Panthers maul Corsaires
On a freezing Sunday afternoon, with black ice covering
the pitch at the International School of the Regents on Rayong Road, Pattayas
intrepid warriors took on the Kingdoms best expat rugby team from Bangkok, the
Bangkok Corsaires (referred to in this article as they, them, etc.).
Due to an absence of a full compliment of visiting players, however, a
new game was invented: The Pattaya 13s. The game kicked off at 3:00 p.m. at a frenetic
pace, with the ball being thrown around all over the pitch and no team being able to break
through each others defense.
The Pattaya Panthers defeated the
Bangkok Corsaires 7-5 at the ISR pitch.
Comments from the touchline like "slow it down" were
superfluous as nature had already started this process from the kickoff. The first
breakthrough in the game came when the Panthers flying winger, David Garred, picked up the
ball inside his own half and managed to get through the Corsaires defense. David
immediately realized his mistake, as he now had to decide whether to run the distance,
being chased by an opposition "flitting fairy" (black), or do the sensible thing
and kick for a touch. Being antipodean and lacking gray matter, he chose the wrong option,
and ran it all the way. The try was then converted by Steve Ritchie and the Panthers were
7-0 up!
The pace of the game was then upped (so the players claimed), with many
a crunching tackle being made. Chris Ullyat did his impression of a lame panther as he
crawled off the pitch towards the end of the first half, pleading that he was just shagged
out and fancied a rest!
The second half continued in the same vein as the first, with more
players succumbing to injuries. However, it wasnt long before the Corsaires
responded with an unconverted try.
Whilst the Panthers were rather dejected over this, there was the plus
side that when the brick wall playing at center for the Corsaires ran through Steve
Fraser, he managed to knock Steve out. Upon closer review of Steve lying unconscious, one
of the Panthers, "Lyban Lose" correctly stated that "we need some water
here". He was quickly rebuffed by one of the Panthers captains, Alan Quick,
with a "No, what we need is a new center." So, Steve was then assisted off the
pitch looking and walking exactly like he was 12 hours before.
After the kickoff, Jeff Horan continued playing his own brand of rugby
(doesnt he get fed at home?), and was generally not content if he didnt have a
loose Corsaires limb in his arms.
Tight defense from the Panthers kept the Corsaires at bay for the
remaining time, with some prototype tackling on show for the first time, such as the
Darren Rose "Eye-Butt", the Eoin and Chris pincer movement which resulted in
both Panthers being partially paralyzed due to the impact, and the Corsaires player
requiring stitches due to laughing too much. Steve/David, this is probably all news to you
as were not sure you remember any of this after the concussion!
At the end of the second half, both teams were looking significantly
worse for wear. Final score: Pattaya Panthers 7 - Bangkok Corsaires 5.
Many thanks to the Corsaires for coming down and giving us a game, and
also thanks to Delaneys for the beer and grub after the game.
The Pattaya Panthers train at 19:00 on Tuesday nights at the Ambassador
Hotel. They are now saving up for the pitch rental fee for their next fixture. All are
welcome to come and play, and any assistance from local businesses with pitch rental would
be gratefully (and publicly!) received.
Stop Press: Unconfirmed reports of Corsaires scoring two tries in the third half.
Pattaya Womens Touch Rugby Team Win Debut
Wives and friends of the Delaneys Pattaya Panthers
Rugby team formed their own team for a womens touch competition.
Pattaya Womens Touch Rugby team
defeated the Bangkok Corsettes 3 tries to nil at ISR field.
Sundays winning match against Bangkoks team Corsettes at
ISR ground was an unexpected delight, as it was for most their first match in this code.
A three tries to nil score for the Pattaya ladies with player of the
match Brigit McCormack scoring 2 tries and Gay Horan one.
Pattaya dominated play and the only "certain" try for the
Corsettes was thwarted by the faster defense from the locals.
Celebrations were had by all after the match at Delaneys.
A re-match is planned for next month in Bangkok.
Pattaya womens touch team practices each Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at
Ambassador City Jomtien. Any interested players are welcome.
Eddie Shows Hes Ready!
Mika Hakkinen may have won the Canadian Grand Prix for
Ron Dennis McLaren Mercedes team, but the "star" of the show was third
place man Eddie Irvine for Scuderia Ferrari. Eddie, more usually known for his mouth than
his ability, was bumped off the track at three quarters distance, by Hakkinens
teammate David Coulthard, and simply stormed home, showing everyone that passing is still
possible in Formula 1 and setting the fastest lap of the race in the process.
With around 19 laps to go and the cars behind the pace car, Coulthard
had attempted a ridiculous pass on Irvine and took them both off the course. Coulthard did
a quick pit to check for damage, but was then called back in for a ten second stop-go
penalty applied as a reward for punting the Ferrari off.
Michael Schumacher will be trying to
get his Ferrari back on track this weekend at Magny Cours.
However, the action was all Irvine. His passing manoeuvre on Herbert in
the Stewart Ford was all guts and determination and that on Ralf Schumachers
Williams nothing short of brilliant. Many people have changed their opinion of Irvine
after that meeting.
The World Championship points score sees Hakkinen back at the top on 34
points, followed by Michael Schumacher (30), Irvine (25), Frentzen (13), Fisichella (13),
Coulthard (12) and Ralf Schumacher (12).
The next GP is the French this weekend at Magny Cours, and be prepared
for more drama as Coulthard attempts to defend his place at McLaren, while Eddie
consolidates at Ferrari. Damon Hill will be shown a chequered flag by Eddie Jordan, since
he appears to have forgotten what one looks like and Zanardi will making more excuses to
Sir Frank. Stay tuned!

PSC Golf in June
June starts to wind down on Sunday the 27th with
Lewiinskis playing stroke at Green Valley, and on Monday the 28th stroke play at
Sattahip with PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg or with the PSC Splinter Group from the
Green Bottle at Khao Kheow.

for a two-man better ball competition.
On Wednesday the 30th there are visits to Noble Place from the Green
Bottle playing Stableford, or to Pattaya Country Club from Hare House playing a Greensome
Foursome.
On Thursday the 1st of July, a public holiday, PSC Golf Café Kronborg
goes to the excellent course at Century Chonburi, and on Friday the 2nd of July the
Splinter Group go to Bangpakong Riverside, while Hare House go to Sattahip, both playing
Stableford.
The July Schedule can be seen at the PSC Golf Venues, at
Delaneys, in Pattaya Mail and at our Web Site at www.pattayasports.org.
Hannu Kemila shoots personal best at Sriracha
PSC Golf from the Bunker
The young and talented Hannu (The Flying Finn) Kemila shot a career
best gross score of 86 with the Bunker boys at Sriracha International G. C. on Tuesday,
June 8th.
The fact that he putted badly, 35 putts in his record round, confirms
his accurate tee to green play. And although he hit only one par 3 green, he still parred
all four par 3 holes.
Ger Hakze, playing with Hannu, must have been infected by this dazzling
performance to also card his best score for some time now.
Full Results:
1st: Hannu Kemila, 43 points off 21 Hcp
2nd: Ger Hakze, 38 points off 21
3rd: Bill Jones, 36 points off 25
Near pins: Roy Mitchell (2), Hannu Kemila and Paul Butler.
In the Bunker bonus competition for June, Kemila
leads with -7 and Tommy Jeeves is a distant 2nd on +6.
PSC Golf Chairmans Report
by Michael J. Franklin,
Chairman PSC Golf
As we start another PSC Golf year we can again look forward to a wide
range of weekly competitions and major tournaments. The affiliation of Lewiinskis
and Scandic Hotel to PSC Golf earlier this year increases the monthly competitions to
around 40, and with Lewiinskis the chance to play competitions at the weekend.
Our major tournaments run centrally and by the member groups span the
year and total eighteen, with a further six local majors which we give playing or
organizational support to. In addition to the traditional Vegas Open, TQ Masters and
Classroom Classic, we now join with Delaneys for their Inaugural Open
and Funhill Cup Tournaments and they in turn support the PSC St.
Patricks Day Scramble. Two new major tournaments appear on the schedule: in
September the Canadian golfers will stage the first Jack-a-lope Open at Great Lake, and in
November, the first Diana Group Open will be held at Phoenix.
The member group and PSC Golf majors provide a good choice of events
throughout the year, giving most visiting golfers the chance to participate in a major
tournament during whatever period they may be here.
Our two main events are the PSC Full Monty Charity Classic
in January 2000, now in its fourth year, and the two day PSC Golf Championship in March.
The earlier date of January 2000, set for the Charity Classic, is to open this event to
more members in the high season and enable a more ambitious target to be achieved.
In 1999, the Charity Classic raised B.253,145, and this money has been
used to complete a new Kindergarten Unit at Mabrachan School, provide equipment at the
Banglamung Home for the Aged, and equip a new Primary Health Care Clinic at the Pattaya
Orphanage. This clinic will provide for the 700 children housed at the Redemptorist
Community Centres and the Fountain of Life.
To date, the Charity Classic has raised over B.600,000 for local
charity projects.
Other events of note are the Residents World Match Play in
September this year and the two-day Ryder Cup match against the American
Embassy Golf Association next February. However, the year starts in July with a return
Ryder Cup match against the Phuket Ex. Pats Golf Society. This time PSC Golf
goes to Phuket. The first major is the Independence Day Tournament at Phoenix
on July 5th.
Communications locally and worldwide continue to improve with excellent
weekly coverage of our activities in Pattaya Mail, and a very comprehensive PSC Web Page
carrying reports of past and current events, current news and fixture schedules, the
annual calendar of major tournaments and PSC Golf organization details.
Locally, the PSC member groups display details of all activities, as do
other outlets such as Delaneys, where we have a good working relationship.
Handicaps have always been a controversial topic and no less so this
year. A lengthy and detailed review was concluded on May 1st after much consultation and
debate, with the introduction of the R&A Approved CONGU (Confederation of National
Golf Unions) System. However, as Pattaya Sports Club is a long standing Member of the
USGA, the USGA System will continue to be available for those members who do not wish to
change.
Full details of the CONGU System, a revised procedure for members
continuing under the USGA System, and the reasons for the change, follow this report. The
PSC Golf Handicap Chairman, Bill Thompson, will continue responsibility for administering
the USGA Handicaps, while Stephen Beard reviews handicaps weekly under the CONGU System.
I am grateful to the members of the PSC Golf Committee for their
efforts and support during the past year. PSC Golf is now a major factor in Eastern
Seaboard golf and we continue to make progress in strengthening our relationship with the
golf courses. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the management of those
courses that are especially supportive when we run major events, and readily co-operate
with us in our weekly competitions.
We are indeed fortunate to have such a wide variety of very fine golf
courses to make up our monthly schedules, and on average we visit regularly 12-14 of the
19 courses available.
The number of PSC member golfers has risen significantly in the past
twelve months and this is reflected in a 25-40% increased participation in the major
tournaments.
My key objective over the past two years has been to provide PSC member
golfers with the best possible program of well organized major tournaments and weekly
competitions within the means and manpower available, and for the affiliated member groups
to retain their individual identity whilst following agreed PSC Golf guidelines and
principles in the course of implementing the PSC Golf program. This has been achieved,
thanks to the small number of volunteers who comprise the PSC Golf Committee and those
within the member groups who work to implement the monthly schedules and major
tournaments.
I hope the Membership will enjoy, and fully participate in, the comprehensive program
planned for 1999/2000.
Little - big man this week
PSC TAGGS... golf from the Hare House
Wednesday,
June 16 - Bangpra International Golf Club (Bogey)
1st: Gary Baxter, 1 up C/B
2nd: Mark Gorda, 1 up
3rd: Eddy Henheffer, 1 up
Gary Baxter became the seventh different Canadian to win a singles
competition out of the Hare House this year when he took the Bogey contest at Bangpra on
Wednesday, June 16. There wasnt much doubt, however, that the Maple Leaf was going
to be flying from the podium. The gentlemen from Canada swept the field in a three way tie
at "one up", with Gary taking first place in a count back.
In second place was Mark Gorda who comes from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
and plays off a twenty handicap. Mark was skating pretty after pars on the first three
holes to go "three up". But he hit some thin ice and finished the front nine
"all square". It was a par on number 18 that gave him his final hole on the plus
side to finish "one up".
In third place, Eddy Henheffer was "three up" with two holes
to go. He then went double-bogey, double-bogey, and off his seventeen handicap he lost
both holes to also finish the day at "one up".
Richard Livingston might want to consider changing his birthday from
July Fourth. Every year, the Hare House holds a tournament to toast Richards
birthday and to celebrate American Independence Day. The entry fee is 1,200 baht and that
includes green fees, caddie fees, an American 4th of July buffet, and a commemorative golf
shirt. Perhaps July First would be more appropriate. That is the national day of Canada.
Friday, June 18 - Rayong Green Valley Country
Club (Stableford)
1st: Jimmy Little, 42 points
2nd: Vic Cross, 39 points
3rd: Ian Warwick, 38 points
There was rejoicing in Jomtien. Gongs were rung, fireworks
exploded, flags waved, and dancing broke out in spontaneity. All that commotion created by
one person coming home from the Hare House after winning the Stableford competition on
Friday, June 18, at Green Valley. Jimmy Little shot an 88 off his 22 handicap and pulled
in 42 Stableford points. He had reason to celebrate, but we wont be seeing him on
the podium again for a while. When you shoot six under your handicap playing with the
person responsible for posting those handicaps... well.
In second place was Vic "The Old Rugged" Cross. Vic had an
amazing 39 points. "Amazing" because that morning he was telling everyone on Soi
Post Office that he had pulled a shoulder muscle and probably wouldnt be able to
swing the club. Punters beware! You dont survive two wars and a career as a
stockbroker without a smidgen of guile.
In third place and playing his first TAGGS competition was
Scotlands Ian Warwick. Ian, who plays off 12, had 38 points. He was being
chauffeured around by Hare House regular Larry Willet. Larry is probably still trying to
explain to the newcomer how 38 points only took the third spot on the podium.
