Sunday, August 14, Green Valley – Medal

Another month gone round quickly and time again for our monthly medal here at Green Valley.  It was this month last year when Alec Hoare, standing on the first tee suggested that we ran a medal competition as the group in front of were running theirs and as they might be a bit slower than usual and it would also help to slow us down a bit.  It has turned out to be a very good idea and has become a very popular competition with all our members trying to get their hands on one of them.  As it turned out, apart from one occasion a different member has won each month, which shows that everyone has a chance of getting one of them eventually.

Today’s winner was Rod Torrie who played very good golf and who also had a red hot putter and he won it by three clear shots with a net sixty eight, which also included a ‘2’.  Declan Kelly kept up his good form of late and he came second with a net seventy one while Allan Parker was his usual steady self and played to his handicap to take the third with a net seventy two.  Allan also had a birdi ‘2’.  Russell Gilroy and Donal McGuigan both had a net seventy three but Russell got the fourth and last place and kept Donal out of the prizes with a better back nine.

1st Rod Torrie (12) net 68

2nd Declan Kelly (13) net 71

3rd Allan Parker (9) net 72

4th Russell Gilroy (17) net 73

2’s:  Rod Torrie and Allan Parker.

Tuesday, August 16, Crystal Bay – Stableford

We decided to give Crystal Bay a try today as we hadn’t been here in a long time and most of our group were very happy with it, finding both the greens and fairways to be in very good condition.  Off the fairways maybe it wasn’t as good but for those who stayed on them there were no complaints.

As the course was virtually deserted and we had it to ourselves we again got around in less than three and a half hours, so had a very enjoyable day.

Joe McArdle.

Today John Fenwick almost had a hole in one twice on the same hole.  First his tee shot lipped out of the hole and ran up the hill, then it rolled back down again and just missed the cup for the second time, leaving him with a tap in birdie.

Once again we were joined by our friends from the PFGS and one of their members, Ian Chambers, who was playing his last game for this trip, had what was one of his best games ever and was a very clear winner with forty one points, which off the white tees was a great score on this course.  In second place and five points behind was Joe McArdle with thirty six points and Joe also had a ‘2’.  Frank McGowan took third place with thirty three points.

1st Ian Chambers (25) 41pts

2nd Joe McArdle (13) 36pts

3rd Frank McGowan (18) 33pts

2’s: Joe McArdle and John Fenwick.

Thursday, August 18, Burapha – Stableford

As we had some low handicappers with us today we decided to give them a bit of a challenge so we had two flights, one off the blue tees and one off the whites, something we hadn’t done in a long time.  Again we played the A and B nines on what was a perfect day for golf and as the course was quiet we got around quickly.

Mark Lang showed that playing off the blue tees was no problem for him as he played to his five handicap and was the winner with thirty six points.  John Batty also played well and came second with thirty four.

Off the whites, Joe McArdle had what was the best score of the day and was the winner with thirty seven points (this was Joe’s first win since he returned from his holiday in Ireland).  We then had two players on thirty six points with Frank McGowan taking the second place on the count back and Craig Hitchens having to settle for the third spot.

We had no ‘2’s today in either flight.

Blue Flight

1st Mark Lang (5) 36pts

2nd Jon Batty (8) 34pts

White Flight

1st Joe McArdle (13) 37pts

2nd Frank McGowan (18) 36pts

3rd Craig Hitchens (14) 36pts
