Green Jacket up for grabs

For the fourth straight year, the coveted green jacket will be up for grabs as the 1997 TQ Masters returns to Phoenix Country Club, specifically the Lakes and Ocean courses, on Friday, October 24th.

Although only in its fourth year, the TQ Masters has become the "granddaddy" of all the local bar-related majors, being the first of its kind. First played in 1994, the TQ Masters has paved the way for many more golf tournaments in the purely fun category.

Eddie Henheffer was the first to don the coveted green jacket with his victory in 1994. He was followed by Serge Straeten in 1995 and Leroy Blasi in 1996.

The TQ Masters Tournament has become one of the most anticipated tournaments in the area, and organizers are once again billing it as a "not-so-prestigious tournament" that is both challenging for serious golfers and fun for duffers.

The format will be Individual Stableford, with players mostly forming their own foursomes. The 1200 baht entry fee will include technical prizes, runners up trophies, winner’s trophy and green jacket, "special" special prizes for the other of end of the performance spectrum, a buffet at the clubhouse, award ceremony at the TQ, and a commemorate golf shirt.

Sign up with Woody at the TQ, Wayne at the Hare House, or Richard at the Pattaya Driving Range.

1997 THA Sports competition

The curtain fell on the 1997 THA Sports competition on October 5th. The ‘hostel’ competition began on September 24th.

Over 200 employees from 20 hotels on the Eastern Seaboard joined in the games.

Mr. Felix Tantiprasut, General Manager of the Town-In-Town hotel, organised this year’s games, with Mr. Charoon Boonsompong, General Manager of the Montien, Pattaya as head coach and referee.

The games were rather subdued this year due to the state of the economy. The hotels had to economise on their spending. The after games banquet was held at a temple. Last year, the banquet was a festive occasion at one of Pattaya’s finest entertainment venues.

The games still garnered 10,000 baht, which will be donated to schools in the area.

Cowboy rout Rangers

Despite dark clouds and a few rain drops, the Pattaya Sports Club softball game was well attended on Sunday, October 12th. Alan’s Cowboys took both ends of the doubleheader from Jerry’s Rangers.

The first game was a lopsided affair that saw the Cowboy’s infield turn three double plays which helped to nullify three long homers by the Rangers’ Kiwi Rick, Nick Siemens and Jerry Cal-Tex, all solo shots.

Strong defense by the Rangers Aloha Tom and second base Mike was not enough to stop the Cowboys onslaught. Mercifully for the Rangers, the game finally ended with the Rangers on the wrong side of a 23 to 5 bashing.

The Cowboys carried their momentum into the second game and behind the hard hitting of Sterling Bechtel and M.J. Jim, grabbed an early lead.

The Rangers fought back but sparkling plays by Jimmy Lockhead in left field and Craig in right snuffed out a potential rally and the Rangers fell again by a score of 12 to 3.

Mike Berg earned MVP accolades for the Cowboys after his outstanding performance, hitting for the cycle and knocking in eight RBI.

Games are every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Pattaya School #7 just past Greenway driving range and Caltex gas station on Sukhumvit Highway. There are hot dogs, beer and soda. All the equipment is provided and teams are chosen just prior to the start of the game. So, bring family and friends and join the fun. All are welcome.

John Hopkins tames soggy Eastern Star

On a day that saw high scores due to a soggy Eastern Star course from torrential rains the previous night, John Hopkins came closest to taming the conditions in the Pattaya Golf Society stroke play competition on Tuesday, October 7.

John went round the course in 5 over par net 77 to win the weekly title. At one point, both John and second place finisher Les Winch, who finished with a net 6 over par 78, were ten strokes ahead of the field at the turn.

Peter Johannson led the rest of the field who had trouble with the "swimming pool" bunkers and rain soaked fairways and greens. Peter finished third with a net 10 over par 82, defeating Colin Morgan on count back in fourth.

George Meigh rounded out the top five finishers with a net 12 over par 84.

Although many PGS golfers got "close to the green", only Colin Morgan was able to earn a closest to the pin award, that coming on the 166 yard #6.

Charity bowling raises money for local schools

The Rotary Club and the HAM Radio Operators Club of Pattaya sponsored the Charity Bowling Tournament of 1997, with all proceeds donated to help further the education of needy students in the schools of Banglamung and Pattaya.

The winner received the ‘Governor of Chonburi Cup’, which was presented by the governor himself. Held on October 5th, 1997, many bowlers were pinning their hopes on winning the coveted cup, so striking while the iron was hot, crowds were at the OD Bowling alley in Pattaya. There was not a seat to spare.

The 3 member teams were mixed (men and women on the same team) and the winners were chosen by the highest average score of three games.

There were four prize categories for mixed teams: Grand Prize, Second Grand Prize, and a Booby Prize, two prizes for the men only and women only teams, there were also prizes for the highest score for solo male and female bowlers.

Beard repeats, Gibson and Walsh rally

PSC TAGGS Golf from the Hare House

Stephen "Foster" Beard won for the 3rd time in 4 Tuesday starts, while John "Oy" Gibson teamed with the suddenly resurgent Dave Walsh to win the Wednesday 4 ball better ball tournament in The Alternative Golf Gentlemen’s Society (TAGGS) competition on October 7th and 8th.

On a water-logged Eastern Star golf course that saw another record turnout for a TAGGS Tuesday Stableford, Stephen "Foster" Beard "swam" around the course in 32 points, good enough for his 3rd win in 4 Tuesday outings.

As contender Malcolm Claire put it best, "you could have scuba dived in the bunkers". Apparently it only cost Malcolm 20 baht for his caddie to wade thigh deep in one of the bunkers to retrieve a wayward shot.

Mighty Moe Deverdenne finished second on Tuesday, overpowering the front nine in 60 shots, but recovering well on the back nine with 42 to card 30 Stableford points.

Mike "Dabber" Dubanovich placed third with 28 Stableford points.

John "Oy" Gibson did his best Davis Love III impersonation when he teamed with Dave "I’m now going to retire at the top of my game" Walsh in the 4 ball better ball tournament at Pattaya Country Club on Wednesday, October 8.

John went from a devastating loss the previous week to shooting 22 shots better in winning the tournament with Dave, much like Davis Love after his crushing experience at the Ryder Cup, only to come back and win his very next tournament.

Dave, after "never winning anything in his life", has now won two TAGGS titles in the past few weeks.

John and Dave combined for a net 14 under par 58 in a round that saw the team record 2 net 1s and 2 net 2s, for 3 net eagles, 3 net birdies and 4 net pars.

John carded a solid scratch 94 off his 24 handicap, while Dave bettered the team score by 12 shots, including 4 natural pars for the 36 handicapper.

Lewis Underwood and Mike "Dabber" Dubanovich finished second with a net 12 under par 60. Woody earned player of the day honors with his scratch 93 off his 28 handicap, with the team just missing taking the title when they took a 6 on the final hole.

Kevin Bukowski and Mike Spear took the final podium position, finishing third with an 8 under par net 64.

O'Meara and McCarty take the honours at Natural Park and Green Valley

PSC Golf from the Green Bottle

Natural Park Resort - Monday 6 October

After heavy overnight rain, Steve ‘The Starter’ Ross declared that preferred lies would be in operation. Mick O’Meara, after a short visit to the UK, tied the aforementioned Steve with 32 Stableford points but won the day on count-back.

Stan the ever ready Fry was third with just 30 points.

Green Valley - Friday 10 October

On a hopefully late monsoon season day, Niall McCarty, after a 5 week trip to the United States, coped with the hot and humid conditions and played what was surely his last game as a 34 handicapper. Almost lapping the field with 43 Stableford points and carding 24 points on the front nine alone. Some of his shots suggested the decimal point was in the wrong place and he will perhaps be overtaking some more experienced colleagues in the handicap stakes. Following some way behind was the improving (after a few tips) resident Brian Imrie with 34 points, hotly pursued by Mick O’Meara with 33 points

Two near-pin prizes on #7 & #16 were claimed by John Moore and Alan Robinson.

Thursday 2 October, Great Lake (Stableford)

Great Lake, in the usual excellent condition, gave no problem to John Moore taking 1st Place with 38 Stableford points.

A four-way count-back then resulted in the ever-present Svein Vistung and Jim Montgomery coming 2nd and 3rd respectively with 37 points. Vida Cole took 4th place beating Bernie Tuppin, who has an unfortunate habit of being beaten on count-back, both with 37 points also.

Two near-pin prizes were claimed by Kevin Taylor and Jim Montgomery.

Ishanga, Ebrahim, Vistung and Dubanovich complete an international line-up of winners

PSC Golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Monday 6 October, Bangpra (Stableford)

Thursday 9 October, Phoenix (Stroke)

Phoenix continues to be well presented and well managed, and this Thursday was no exception. On a hot day with little wind, but avoiding the afternoon rain, the results were good.

Near-Pin prizes went to Meg McPhie, Svein Vistung, and Jim Montgomery who claimed twice!
