run 864

A small but enthused pack gathered at the Scandi Bar for Monday’s Hash run. I checked in with Fossil and Dr. Pinky (why the doctor?). It’s so wonderful for me to be back in the Land of Smiles. I’ve been running since Run #13 with the Pattaya Hash and have seen it mature from running just once every other week to weekly with packs in excess of 100 every week during the tourist season.

This is fantastic and what Charlie Manson is doing in establishing a new Hash should be encouraged and supported. The Pattaya Hash has easily matured enough to support two weekly Hashes. Anyway, I commend you your efforts Charlie and wish you every success.

It was wonderful to see many of my old Hash buddies at the run after being gone for seven long months. I had to take the bus to the run site, couldn’t find a ride, but our bus driver is excellent and with the bus un-crowded for a change so it wasn’t bad at all. You see I’ve been very spoiled over the years. Anyway, once to the run site ~ a Chinese graveyard with a fantastic view of the Gulf of Siam coastline as far as Pattaya Park ~ I was able to renew my friendships with Fossil, Sir Airhead, F&F, Needle D, General Kidney Wiper, Chicken Fellow, Compost Heap, Spunk Bubble, Charlie Manson & Sharon Tate ~ as well as the hares CFace and Fudd F ~ and not to forget all you Beautiful Thai ladies who bring so very much to the Pattaya Hash week after week. I love you all dearly and for those Hashers who have not Hashed with many other Hash groups around the world, I can only say that our Pattaya Hash is exceptional and our Thai ladies the cream of the female crop. Buddha bless you one and all.

General Kidney Wiper called for the starting circle to be formed and did the usual new shoes routine. Sorry I had nothing to contribute this week. The Hares explained about the run and the pack was off.

Fossil as usual led the FRB’s at a brisk pace. The run was just the right length for me, especially after not running for seven months. The countryside was beautiful and varied with a minimal of cattle. I was part of the second wave and caught up on the latest news from Needle D and Kidney Wiper. One check was right in a grass covered water puddle, which I happily wadded through to continue the run and find paper. Oh what beautiful paper it was too! CFace and Fudd F did a fantastic job ~ well done lads!

Once back from the run, plenty of cold liquid refreshment was enjoyed by all and the ladies had their alternate eating circle as well ~ a time honored tradition. The sunset was spectacular with the lights of Jomtien visible ~ dominated by the majestic Pattaya Park tower. The circle was called and after a few non-participating Hashers were iced for failure to pay attention, the raffle, conducted by the lovely Ewok took place. After all these months, I won two of the prices ~ one free Hash run ticket and a wrist wallet for F&F’s beautiful, charming lady. General Kidney Wiper then had the returners in for a drink and later Sir Airhead was called in as Religious Advisor.

The Circle continued with other sinners being iced, but I can’t remember all the names ~ except that the visiting Hashers from the Manila and Angeles City Hashes were properly iced. I was then called in to sit on ice and my Hammer song was sung by Chicken F while my current lady sat on my knee. I can never express to you all how much that song means to me. But it’s also obvious that many of the current Pattaya Hash does not even know me. Time for new personalities. Last General Kidney Wiper gave a down-down to Kill Benny for being a repeated Hash Crash.

The hares were called to sing their song and an excellent one it was ~ again well done CFace and Fudd F. Happy hour was at the Classroom with all the lovely schoolgirls. They’ll never be safe as long as I live ~ Ha! Ha!

With that I bid you all another great Hash run.

On-On: Hammer
