Floods hit parts of Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, 24 July 2013 Heavy overnight rains in Chiang Mai have flooded parts of the municipal areas, paralyzing traffic.

The municipal seat is submerged under 50 centimeters of water and is impassable for small vehicles. Local authorities have been pumping floodwater out of affected areas to divert the water flow.

Chiang Mai mayor said the flooding is an annual occurrence during the rainy season as the city is situated in a low-lying area and the sewage pipes have been clogged due to years of use.

Residents have been advised to move their belongings to higher ground as more heavy rains are predicted during the next few days.

Floods were also reported in the southern province of Ranong, the eastern provinces of Chanthaburi and Trat, and the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday after days of heavy rain.
