Pattaya Persons of the Millennium

Alois X. Fassbind Sophin Thappajug Father  Raymond A. Brennan Cssr

As promised, the Pattaya Mail threw open its fax machines, letter boxes and email addresses so that you, the people of Pattaya, could register your votes for the Pattaya Person of the Millennium.

Whilst the outcome could have been predictable, the variety and cross-section of Pattaya and its people could not have been. There were ten thousand and seventeen nominations - much more than you would have expected too!

In line with the image of Pattaya as a tourism venue there were numerous nominations from the Tourism and Hospitality industry. These were people who had shaped Pattaya and one in particular who had helped put Pattaya on the world map.

There were even two nominations from local government and three for Pattaya people who had passed on to the great resort in the sky. The Pattaya Mail’s publisher, Peter Malhotra, even gained a nomination for his services to truthful journalism, in itself often considered an oxymoron.

However, it was the charitable causes, and people involved with them, that came through so strongly in all your minds. The first, second and third most popular nominations were people who also are (or were) well known as benefactors to the less fortunate members of Pattaya society.

So who are the Pattaya People of the Millennium? The first is Father Raymond Brennan CSSR. The priest who found an abandoned baby on his doorstep and 22 years later has an orphanage with over 600 children - those abandoned, left homeless after tragedies, afflicted with physical problems children, who have come to rely on Father Brennan as their only “father”. One man, who through his calling, has been denied the physical right of fatherhood, and yet has become the most prolific “father” in Pattaya. Father Raymond Brennan, the people of Pattaya salute you!
