20th Siam Cup - a great success for Pattaya's surfers
The Siam Cup - Pre-Asian Games, held the end of November off Jomtien Beach, turned out to be a big success for Thai windsurfers in spite of strong showings by the Hong Kong, Chinese and Korean teams. Surfers from France, England, Singapore, Japan and Mexico also competed.
In the mens divisions, out of 7 categories, local Thai surfers won 4 gold medals, four silver and four bronze, with most of the medal winners being based in Pattaya.
The local women windsurfers didnt fare as well, however, with no medals.
The Siam Cup had its status raised a bit this year by the participation of Miss Lee Lai Shan from Hong Kong, the Gold medal winner of the Atlanta Olympic Games 1996. As expected, Lee won the Mistral Ladies competition.
Lee, who often trains in Pattaya, is currently number two in the world ranking list. She was World Champion in 1993, third in 1995 and second in 1996, besides winning numerous Asian Championship titles and Open-European Championships.
Lees coach, Rene Appel of Holland, who has been her trainer for the past eight years, said her victory at the Siam Cup was fantastic and the right motivation for the Asian Games, which will once again be held in Pattaya.

Kelly and Lamb win PGS Pairs C'ship
Brian Kelly and Alan Lamb teamed up to win the Pattaya Golf Society Pairs Championship played at Green Valley on Tuesday, December 2nd. The Dynamic Duo carded 40 Stableford points to win by just one stroke.
Photo: (L to R) Runners-up Les Winch and Peter Johannson; Champions Brian Kelly and Alan Lamb; and third place finishers Roy Mitchell and Big John Williams.
In a truly exciting finish to the 1997 PGS Club Championships, the three best teams battled it out neck and neck all the way to the final green. Played in the best weather the tropics can offer, on a Green Valley course in perfect condition, it was a dream finish with the top three teams separated by just 3 points.
What turned the tide in favor of the champions was probably Alan Lambs play on the par threes. As PGS Chairman Peter Johannson put it, "thats what makes champions... when you need to perform extra under pressure."
Peter Johannson paired with Les Winch to finish second, just one point back with 39 Stableford points. Roy "Tiger" Mitchell and Big John Williams, both of whom have not been strangers to the top of the leader board, teamed up to finish third with 37 points.
In the technical prizes, Alan Lamb edged out Big John Williams by one foot to win closest to the center line on #14. Les Winch once again won the long drive competition. Both winners were presented with PGS golf shirts.

Cheers both lengthens and shortens lead
In which battle of 1746 were a thousand highlanders killed? Was the tuning fork invented in 1514 or 1714 or 1914?
Cheers Bar, one of the leading hotbeds of intellectual trivia and Platonic thinking in south Pattaya, have lengthened their lead in the Wednesday quiz league whilst losing top dog position to the Rising Sun in the Sunday competition. On Wednesday December 3, Cheers chased off a high spending but well oiled Sixties challenge, whilst rivals the Rising Sun went down to a determined and gritty Billy and Da team.
But on Sunday November 30, Rising Sun scored an exceptional 88% against Cheers 82% and have now gotten a narrow lead of four points in the aggregate score. Bobs Bar are currently standing third in the Sunday stakes.
The answers to the questions above are Culloden and 1714. Wednesday quiz players are asked to note there will be no quiz on December 17 to avoid a clash with the Pattaya Sports Club party. The December 17 competition will be played earlier on Monday December 15.
The latest tally is:

Londoner and Kronborg share lead
Londoner and Cafe Kronborg have each only lost one match this season and share the lead through nine weeks in the Pattaya Sports Club Darts League. Londoner technically holds the edge by virtue of having won one more beer leg.
Perennial champions Jacks Bar is lurking just one win back in third place after having lost only two games this season.
To date, Don from Cafe Kronborg holds the league lead for highest check-out at 160. It may prove hard to beat.
So far this season, six PSC darts players have achieved perfect 180s. Gen and Dirk from Beer Put, Michel from Texxan Inn, Martin from Micks Place, Ron from Rising Sun and Tim from Pleasure Dome have all reached perfection.
Standings, Week 9:

Siam Airsports first civilian course a success
All heads turned skywards on Saturday the 29th of November at Jomtien Beach when Siam Airsports dropped their first ever civilian parachute course in Thailand, from an aircraft at 3,000 feet. Delighted first time jumpers splashed down gently into the sea where they were promptly picked up by speed boats and taken back to shore.
"I just cant believe how amazing that was," declared one. "It was awesome!" Everyone was in extremely high spirits and several now want to take it one step further and complete an accelerated freefall course to enable them to become accomplished skydivers.
There was just as much amazement from bystanders on top of Pattaya Park Tower earlier the same day when Mike Skeet flew past with his parachute and tandem passenger before landing in open ground nearby.
Siam Airsports would like to give special thanks to Khun Tumunsac of the Sea Falcon Restaurant and his boys with their safety boats, also to Thai Flying, in particular Captain Tanapat Bunyarak for his hard work in administration and his pilots for their excellent flying.
If anyone is interested in going skydiving, Siam Airsports are now taking bookings for the next course.

The baseball adage that states, "Good defense beats good offense" proved to be fallible as Nicks Rangers and Alans Cowboys clashed in the weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball game on Sunday, November 30.
Despite some sparkling defensive plays by the Rangers Mike (Son of Stick) Ladin at third and C.F. (Fowl Ball) Macallen in center, the Cowboys gorged at the trough of hard hitting and won both ends of the doubleheader.
The Cowboys broke out on top, scoring eight runs in the first inning. The Rangers struck back in the second and when Nick (The Stick) Siemens smashed a two run homer to right, the Rangers were down by only one.
But in the fifth, the Cowboys exploded for nine runs. Mike (Mr. Ice) Berg had a three run homer, M.J. (Coffee) Jim had a bases loaded triple, and Alan (Y.B.) Baa and Montreal (Uppa U.S.) Robert contributed their own four baggers.
Despite a three run homer by Dick (The Trick) Cagg in their last at bat, the Rangers fell way short at twenty-one to eleven.
The second game saw the Rangers jump out to an early three run lead, with Sterling (Silver) Bechtel and Billy Blooper getting run scoring hits in the rally.
However, the Cowboys slowly chipped away at the Rangers lead and when Y.B. and Mr. Ice hit back to back homers in the fifth, the Cowboys were never headed.
The Rangers managed a great comeback and with the tying run on third and the winning run at first, Terry (Five) Strikes of the Rangers smashed a hard liner to right that Alan (Leaving) Vegas deftly snared to insure the Cowboys victory, fifteen to fourteen. On this day, the hits beat the myth.

Serve, 15Love, 30 All, Deuce, Your Add, Game, Set, Matchif you recognize these terms then you may be interested in playing tennis with the Pattaya Sports Club (PSC).
The PSC is supporting the formation of PSC Tennis, to complement their other many sports (Golf, Softball, Darts, Fishing, Bowling, etc.).
PSC Tennis is developing a list of PSC members and Pattaya-area tennis players that are willing to play tennis with other interested players.
The PSC believes there are many tennis players of all skill levels in Pattaya and this section would help players meet other tennis players and provide an opportunity to get out and play tennis with many other people.
If enough interest is demonstrated a Tennis Ladder may be developed for those individuals interested in some type of formal competition.
However, at this time PSC Tennis is just interested in providing a means of getting tennis players interacting with each other.
Those interested in more information can contact Craig Lewis, tel. 702-100
or e-mail [email protected]. Please provide name, gender, level of play between 1 and 5 (Level 1 is for beginners and Level 5 is for tennis pros/those who played in formal competition), times/days available, if you are member of a health/fitness center that has courts available, and phone number and/or e-mail address. This information would be provided to other interested individuals. Remember all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Lets hear from you tennis players!

Levin, Franklin, Berra and Waack just edge in front at Bangpra and Khao Kheow
Pattaya Sports Club Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
In almost perfect weather, the weeks two popular venues produced some good scores, a turnout of around 50 players and very enjoyable golf.
