Who needs woods?

The Backyard Golf Society

Several centuries ago the various tribes on Easter Island (or Rapa Nui) competed to build the largest stone heads (or moai) and transport them using timber rollers to lookout points around the island.  As a result of this activity the island was quickly stripped of its forests and no more wood meant no more civilization.

On Friday, Nov. 6, at the Backyard Golf Society outing, Mickey the Yak, turned the Rapa Nui experience on its head and played the whole round without using woods.  But whereas the people on Easter Island were more or less wiped out, Mickey returned the best score of the day to take the top prize.  Who needs woods (certainly not Elin Nordgren!) indeed?

The day’s near-pin was won by another returnee and skilful exponent of the 18-hole game, Second-hand Bob.  That was an even bigger turn-up than The Yak’s stableford win, as Bob is bigger than Mickey, just.

With a larger number of players out the skins are always harder to come by and this was borne out by the fact that the last 8 holes were drawn and rolled over to the following week.  The joint top winners on the day were: The Yak and Diet Whiskey Morgan with 3 each, Khun Wattie with 2 and there were singles to Beaker Larsen and Irish John.

One of the highlights of the day was an obligatory stray dog who took it open himself to start howling at the (non-existent) moon on several occasions and caused some players to think the warning horn for electrical atmospheric activity had gone off.
