Untimely transaction?

Dear Sir:
Your correspondent
G. Kinney (Mailbag, February 20) who thought he had been charged 1,176 baht for an ATM withdrawal probably only suffered an alteration in the exchange rate in between his two transactions. Siam Commercial Bank posts their current foreign exchange rates on the Internet at http://www.scb.co.th/bk-index_txtexchange.htm and they sometimes change 5 or 6 times a day. A comparison between the times printed on the ATM slips and the times posted for the modification in exchange rates (their Web site carries a few days of history) should resolve the issue.

Regards,
George Morris

Pleasant stay in Pattaya

Dear Sir,
I visited Pattaya at the beginning of February with a couple of friends for the first time in my life and found it a great place indeed to spend a holiday. With such a variety of bars, discos, good hotels and excellent restaurants it gives you an opportunity to have a great time and a fantastic holiday indeed.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my most sincere thanks to a couple of people and places that made my stay in Pattaya unforgettable, and which will make me to come back there at the earliest occasion I get (which, I hope, will be as early as this April!).

(1) Firstly, I would like to thank the friendly and discreet staff of the Merlin Hotel at which I spent 10 nights, and I extend my very special thanks to the most gifted piano player at La Concha Bar of the Merlin Hotel who told us stories about Thailand, and showed us around Pattaya, not forgetting to introduce us to excellent Thai rice whiskey!

(2) Secondly, my visit wouldn’t have been the same without our regular dinners at the Pink Lady Restaurant at Pattaya Beach Rd which serves the most delicious sea-food I have ever had in my life, and whose staff is the best I have ever encountered on my numerous trips around the world.

(3) Thirdly, I would like to thank a the tailor whose suits accompany me now every day. I just wish I had had a shirt made, too!

(4) Last but not least, I found the love of my life at Pattaya, and this is the most important reason I want to go back there as soon as possible. If it were Valentine’s Day today again, I would write a Valentine’s card but still I want to say: I love you, Puen, with all my heart and soul, and I want to thank for the great time we had together, and I hope we will meet again very, very soon!

Regards,

Noisy beach

Sir:

Is there no end to the ingenuity of those who try so hard to prevent those sitting on Jomtien Beach from being subject to the sound of the waves breaking?

Although the motorcycle riders who rev-up along the back of the beach and the jet skis who rip along the water front do a good job, one area has been uncovered.

But not any more.

Now a daredevil has fitted a microlight to an inflatable boat, and putters up and down the beach front all day just a few feet above our heads to ensure that annoying surf sound has no chance at all.

I salute you all!

Regards
Peter May

Laser dangers

Sir:

Winebibber in the Grapevine column of 23 Jan suggests that the shopkeepers on the pedestrianised Beach Road strip consider new ways of attracting the attention of passers-by.

They have.

They are using laser pointers and shining them into the eyes of passers.

These things can permanently damage the eye and cause blindness.

Perhaps the tourist police will have a quiet word with them and advise them of the danger not only the passers-by but to themselves.

I must admit that I wanted to grab a pointer out of one bar-girls hand and stuff it somewhere where it would cause her pain after I got the treatment.

Regards

Peret
