Pa-Pa-Paul swims to “Funhill” victory

PSC Delaney’ Funhill Cup

Americans Gary Parkinson and Patrick Palmer formed the perfect team. Together, they carded a gross 70, net 63 in the pouring rain at Rayong Green Valley on Friday, April 30th to win the Delaney’s Funhill Cup golf tournament by two strokes.

Pa-Pa-Paul, as they called themselves, took advantage of Gary’s low handicap (7) and Patrick’s high handicap (28) to out-battle a large field of 90 golfers forming 45 teams in the two-man scramble format.

The concept of the tournament was clever. Based on the popular international Dunhill Cup, Kim Fletcher and friends from Delaney’s Irish Pub designed their own version. Two-person teams, supposedly from the same country or region (although obviously the rules in this matter were stretched just a tad), competed for "national pride" and the Delaney’s "Funhill" Cup.

The weather surely cooperated for a tournament sponsored by an Irish pub, for the rains came, heavily at times, and the sun made just a rare appearance during the middle of the tourney. As Delaney’s Managing Director Trevor Allen put it whilst taking shelter in a drink stand during one of the heavier downpours, "It wouldn’t be a Delaney’s tournament without rain." Aye, laddie, a vivid likeness of the Emerald Isle.

Trevor’s comments came just before (or perhaps just after a visit to?) the Jamesons’ charity hole, a par three decorated with a rather large circle near the pin. For a small donation, golfers were treated to a taste of Jamesons Irish Whisky served by a lovely "Thai-rish" lass. A tee shot landing within the circle earned the golfer a full bottle of Jamesons to take home. Although it wasn’t reported how many golfers actually managed to win a bottle, the charity hole did raise 4,900 baht for the Fountain of Life Center in Pattaya.

Guinness, Kilkenny and Carlsberg were also very much involved in the tournament. Guinness and Kilkenny vouchers were part of the prize packages, while Carlsberg was being served free on the course.

The Canines, Canadians Mark Gorda and Glen "Lassie" Dragland, known for their prowess in consuming Carlsberg (sorry Pin-Eye, you just can’t compete), managed to spill a good amount of that Carlsberg on the course, along with a few of their clubs and perhaps the axle of their cart. During last year’s Delaney’s Irish Open, it was reported that Mark Gorda had driven his cart into the lake - an event he vehemently denies. Well, there’s no denying his driving skills this time around, as he performed his magic directly in front of this Pattaya Mail scribe. Whilst chasing down one of Lassie’s errant tee shots, Gorda nonchalantly sent arms, legs, beer and clubs flying in all directions when he drove his cart at a relatively high speed through a large concrete drainage ditch. "And I had to do it right in front of Pattaya Mail!" In an attempt to maintain his composer, Gorda next said something to the effect of, "We’ll use my drive..." and walked off, leaving Lassie to drive the crippled cart and try to find a way around the ditch.

Ah, it wouldn’t be a PSC tournament without some shenanigans (thanks Gorda for providing some), and it wouldn’t be a Delaney’s tournament without a delicious Carvery after the fun. Once again, after everyone had dried off and returned to Pattaya for the prize-giving at Delaney’s, all were treated to the delicious fare, proving again that Delaney’s serves some of the best food on the Eastern Seaboard - no joke.

As in all tournaments this big, it takes special people to organize and run things so that the rest of us can enjoy a fun-filled day. Special thanks go to Delaney’s Managing Director Trevor Allen, Kim Fletcher and friends from Delaney’s for putting on the event, Richard Livingston for his help, all the group leaders from Pattaya Sports Club Golf, Mike Franklin, Chairman of Pattaya Sports Club Golf, Fobe Sportswear on Soi Post Office for producing the shirts, and Pattaya Sports Supply in North Pattaya for producing the trophies. Couldn’t have been done without you.

Singin’ in the rain

The weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball game on Sunday May 2nd saw the Banglamung Blues and the Jomtien Jazz hit all the right notes and put together a lyrical doubleheader. The Jazz put their percussion section together and were able to drum up victories in both games.

The opener saw the Jazz come out in tune and score two in the first with Esso Mike and Mark the Natural collecting the RBI.

The Blues answered back in the bottom of the inning thanks to clutch hitting by Pittsburgh Al and Frank (Nitty) Gritty.

After two the score was tied at four, when the Jazz decided that the hits just keep on coming in the third and put up six runs. Leo (The Lion), Best Ball and Copasetic Curt provided the rhythm.

The beat went on in the top of the fourth as the Jazz added five more thanks to Mike (Mr. Ice) Berg’s three run homer.

The Blues were never in tune and only a two run homer by Alan (Y.B.) Baa in the last inning ended a long scoreless drought. Final score: Jazz 15 - Blues 6.

The nightcap saw the Blues break on top with one in the first and four in the third, thanks to hits by M.J. (Coffee) Jim, Jet (Propulsion) and Thai Nai. But the Blues lost the beat and when the Jazz tallied for eight in the fifth and six in the sixth, the rhapsody was over and the Jazz won again, 15 to 6. Déjà vu all over again.

If you’re looking to make some music of your own, come on out to Pattaya School #7 on Sukhumvit Road just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station. Games are every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Equipment is provided and refreshments are available. All are welcome.
